Games Finished January 2023

Going on now for 6th year! I hope it has helped you as it helped me keeping my backlogs in check while enjoying my games.

Not every month someone will be finishing a lot, as there are months where a person just can't finish anything. Then you got that streak going in another month.

Also, if you plan to replay the game, it is fine but don't repeat it at a later month as first completion is what counts.

Another thing is the criteria of what is considered completed in unclear games such as team based multiplayer games; I would say set a target for that. E.g. I considered Overwatch completed when I reached level 100. Or when I finished story mode (which was a long movie sequence) in Guilty Gear Xrd Revelator. You decide what you consider is completed as long as it is reasonable to a certain extend and correlate-able to a single player experience.

DLC completed at a separate time from the main game and has enough content (+1 hour) can be counted as a separate completion.

Console completions can be accepted as long as the main focus is still PC overall.

So numbers are overall the lowest in the past few years. I guess some people aren't gaming as much, some stopped updating here and others, like me, who had the bright idea to play an MMO... Anyway, back to full gaming swing with nice amount of completions for January:

703-Comix Zone: Finally got to play this via the sega genesis collection. Was very hard, very buggy. Had an interesting idea.
704-Vectorman: More interesting than Comix Zone and seems like a Megaman attempt by SEGA. Good ideas.
705-Hades: Finally got around playing this via the steam deck. Loved it. It was great. Had 10 escapes for final ending.
706-Scorn: One of the more interesting games I played. It is a semi walking simulator but the atmosphere and the setting are both unsettling and interesting. The ending was also dark.
707-Need for Speed (2016): Blurgh. Just wanted to continue NFS games from where I took off.
708-The Ascent: Cyber Heist DLC: This was an ok expansion. More of the same.
709-Need for Speed: Payback: Better than NFS2016 but still not where I would liked NFS to be.
710-Vectorman 2: More of the same but in insect world.
711-Sonic 3D Blast: Oh my now I finally know how horrible this was.

1. Apotheorasis. FPS with no video. Seemed like it could have been an interesting concept but I should have watched "gameplay" videos or something first. Weird dialogue with unnecessarily excessive foul language. Even the FPS parts were lame and frustrating. The game has the ability for you to skip to the next checkpoint and that's the only way I was able to finish it. 1/10.

The Witcher 3 has distracted me from mostly everything. Updates for Dying Light 2 and Cloudbuilt distracted me from The Witcher 3. For some reason I installed Ryse and played that for a few minutes.

Eight for me this month but none really noteworthy;
My Lovely Daughter - Interesting idea but shallow.
Encodya - Cyberpunk P+C. Not bad but a lot of padding.
Falconeer - Improved by VR but despite some interesting ideas core mechanic wasn't that great.
Strange Horticulture - Interesting. Would have liked more of it but fun for what it was.
Vitrual Virtual reality - Would probably have been more impressive when it came out but VR has moved on.
Doors Paradox - Simple escape room type puzzles.
The Pathless - Pretty but too much Quick Time mechanics.
Faraway 2 - Another simple escape room type game.

Finished three in January!

• Atari 50 - Watched all the documentaries, read the articles and saw the artifacts. Played all the games. Very cool collection.
• New World to Level 60 - MMO that I managed to get to max level. Not sure if I'll go much further on this one.
• Metroid Dread - Didn't know I was so close to Raven Beak when I stopped playing. Took a few tries but got it done. Very satisfying game!

60 Parsecs! - G rated leisure suit larry in space. Actually fun.

Alpha Protocol - A stealth game in the style of Mass Effect. Apparently it was good back in the day, not sure it holds up.

Battle for Blood - Epic battles within 30 seconds! - So let me state I dislike match 3 games. So a bit of a surprise that this is actually fun (due to the RPG elements). May actually come back and replay it in the distant future.

Bloodbath Kavkaz - Russia has great history, depressing but good writers, military engineers that can do a lot with 1950s tech ... but their video games suck donkey b*lls. (and this is one of the better ones). I would rather give EA money than fund another Russian game developer.


