Tribes: Vengeance

I have a serious soft spot for this game. Loaded up my retail discs and it actually works.

Here it is in 1440p glory. I got AA to work, but then it stopped.

I miss Tribes. Tribes Ascend was alright.

Try forcing MAA? I tend to find that when a game doesn't want to cooperate that it can made for a decent sub.

Links there are broken. But you can still snag a copy at ModDB here. Also if you got the hardware/software you can get 7.1 outta the game using Creatives ALchemy. And 21:9 worked just fine once I added my native resolution to "TribesGUIState.ini".

Also MAA forced from the Radeon Drivers works. But I couldn't force any other AA mode and have it work.

Lol it also supports "UseNPatches", which is Tru-Form in the TV_CD_DVD.ini. Which would have been great as you potentially bump the poly count through tessellation. But I doubt the game models where built for it and it doesn't appear to work at all because the drivers no longer support it.

I would have used that ModDB link if I'd known about it. At least my optical drive gets some use with me being ignorant.

I did try downloading from tribesuniverse.com and it did work for me, but the WaybackMachine isn't the best spot for downloading anything. Took about 90 seconds for the download to start and downloaded at a trickle @ 50 - 300 Kbps.

Morphological AA does seem to work. Surprising how much cleaner the edges look even at this resolution when AA is used. It seems like just yesterday I was struggling to run this at medium settings, 1024 x 768 on my 9700 Pro, 768 MB RAM, Athlon 1900+ system. Never did I imagine I'd bee playing it at 1440p, pegged 144 FPS, 8xAA, etc. GPU does show about 60% utilization though.

As I've been very vocal about in other areas of this forum, I RMA'd my Vega 64, and am now using my old, partially melted, Gigabyte Radeon HD 7970 (Windforce OC), which is the card I used until December, 2018.

Above I posted the Vega 64 ran this game at 8xAA, 1440p, 144 FPS at 60% utilization.

I am here to report that the 7970 (coupled with a Ryzen 2700+) does even better.

The card is not capable of doing 144 Hz at 1440p, but at 60 Hz, it runs at about 20% utilization with all of the previous settings. It even drops to its base clock from 1000 Mhz to 300 Mhz on occasion and still maintains 60 FPS.

Another note: I noticed AA was working with Morphilogical AA, but it wasn't showing up in my screenshots. Was enabling MAA a placebo for me? Then I remembered the design behind this AA method prevented it from showing up in screenshots. Or maybe I'm crazy. Regardless, AA is not visible on the below images.

I also bought tribes vengeance. It never lived up to tribes 2 but was still decent. It died pretty fast.

I have to disagree. This game is 16 years old. I think they did a great job catering to engine limitations with graphic design (low poly structures/characters because armor, etc.). The terrain has sharp textures - everything is intentionally colorful and borders cartoonish.

The only thing I would like improved is the draw distance. When flying around in the knucklecraft (or whatever it is) most of the world is lost in grey silhouette. Gameplay could be improved by more precise mouse movement; there's a minimum degree of (something like) 0.01 which makes it tough to get precise when sniping.

I really loved/love the jetpack/ski dynamic though.

I miss Tribes game-play. Tribes Ascend is still played. But there is usually only a server or two with a enough people to play and often it's a 24/7 one map server

Done with Tribes: Vengeance, I went to put its CD back in my case (which until last month, I had not opened in 10 years, probably).

Along the way, I found my disc for F.E.A.R. I never got a proper experience with that game. Low framerates, low resolution.

Took some work to get it working... WinXP SP 2 Compatibility mode, disable full screen optimisations. Otherwise you get a black screen at startup.
