    I accidentaly deleted a partition...

Hey guys, I have an external 1tb drive which was connected to my computer while I was attempting to install xp.. Every time i've reformatted in the past, the main drive has always been first on the partition list, well... not this time. I wasn't paying enough attention and ended up deleting the partition of my 1tb drive instead of my main drive. I had lots of important stuff on there.. How do I get it back? I looked at a few recovery programs, but I'm just afraid that they wont be able to recover some of my file types.. Any suggestions? thanks.

Been a while since I last had to try and recover files like that I don't remember what program I used before that worked excellent. sorry

I learned a lesson of my own a while back, when ever you are reinstalling windows and you have multiple drives that are not raid drives, unplug them!

Here are 2 programs that I use and recommend:

PC Inspector File Recovery It's FREE as in FREE BEER and works excellently.

GetDataBack It costs about $80 and you have to buy a version for each type of File System you want to recover data from.

Since discovering and using PC Inspector File Recovery, I haven't had to use GetDataBack.

      HTH!

        I can also recommend TestDisk:
TestDisk is a free and open source data recovery software tool designed to recover lost partition and unerase deleted files.

I did the same thing about a week ago. I wanted to delete a partition and clicked yes too fast. I took out about 5 partitions at once. Oops.

TestDisk fixed it. It's not very friendly, but it does work. I wasn't able to get one partition back, but I got most of my important files.

Does it only recover certain file types? I checked one program and it said it did like 300 different file types, but there were some like.CR2 that it didn't list and I want to make sure I get at least 98% of my stuff back..

TestDisk just allows you to restore the partition information. It is NOT a traditional Data recovery program and it is is command line only. If you feel comfortable editing partition table information, it is a good program for that. Did you check out the programs I recommended?

I just downloaded PC inspector so I'll see how that works.. I'm not comfortable using any sort of command line program..

It is kind of confusing, but it's not "command line". It has a menu like any other program. They are just DOS menus.

I've used WinHex to wipe disks before, and it can recover tons of stuff from a one or two pass wipe, so I'd guess it work pretty well on just a deleted partition.

Acronis Disk Suite has a "partition recovery" option, but I've thankfully never had cause to try to use it.

I hadn't looked at TestDisk since around 2001. It's come a long way since then. I figured it was the same old program. I didn't realize it had been deveolped so much further.

                            Good stuff!