So 3 for 4 this month being playable ... a new personal best.

No, It got panned pretty hard back in the day. Harder than it deserved, frankly. It wasn't that bad, and the branchyness was actually quite good.

Unfortunately, it wasn't worth the wait. It's a wobbly, inconsistent game that gets a few things right, but is filled with so many awkward and glitchy bits you get the feeling that it should have spent some more time behind closed doors.

The notion that Alpha Protocol is unrefined is further reinforced by the visuals, which look dated regardless of your platform of choice, and on consoles tend to chop up fairly frequently. The character models are unremarkable, environments are dull and lifeless, and most animations are weirdly stiff and unnatural, like Thorton's unintentionally hilarious death sequences as he bounces around like rubber. Thorton's voice acting is good, but otherwise it's a mix of suitable and what's hopefully intentionally cheesy. Reject James Bond tunes make up the majority of the soundtrack.

In the “objective video game review” sense, Alpha Protocol is pretty much the worst. It’s super irritating to play, and every time I speak with somebody from Obsidian, the studio that made it, they just shake their head.

Much to my surprise, Alpha Protocol has seen a pretty remarkable public perception turnaround lately. It was widely maligned upon release, but on Steam right now the user review consensus is “very positive” and if you type “alpha protocol is” into Google you’ll get some surprising suggestions

It's been a long time since I played AP. I remember it as having a lot of issues but one thing I remember it did well was mission variety; They could be anything from a short dialogue to large action sequence and frequently you didn't know what to epect until you were in them. They were a refreshing change from some other bigger titles that seemed to think every mission has to be a series of fights with a boss battle to round it off.

Back 4 Blood DLCs - Completed Children of The Worm and River of Blood. Not going to count Tunnels of Terror since that was sort of an add-on to the existing missions (it was sort of cool, but I wish it had just been a full campaign). Overall the DLCs were pretty good, especially the third one (River of Blood). Kind of sad to see no more content is coming out for this game since I thoroughly enjoyed it since release. It's in my top MP gaming experiences with Tribes 1/2 and L4D 1/2. Of course, I can always replay the campaigns but it's not the same as new content.

Gloomhaven - Finished the main campaign after over a year of playing weekly with friends. Will start on the DLC soon, but I'm going to count that separately since this has already been a super long game at over 163 hours. This is actually a really good adaptation of the board game, and I'd say it's actually better since you don't have the hassle of setup/tear-down and having to manually move the monsters. I'd highly recommend this game for playing with friends. Solo I could see it being OK, but having to control multiple characters might be a bit overwhelming at first.

I enjoyed Alpha Protocol back in the day. I remember there being some balance issues, but playing with the pistol I didn't have any real problems. It's not the greatest game I ever played by any means, but at least it was different with the espionage theme.

I did like it, but then again I was going in with no hype and no expectations.
Just compared to today's AAA games it was a bit lacking (though that was to be expected).
It wasn't that laggy / janky for me but it may have been patched or today's hardware has the power to run it properly.

Overall I'd be happy to play it again, jut not sure if I would pay for it if I didn't already own it.



That said, I'm usually not that much into stealth / espionage games, since in real life I'm more of a silverback gorilla on a mix of lsd and speed (i.e. 0% stealth).
Maybe a remake but set in some form of "Archer - verse" would be cool.

Nearly finished with Assassin's Creed: Valhalla on PC and will be playing Guardians of the Galaxy next. Nearly finished with Mario Odyssey on Switch also, and will play Metroid: Dread after that.

I removed Rage3D from my bookmarks to see if I'd miss you guys. On the one hand, here I am! On the other: took me a month before I even noticed something was missing from my daily routine. >.>

Anyway, it's one game for me in January, as I finished Mass Effect 1 (Legendary Edition). The target for 2023 isn't so much to chase finished games, as it is to enjoy what I've already got in the catalogue. Then again, there's a whole bunch of interesting games coming up this year, so who knows!
