Win10 install setup crashing or Modern Setup Host stopped working

Just wanted to share a solution to a frustrating problem I had for the last 4 hours.

I'm updating my GFs older PC with Win7 to full new version Win10.

No matter what I tried (I Googled and tried every suggestion on the web) setup would crash, give me an error msg or lockup.

The solution was to use MY older thumbdrive stick version of Win10 which I used on my PC 2 years ago.

Perhaps she bought a new corrupt Win10 thumbstick? How could I verify this?

this. Did the same. Worked flawless. Also remember you can use your "old" win7-key to activate the win10 install (not that it is needed, but hey, some like it that way). Also, if it were me, i'd stay clear from any "upgrade" and always go with a clean fesh install, but that might be just me

Good idea but the rectangular blue and silver win10 sticks from MS are not write protected somehow?

i still fail to understand why you or her "bought" a Win10-USB-Stick. You can use whatever stick you like as long as the image fits on it.

MS sells or includes a usb stick with the install media on it gai for boxed copies of the os. Nice alternative to that whats it called that i forget the name of some weird coaster thingy that used to store data.

Yup, looks like this. There's also a credit card shaped card in the box with the install key on it.
