Firefox 3.7 May Take Interface Cues from IE, Chrome

No! I love my menu bar! The translucent backdrop looks nice, though.

Despite all of the improvements in Firefox 3.5, the browser's interface hasn't changed much, and the default Windows theme is looking more dated by the day. Good news, though: Mozilla may actually do something about it in the next release. Designer Stephen Horlander has already posted a few interface mockups for Firefox 3.7 in the official Mozilla wiki.

Horlander warns that his work isn't final and serves "only for brainstorming/exploration." Still, the mockups looks elaborate enough to give us an idea of what Mozilla is shooting for. Evidently, the idea is to blend in more gracefully with Windows Vista and Windows 7's Aero look: tabs and buttons lie on a translucent glass backdrop, and the menu bar has given way to a pair of drop-down menu buttons, a bit like in Google Chrome.
Chrome hasn't just inspired Mozilla designers, either. The new version of Safari for Windows has the same spartan menu bar replacement as Google's browser, with two drop-down buttons for the current page and browser settings.

I want my menu bar. I hate the loss of menu bars in various programs because I have to guess where to find stuff. Also, no program is the same which means standard menue entries are never to be found in the same spot regardless of program. IE7/8, office 2008, and other programs are just plain annoying to use because of this. Totally not userfriendly.

oh man its really hard turning a menu bar on in ie with just 2 clicks of the mouse, i'm sure firefox can implement that feature too, personally, i prefer not having it, keyboard shortcuts still work, and still bring it up if its not shown, if its done the same way can't see it being any different...

          alt f ftw!

The only thing that keeps me holding on to FF (aside from add-ons), is the fact that it's the only one I can put my entire interface on one toolbar. Shortcut icons, then menu, then address bar, then Google bar - all on one line. Then the nice 'n slim tabs right below that, and that's it. If they screw that up, I'm not sure only add-ons can hold me.

Speaking of which, does anyone know of a way to make the tabs thinner (vertically) in IE?
If you're at a Thanksgiving dinner, but you don't like the stuffing or the cranberry sauce or anything else, just pretend like you're eating it, but instead, put it all in your lap and form it into a big mushy ball. Then, later, when you're out back having cigars with the boys, let out a big fake cough and throw the ball to the ground. Then say, "Boy, these are good cigars!" ~ Jack Handey

Unless the functionality disappears. Like the ****ing "go to my download folder" button that was removed from the downloads window so now you have to leave a download history to ****ing find your download folder. What kind of incompetent developer disables an ease of use feature?

                  Not liking this.

It looks more bloated, more wasted space, more clunky.

                  More craptacular.

Don't have to worry about menu bar going away on the Mac, but I wonder how this would look. I loves me some Firefox, but the mock up looks really disjointed. Doesn't look whole. I still don't get why the can't make the search bar and the URL bar the same like it is in Chrome.

When I first saw this, I thought it looked great. Now if only I could get Firefox to look the same on linux as it does on OSX and Windows.

I'm pretty sure Opera lets you do what you described. It also compresses tabs as you open more and more.
