Help connecting a PC to a network with Vista?

Hey, iam having trouble connecting my sisters PC to the network, mine and the host PC (my dads) has XP Pro, her's is Vista 32-bit.

It uses the internet fine, i just can't figure out where anything is with Vista, and i can't connect it. it needs to connect for file transfer. Thanks.

The easiest way to get the HD sharing going is to know the name of the two XP machines and then search for them.

I also find it helpful to make sure everything is on the same Workgroup.

Computer Name/Network Name is in the exact same place it was in XP, just open your eyes and read the side panel options when you click properties on my computer.

You'll feel like a complete newb, and then you'll realize why so many so called "experts" and "nerds" hate Vista.

and then you realize what pathetic network transfer speeds you have using vista, and go running screaming back to xp

              Whats that?

Well i have a new problem. My router went boom, so ive got a new one, and i can only seem to connect to the net off 1 PC.

My dads PC is the host, and then me and my PC connect to the router. Now I cannot get the net working on my dads PC at all. Ive tryed re-boots, rebooting the router and broadband, etc.

At the mo mine is working, but his isn't. If i go network properties i can see both PC's so the network is fine, it just doesn't seem to want to connect to the internet. We both have XP Pro. I don't have to re-do anything do i? shurely i should just plug in the new router and of you go?

Sharing files from an XP to or from a Vista machine is a headache to get set up. I've set it up a couple of times and after each time I always forgot how I ended up doing it but I think I had to run the network setup wizard on all the machines even if they were set up previously. What everyone else says above is correct too, I always have network discovery on and make sure that all the computers are in the same domain/workgroup. I also turn on file and print sharing as well.

You have to install the LLTD Responder package from Microsoft on the XP Boxes and then it will be a snap to network them.

                  HTH!

                  Peace.

Shut off the determine source speed and your networking speed leaps. Or you just use your XP box to pull stuff off the Vista box if you don't have SP1 installed.

I can transfer several GB from XP to my laptop over the wireless in a minute or two. Wireless N ftw!

Doman name on both computers = "Workgroup" *example*

Turn on Vista laptop, type in the pre-shared key, bang... Hey I can see my XP box, and my XP box can see my laptop.

OMFG... So hard... Vista Business to XP Home, Vista Business to XP Pro, and gasp I can even print from my Vista laptop over the wireless to the XP machine...

Btw, I run a dual boot of Vista Ultimate x64 and XP Pro x86 on my desktop, and I wiped off XP Pro x86 on my laptop to run Vista Business x86. x64 Vista > XP/x86 Vista.

Exactly, as long as the domain names are the same, it's a piece of cake. I have two XP boxes connected to a Vista Ultimate box without issue.
Sig changed, because bete told me to.

                        Workgroup, not domain

If you are using the Network browser to find the shares then stop. It's crap and always has been crap with every version of windows. You can go into windows explorer and type \\vistapc to see the shares that are on your PC or use command line net view \\vistapc.
