Many developers, both indie and tripleA have complained about Valve's "shitty practices" as well, though you don't ever hear Steam fanboys bringing those up. The biggest being the 30% tax they refuse to lower even as bandwidth and hosting costs dropped 10 fold in the past two decades. The whole reason that other publishers splintered off into their own launchers, was because Valve refused to lower this cut. The entire fault the PC space splintered off into a mess of platforms and launchers lies at Valve's feet. How's that for 'shitty practices'? Something like 15% would be more reasonable and also sustainable seeing the billions in profit they rake each year.
When Valve finally decided to say ok here's 20%, it only applies to tripleAs that sell 10million+ copies, shitting on indies even more. Even Valve's ex employees were shitting on them for refusing to lower their cut, it's somewhere earlier in this thread.
Right now as we speak there are multiple lawsuits from game developers against Valve, for everything from antitrust practices to market manipulation. (for eg Valve can and will penalize your company if you don't agree to sell your games at prices they deem acceptable on other platforms) Imagine Valve telling you what $ you can or cannot sell your game at on storefronts they have nothing to do with, and if you refuse they fark you over completely on their platform. That's bullshit practices.
Epic Games has given freely millions of dollars of assets to indie developers, completely royalty and license free - with massive amounts of support in the form of code samples, models, assets, textures, animations, materials, free courses/tutorials, not to mention Unreal Engine 4 and 5 both 100% completely free to use. All things Valve promised for Source 2 that never materialized.
Sure Epic isn't flawless and no doubt they do a lot of nonsense as well, but Valve's monopoly is BAD for everyone. Every other industry throughout human history has suffered when one company gets an effective monopoly in the market. What's going to happen when Gaben kicks the bucket and some truly evil company like Apple buys full ownership? When you see the true evil companies like Apple don't hesitate to dole out, then you'll really regret every single cent you spent on their platform.
