Imo, crysis 2 did enough things differently to escape from the "generic console fps" category.

This. I can see people missing the larger maps of Crysis / Warhead but the game was still fun to me and I'll get Crysis 3 when it launches.

Like what exactly ? Visuals aside Crysis 2 was a generic console FPS. Sorry but after playing Crysis 1 in all its glory i wasn't about to take a step back and play a half hearted sequel. Crysis 2 showed itself to be a console port...There just wasn't quite enough polish which Crysis 1 had and the jaw dropping factor of Crysis 1 was definately not there to be seen in Crysis 2.

I'm not sure about that. The DX11 graphics and texture patch went a long way to add that "jaw dropping" factor to Crysis 2.

              How is it generic?

The gameplay is nothing like Cod, and that is the definition of a generic console fps.

Let me add that Crysis 2 provides a number of (limited) options on how to approach a target and accomplish goals. None are as "good" as Crysis 1 but it's there nonetheless.

It is generic in that it is pretty much a console rail shooter, just like CoD. Yes the DX11 patch did add a few nice little touches here and there but compared to it's predecessor the graphical tech just wasn't on par. Multiplayer sucked ass big time on Crysis 2 and lack of support of a decent anticheat meant it was over run with hackers which within a few month had it ruined. To top it all off there wasn't that much difference between the console version and PC version and what was promised to be a primarily PC developed game to be ported to the console turned out to be the other way around. The move to the urban setting was something i also wasn't in favour of, it lost all of the atmosphere that was felt in Crysis 1.

Crysis 3 seems to have gone the same route as Crysis 2 and this is a big enough reason for me not to bother with the 3rd installment. Had it gone back to its roots with a real jungle, nice beaches, open world roaming and a PC exclusive that meant full attention to todays tech on PC then i would have a different opinion. TBH im more looking forward to Cryteks F2P shooter (warface) than i ever was to another crysis sequel.

Anyway, thats just my opinion, take it or leave it !

There are, that is why I will not agree with people calling it a generic console fps, since it does not actually have cod style map design.

Thoroughly looking forward to this game!

My dual 5870s struggle with Crysis 2 maxed, wondering how they'll cope with Crysis 3? Visual improvements don't appear to be monumental by any stretch, but I am expecting them to be somewhat improved. Maybe need to start scouring for some cheap used 7970s.

Still looks like a Crysis 2 DLC pack or something... it just doesn't look interesting. I think I'll wait for a demo before purchasing this one. I'd rather Crytek deliver something new on PC rather than pumping out Crysis games.

It still is your basic console fps, one or two gimmicks don't change that.

Also, there are generic console fps games that are fun. Black for instance.

Crysis 2 was pretty damn good. Even with the short storyline I thought the game had sufficient Crysis elements. Upgrades to the suit were nice and the gameplay was solid throughout with the new elements adding to the bad ass feel. Nothing wrong with a slightly linear version of the game at all. If they can bring some of the elements back from original Crysis then its good. I still don't like the bow and arrow but guess everyone is doing it so why not (Tomb Raider, Ass Creed 3). Either way, will bone on release.

So crysis would have been a generic shooter if it had narrower levels?

I don't think so, and that is more or less why I don't think crysis 2 is a generic console fps.

                                          How could it be?

99% of all console shooters are cod with different graphics.

How many of those generic console shooters let you stealth through a level whenever you feel like it?

                                          Cod, no
                                          Moh, no
                                          GoW, no
                                          Uncharted, no
                                          Halo, no

I disagree, I felt it was too little to late actually. The DX11/64Bit and Texture Patch should have been included at release. It just proves that good ol' Yerli and crew put the emphasis on console first rather then continuing the trend for the PC Gamer. And in the end its still just a console port.

Hell remember the demo that had "PUSH START or A or WHATEVER" to continue past the splash screen? LOL. Crytek wants to redeem themselves in the eyes of PC Gamers, design Crysis 4 ( which won't happen as this is the end of the Crysis Trilogy ) from the ground up for PC, no console version, well maybe for the next gen console.

                                                      Yep. My thoughts exactly.

I still haven't finished 2. I got to the part where you're up in a lab on top of a building or something, choppers drop bad guys off, you kill em and go out, overlooking some docks if I remember right.

Well, the rear most line of bad guys started lobbing 'nades at me, but couldn't reach - they were blowing up their own guys up front - and that was one of the better parts of the game

Haven't fired it up since - I want a lot of end user feedback telling me they fixed the horrendous AI before I'll even consider touching C3.

Yep. Anyways I loved Crysis 2; if the multiplayer hadn't been infested by hackers, I would still be playing it.

The only big negative thing I can say about Crytek is that they have some of the worst long-term support in the game industry. They just drop support for their products regardless of their state. They've had this practice since FarCry and it annoys the hell out of me.
