Insurance will cost in game currency. Nothing seems so nuts about that.
The fact that it's becoming a real life simulator is nuts. Insurance, gas...what's next, having to pull into the local space station for snacks and to let the kids out for some "fresh air"? There's a certain point where it ceases to be a game and becomes worthy.

The insurance system is about providing a way to make it less painful to lose a really expensive ship while still having a way to deter people from doi g stupid annoying stuff. The alternative would be just destroying your ship or letting people crash carriers willy nilly without consequence.
Gas doesn't seem like that big a deal. Probably just limits your ability to explore deep space until you get a bigger gas tank.
IMO, the flight model seems to be coming along. It feels like they made some changes to it since I last played. The racing seems like it could be pretty fun and challenging. The flight model of the aurora makes it kind of like drift racing. Haven't raced against other people yet and I haven't tried the racing ships.
BTW, just picked up a thrustmaster t16000 and it is fantastic. The hall effect sensor system is the same as what thrustmaster uses on their high end sticks and it shows. The feel and operation is miles better than the stick that comes with the X52. I think once my CH throttle gets here, I won't even miss the extra controls on the X52 stick.

oh hi you, we know you hate this game, so why are you continue to post in this thread?
I guess it's the trend nowdays with games; either you are a hardcore PC GAME, or you live long enough to see yourself become a console port
I do look forward to the day this reaches v1.0, but I'm just worried it won't be a great single player experience like Wing Commander or Privateer was. There's money to be made in multiplayer, micro transactions etc, and it seems they are building it into the core?
Very glad we have Elite Dangerous to compete with this. I'll be buying both, just not yet.

I miss seing Dawn on my Eizo T965 21" CRT with ATi 9700 PRO. RIP.

You do realise this is also in elite. Just saying...
Just got my CH throttle to combine with a thrustmaster t16000m. It is a pretty sweet combination. Configuring the mapping is a total PITA, but at least there are now fan made programs to help out.

Because I can, so fck you :kthxbye:

Yep, it's one of the reasons I'll probably never play it online. I want to turn off all that bullsh*t and just have fun playing a game, not have to micro manage fuel and insurance like real life.

If he were properly rich, he wouldn't flash his wealth and we wouldn't know about it.
Flashing my wealth? Yes, because I put up pics of my nice house, cars, and all the "bling" I own all over rage...every day. Get over yourself.
It's always fun to see people attack the person and not the argument when they can't win. It's cool though, shows character.

Pulling my leg is $5. Watching me pull my own leg is $10. Watching me pull my leg while I pull your leg is $15

With 5 crew if each person chipped in a percentage it wouldn't be quite as insane a price and it comes with a nice two seater ship too which docks inside.
it's an unbelievable fugly ship... worse than some space ships from japanese anime to think that 3000+ people spend $$$ real for that
I'd not drop $600, but if I were in a guild I'd contribute. I think it looks nice. Like a elaborate yacht for space. Would love to have a fleet of these, at my command.
But I still cannot fathom one person dropping $600 on this.
I mean- how much excess income must you have? What do you do for a living? How many exotic cars must you own? How many mansions must you have? To just drop $600 on a virtual ship.
That's not even first world problems. That's like... I dunno just... wow.

Meh. People spend lots of money on all kinds of dumb things. Just look at the types of cars people drive.
At any rate, my friend bought one for our corp, which seems a little on the crazy side, so I am just gonna freeload off him. Those childless people just have crazy amounts of money to burn.

and im a little annoyed...the ship is next to useless. and there are only 2 game modes to try now.
How will ships be acquired in the future?
cause I don't want to pay 100$ to get a decent ship.
That's little better than the $30 starter package I purchased when the game was first announced.
I'm okay with the ship being almost useless, part of the challenge. I've toyed with the idea of fully upgrading it to make the start a bit easier, but that's the most I'll likely do with my real money.
Everything else I intend to acquire with in-game currency. Every ship will be available for purchase in the game world using in-game currency once the game is out. My initial intent is to just explore, and sell whatever treasures I can find. Heavy emphasis on exploration and just surviving on whatever hidden goods I can stumble across. It'll be a very humble and meager beginning. But it makes it that much more rewarding every time I have enough to purchase a big upgrade, or to purchase a new ship, or hire somebody to help me, etc.
One thing I am annoyed about, albeit it's a minor issue, I did really enjoy the stories that'd be included with their newsletter. It seems they've stopped including these though. They were always entertaining and usually I was bummed when the stories ended.

I hope the game has scale, but what I've seen so far shows me the maps are small with loading screens between each one. = lack of exploration.
Will be interesting once it's eventually finished to see what it does.
That's the thing, it isn't finished. I'm remaining optimistic till the day it's out and I can read end-user reviews myself.
I already own the game thanks to my initial $30 pledge. So no matter what I'll try it out.
One thing that has worried me... is what you mentioned- map sizes. I'll reference the X3 games. I really disliked how the "maps" were setup. Exploration was... difficult at best and usually not very rewarded. The risks were great unless you'd already amassed an armada at your command.
Go to one sector and it's a soupy mess that never ends. In a traditional clear and star-filled sector and see an intriguing nebula in the distance that you want to fly to and explore? Nope. It's just a backdrop that you'll never get close to.
Gotta' be honest, I'm thinking Elite Dangerous maybe my game, or even Limit Theory, but none the less I'm remaining optimistic for Star Citizen. I'm also half expecting the initial launch to be underwhelming, but as additional content is added and the game world expanded it might prove much more fulfilling. Truth be told the only space sim out right now that comes closest to what I want in a game is Evochron Mercenary, though it falls horribly short due to it's lack of content.

And this is where you and lots of people got it wrong about the X games. They are not about exploration (like in Skyrim or something).
They are economic games, about supply and demand and making an empire and chaining factories.
There is nothing to explore, except potential revenue streams.
X games are economic sims, with space combat up in the mix. If you want meaningful exploration look elsewhere. There is as much exploration here is there is Transport Tycoon.
@Omega53
No there is a stand alone version and a package version (with extra goodies) so you are probably looking at the wrong one. Also the new ones don't come with Alpha access. Ships are also going up in price each time they are sold so better to buy earlier (except for the standard pledge ships)
@SirBaron
The current maps are limited to 32bit address space meaning the max a map can be is 8KM without losing precision. When they switch to 64bit each map can be thousands of KM in size. The next patch doubles the existing multiplayer map size without switching to 64bit and also adds 32bit Z buffer (to get rid of Z fighting aspects)

Never said the X games were about exploration...
But as it's something I'm fond of it's a valid reason to enjoy the games less than others. I do also enjoy the economics of the games- it's fun to start from nothing (humble merchant) and work my way up to having my own private army. I just wish there was more exploration. Though on one of my ventures sector hopping I came upon an abandoned space station, which when I was last playing I was in the process of restoring. Never got that done, but if I ever feel like picking the game back up it's what I'd focus on.
But as you said "look elsewhere"... where do you recommend? What space sim offers what I'm interested in? At present... none.
The three I'm eyeing are SC/SQ42, ED, and LT. One of those (or maybe all three in moderation) should satisfy, I hope.
