rented items that expire? sounds like a korean mmo
It is credits you earn in game, not real money. In the final version of the game, you will be able to buy items, though there will still be a wear mechanic.
Sounds like something you would find in a f2p title.
First of all, a lot of titles (including ones you pay to play) have items that can be rented with credits you earn in game.
However, in this case, the reasoning is that they don't want people to get the impression that any of the Arena Commander items are permanent. With the rental system, no one is going to be grinding for hours on end through out the alpha, and get pissed off when all their junk vanishes when the game is launched. REC is supposed to just be a way to reward players that help out by playing the alpha, with the chance to try new items without spending real cash.
BTW, they aren't all that stingy with the credits either and I have never seen another game that was as generous with the way rental time works as CiG did for arena commander.

I guess they can be super generous when they are selling ships for $1000.
What a bunch of suckers.

I would seriously like to see a list of games that are not f2p titles where you can rent items for ingame credits or buy them permanently for real money.
AFAIK it is not that common, and if it is, it truly is a shame since that is a rotten f2p concept.
Never seen it myself, so for me that puts it into the F2P-category, except I still have to pay for the game. Saddens me seing this as I used to get late at school just because I was doing a WC1or 2 mission in the morning , glad it's just one of many great games coming

i must the only one who has zero interest in this "game". 12k bucks...roflmao...are people really that ...stupid...?
You haven't read through this entire thread / the official SC forums have you? Yes, people are that stupid. Even worse, they can't understand how you can not be throwing your life savings at this game.
Selling ships for cash, rentals, insurance, fuel, etc., it's like second life in space. Pretty soon you'll get in game warning messages for not filling out your TPS reports on time

k .
personally i don't care how people spend their money. i'm just amazed at how many people are giving money to this guy. but being a student of twitch.tv, i see people throwing money at streamers on a daily basis. people earn six-figures simply from people donating to them just to watch someone else play a game.
That's true. People are free to do whatever they want with their money. I'm planning a server rack and 24-bay NAS @ SAN for home / development use, because I've always wanted to. To some it's a complete waste og money. To me it's a hobby

you know the saying "Opinions are like @ssholes, everyone has at least one", so, yeah. You can spend your money for whatever you want, that doesn't change the opinion of others. On a sidenote: Yes, i've followed the thread from the beginning. However it does not change my view on it.

Nope. I just want to be able to talk about the game without having people that don't care about the game dropping in to thread bomb about the financial model.
Everyone knows what the deal is with the financial model. Derailing any other conversation about the game to sh&%can people chosing to drop ridiculous amounts of money for digital goods is annoying.
The hilarious part is the negative response some of you have to them making it relatively easy for people to earn credits to get access to all the available contents by just playing the game.
This kind of btchn is why we can't have anything nice

LOL, I bet I feel the same way about you wasting your time on this thread that you feel about people dropping $15000 for an unreleased game.
WHY RSI AND ALL SUBSIDIARIES, NEED TO BE INVESTIGATED – RIGHT NOW!
By Derek Smart:
"From everything that we have uncovered thus far, it is our belief that the game, Star Citizen, as of this writing, has all the makings of a crowd-funding failure, and an unmitigated disaster. A disaster which, if, and when it happens, and everything eventually comes out, is likely to be the most shocking event in recent gaming memory, which threatens to eclipse even the 38 Studios collapse of 2012."
In other words Derek Smart is jealous that a game not even released is already far more successful than any of his horribly crappy games from 3000AD?
It wasn't like he was already a big joke in the gaming industry, that he is practically the Eww Boll of the games industry, he decides to give us even more laughter.

Yes, he's a character, no doubt, but he's making compelling points. Did you read the article?
I got halfway through and it is compelling. I'm shocked the amount of support this game has gotten. A fool and his money...
There's whole parts (the ones about Derek) that can be safely read past. His points about the status of the game, the number of offices, employees, etc., is worth the read.
No arguments from me, pay for what this is no, don't pay for promises. I hope for this games sake the people who dropped thousands of £ on this game I hope it turns out good.
Thats a long winded article. Most people who have even been semi-following SC(and not completely blinded by wanting it to succeed) already know whats up. There is no way they are going to deliver on the game they have promised. They have bled money from their fans/customers over and over again with those ships and there isnt really much of a game there.
If they ever end up deliver at least something thats worth playing I would be surprised.
On the article, in the updates it says he got a refund but did not mention if he requested one. Did they just give a refund so that they can get him off their back?
How do the backers here feel about this article? Do you feel they are valid points or do you think its jealousy?
Anyway its not like a lot of people didnt see this coming. I didnt think they were going to finish this game in the allotted time or maybe even ever just because theres no accountability for kickstarter money really.
I'm not worried, it's completely normal that they have no real game yet, some of the bigger kickstarter projects or early access game from veteran developers are also not completed in only 3 years and their games have much smaller scope than sc
lets look at the most direct rival, elite dangerous, to this day, in the fundamental sense, there is actually not many gameplay content in elite and it has been on the continuing development mode even before sc conception
however regarding feature creep of sc, I can agree with it
I guess it's the trend nowdays with games; either you are a hardcore PC GAME, or you live long enough to see yourself become a console port
It's not his money, it's not his game, it's really none of his business.
People come and go from companies all the time. Hell, John Carmack left iD software for Facebook....what's the "Smart" analysis on that move?
So, how much of Squadron 42 has he seen and played? None. How do you analyze something you have never seen? Make **** up. That's the smart thing to do.
He can make a long page and word vomit all over it, but it doesn't mean he is right, or even close to being right. Maybe he is right, but we won't know that until the games are released. And by then, this article will have been long forgotten.
Is there any way to fix the updates/patches? Said i had to do some but when i try it keeps saying "unable to find update path". Are my only options are to wait and see if they fix the path or do i re-download all patches from the beginning? Im hoping its not the later.
It would seem the biggest mistake they made with this game might be using Cryengine. Sirbarron started working on a game using it, and I believe he quickly came to the conclusion that it just isn't well suited to this type of game.
