Just completed the game in about 130 hours on broken bones difficulty, did every quest I came across except the gwent ones, though I left quite a few question marks on the later maps. Congratulations to CDProjectRed to raising the bar yet again and making a masterpiece worthy of "best of all time" discussions/arguments.
Only thing I really didn't like was the 12 ability limit on the skill tree, once I passed about L27 or so I stopped using ability points since I didn't need/want to replace any of the skills I already had. Went with a fast attack/light armor build with some quen thrown in the mix and thoroughly enjoyed the game from start to end.
On a technical level the game has much to be praised, though the dynamic loading/streaming in the background is probably the most amazing tech about the game. Usually games of this high fidelity have to make sacrifices (ie loading screens, lower production quality, no building interiors etc) if they want a vast expansive world, but this game/engine manages to pull it off brilliantly.
What stats should I focus on at the start? I'm on the third difficulty.
depends. theres 3 viable build options imo. A sign build, adrenaline build, and a crit build. plus don't neglect alchemy. There is enough skill points to go all out on one of those builds with a secondary in alchemy. 3rd diff is blood and broken bones?
Adrenaline and crit are the same build. You can however definitely do an alchemy only build too, it's simply much harder to start
trying to max out fast, strong, plus adren skills is tough. Sure there might be enough skill points but not enough mutagen slots. And a good adrenaline build needs at least a couple general skills on top of the cat/grffin/ursine techniques skill. Plus a couple sockets for alchemy. Only leaves 6 skill slots left open for combat skills.
Alchemy only build is quite viable, takes a while to come into its own tho. That's why I prefer it as a secondary option. THe skill that increases toxicity level is vital, the skill that heals every time u chug a potion, and the skill that increases mutagen bonuses. With just those 3 I have a toxicity limit of well over 250, decoctions last an hr, most potions last around ~4min. Sign intensity around +300 percent with my sword drawn.
theres really no wrong build imo. I found the game got real easy around ~lvl15. Plus potions of clearance of plentiful if you don't like your build.

If you max out fast and adrenaline you dont need strong at all.
Never put off tomorrow what you can put off today!

You would run out of mutagen slots if u tried to max all 3 lol.
Even fast and adren require lots of slots. The adren tree needs all 4 skills slotted imo. Fast needs 3 for sure(crippling strike is questionable) plus 1 slot for whichever witcher technique u choose(would go cat with a fast build) Theres 3 general skills that affect adrenaline that should be considered.(2 I think are necessary) Leaves 1 slot for alchemy..

Yeah I noticed this early on but it makes sense so players are forced to focus their character build, and not make a "do all" type build. Still it does look like 12 abilities seems a tad limited.
Level 9 and I have been going with a fast attack/light armor build as well, trying to get away from using Quen as it makes the game easier than it already is. But I want to choose another sign to focus my build on.
So I'm new to this game, got to Velen, and looked at the zoomed out map -- it is overwhelming.
How do you guys play this game? What do you do first -- some quests are saying 'suggested level 33' and some are only a few levels higher, and there are a ridiculous amount of ?'s on the map.
Not sure whether to explore the entire island first or hit the story mission.
Can you come back to these places and check everything out later? Will it be too easy when you're overlevelled from another area?

if you do a low level quest when your over leveled the xp awards become pitiful. Doing to high a level a quest imposes a strange damage modifier that nearly makes it impossible to do the quest without cheese tactics.
Yes, you can return to previously completed areas to clean up side stuff.
I am just focusing on main quest stuff for the most part, and banging out secondary quests, contracts, etc along the way that are close to my level. I think I read the rewards you get for each quest scale depending on your level, so it makes more sense to just do the stuff that is at or near your current level. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong on that though.

1 for the cat armour skill, one for axi dialogue because it makes no sense for geralt to not b able to do that. All the rest red. Killed things in 2-3 hits at the end of the game.
You dont need signs give adrenalin because you wont be using them often, you dont need signs can be cast with adrenalin because you only want to cast signs at max adrenalin anyway. The health/stamina regen one is useful at the start of the game though.
Thats full fast, full adrenalin, deflect arrows and fleet footed. Makes you a monster!

Good points. I run a primarily sign build and it starts to steam roll enemies around lvl ~15. 1 or 2 igni's and mobs of enemies are dead. I get bored with that I mass knock down enemies with aard and 1 hit kill as I go. Secondary yrden is a boss killer. If I need another change I can just throw down regular yrdens, use quen and melee anything. Axii I only pumped the 1st tier skill for dialogues. With this build plus the ekhidna? decoction, every sign I cast heals me.

Yeah, that decoctioin needs a nerf, its way over powered compared to every other healing potion.

Witcher 2 style casting. Switching signs mid-fight is too hard? Radial menu reminds you that you are playing a ploughing console port? Well now you can cast with one button press,

at some point about 5 quests snuck past me and I was too overleveled to get meaningful XP out of them I still did them just for the fun of it, but didn't really help me strength-wise.
I'll probably find more side quests like this...
Now Playing: Joe Dever's: Lone Wolf (NS) Final Fantasy World (PS4P)
For those of you out leveling quests. It's the witcher contracts, they give quite a large amount of exp even when you are higher level than them. I know it sounds dumb, but leave them till later in the game and just do normal side quests and main quests until you have at least reached kaer morhen.
