But Witcher 2 was very unusual in that you had two massively different routes through the game.

True that, only game i can think of off the top of my head that did that was ff x-2, and it was not an entire third of the game either.

I'm thinking of picking the witcher 3 wild hunt GOTY. Worth it?

Do I need to go through 1 and 2 before hand?

Not really, but if you have the time why not. They are good games. Witcher 1 is best played from isometric view, like it was intended. Especially during combat, which is a mess with 3rd person in my opinion.

Witcher 2 is worth playing. Very good game. As for the first one I gave up on it after experiencing the combat in the first hour.

You are missing out. Witcher 1 is easily the best Witcher game in the series.

Well at least you are honest with yourself. Personally I am glad I am not a graphics whore, I would have missed out on so many great games if I was.

Naw, I gave the first game an honest try and couldn't get into it. Mainly due to how horrible the combat felt.

Which one of the two are you referring to?

I have 1 and I uninstalled it once I saw the graphics. I reinstalled it and might just smash through the main quests and be done with it. Sigh.... 30 hours long apparently.

You don't need to play 1 or 2 to enjoy 3, it's not necessary at all. I really enjoyed the first one (esp loved how some of the quests intertwined), but this was way back when it came out, I wouldn't recommend it to just anyone in this day and age because the bar has raised for the amount of jankiness most gamers will put up with.

I knew about the witcher series before picking up witcher3 but had only ever played a short demo of either the 1st or 2nd one. Having not played the first two I still really enjoyed playing witcher 3 and was not lost in the latest story line. Sure you realize that certain characters have a history, which you could google I guess along the way, but that didn't ruin the game for me. Sure having played the first two may have made it more enjoyable but I found it to be a great game on its own anyway.

I just couldn't get into Witcher 1 Geralt looks like a midevil hippy sexual predator and the combat was too much for me to understand. I like the dumbed down version in Witcher 2 and 3 a lot better. Especially Witcher 3 where you can just dodge roll out of the way like a boss.

I decided to go through 1 and 2. Hopefully by the time I'm done the witcher 3 would have dropped by at least $3.

Give W1 a chance. The opening of the game is not as strong as the rest of the game. With that and the initially confusing game mechanics many people bailed early. But, if you have patience, by the time you are midway into the 2nd act there will be no turning back.

Play 1 with isometric view, trust me. Combat is better, feels like an old school RPG, looks better. Over the sholder was ok for some picturesque views and thats about it.

In both Witcher 1 and 2 make sure you give it due hours to learn the combat. This could range between 3 and 5 depending on how good you are.

Currently 70 hours into the game, and went to the island areas. Im playing the game on medium details with limited bells and whistles, and i am still amazed at how gorgeous it is.

And its not the technical aspects, but in terms of how the world is built, the geography, composition and design of the places. How the terrain is utilized, the way things are layered around the world. The way the weather is presented, how light is used, its just top notch work.

Literally I can point the camera at any direction and im always met with an amazing view. Not a single time has the game failed to impress me, in terms of visuals. And the game has a terrific sense of place, instead of just some fantasy world.

The islands remind me a bit of Skyrim, but by comparison Skyrim is like a kid's drawing next to Witcher 3's Rembrand.

The combat controls were a real struggle for me in the beginning, I thought they were just plain bad so I took a break from the game. But after the patch that fixed Geralt's movement and I gave it another shot it started to click with me and I was hooked until the end. Ended up putting easily over 100 hours into it.

I still don't think the combat controls are perfect, but they feel much more adequate now after that patch and getting used to it than they did at first.

Its also really massive, since there are tons of quests and stuff to do still. The amount of effort put into making this game must have been enormous, so well done to CDPR.
