    CompatTelRunner.exe making games minimze

This has started happening a lot recently: In Windows 10, I get this split-second command prompt window popup. In some games, so far Mass Effect and STALKER Clear Sky and Call of Pripyat, it will force the game to minimize.

I scanned for malware (MalwareBytes, plus several from Bleeping Computer) but they found nothing, and I use Bitdefender AntiVirus Free Edition.

I started running Process Monitor, and every time this happens it is CompatTelRunner.exe that is loading. It then loads conhost.exe which in turn loads lots of DLLs.

From what I could gather from searches, this is some sort of Windows Update component.

Does anyone have any idea how I can prevent this popup from stealing focus from my games? I can't believe this would be 'expected behavior' for this component.

I searched some more and found that CompatTelRunner.exe is part of some Windows 10 telemetry reporting (Application Experience & Customer Experience Improvement Program). This is from a Reddit post:

You also COMPLETELY missed Application Experience AND Customer Experience Improvement Program.

Right Click Start Menu > Computer Management > Expand 'Task Scheduler' > Expand 'Task Scheduler Library' > Expand 'Microsoft' > Expand 'Windows' > Click on 'Application Experience' > Disable all Tasks in Folder > Click on 'Customer Experience Improvement Program' > Disable all Tasks in Folder
So I did disable these tasks. Now I have to play some games and see if this fixes it...

Shutup should disable the telemetry stuff.

Disabling those tasks seems to have fixed it. Maybe it was the virus scanner trying to scan the process and causing it to focus the CMD window?

I also ran Blackbird and it'll disable those tasks as well. I used both Spybot Anti-Beacon (seemed to cause some problems with running some apps such as Edge browser and Calculator) and O & O Shutup, but Blackbird seems to be the most thorough/deep one.

Disable and remove all Windows spying, telemetry, GWX, Windows 10-upgrade pop-ups, the easy way. No ads, no bullshit. Updated regularly.
