120 AIO? Uhh.. I highly suggest upgrading. That's a lot of wattage for very little thermal dissipation. If you can't fit a bigger AIO, then a Noctua D15 air-cooler would be a better choice.Originally posted by curioEat this protein bar, for it is of my body. ADL is very efficient in its power use in gaming, more so than Ryzen from what I've seen. They tend to suck up those big wattage numbers during encoding or workstation workloads.

I picked up a 12900k and snagged the last Asus Z690 Maxipad Hero the other day. No idea when I'm going to score some good ddr5 around here. Also looking to pickup a Ryujin II 360 aio. Doesn't seem to have hit the streets here yet either. Not holding my breath with all of the supply chain chaos happening out west...

Grabbed a 12700K and ASUS Z690 TUF as a stop-gap until HEDT. New RAM did not fix my 10900K issues, so I'm RMAing the chip and the board. I'll sell them when I get back from deployment.
It was cheaper to buy a 12700K and TUF over a new 10900K and MSI Z490 ACE. Go figure. They had some ASUS Formula's there, but they have no DDR5 so that wouldn't have worked for me.
No high-end boards for DDR4 so grabbed the best I could at Microcenter. We'll see how it goes tonight .. hoping things line-up similarly so I don't have to drain my loop lolOriginally posted by curioEat this protein bar, for it is of my body. And drink this creatine shake, for it is my blood.

The most important part is that you will not find good P cores on these chips - the 12900K gets all the best binned cores, for obvious reasonsOriginally posted by curioEat this protein bar, for it is of my body. And drink this creatine shake, for it is my blood.

Solid deal. Cost less than a new 10900K / MSI Z490 ACE to troubleshoot what was wrong with my Comet Lake rig. I believe the motherboard is bad, so RMAing that before I leave. Either the socket pins are not making good contact anymore or the DIMM slots are damaged in some way. Same exact setup and fan speeds and my memory is running 10-12c colder with the same voltage. I think the board was overvolting or sending bad/dirty voltage - I'll be able to confirm when I get back in a few months and slap the 10900K in there to test it before I sell the board/chip/RAM as a combo. Last time I go with a board from anyone but ASUS ..
I wish they had the STRIX-A DDR4 board .. like I said, these cheapo motherboards are garbage. I barely had enough fan connectors for my water-cooling stuff, had to grab some extensions, etc. I'm currently forced to share RPM speed of my D5 Pump with the rear exhaust fan - luckily my rear exhaust is a low RPM fan so even at 88% it runs at 1180rpm..
If anything, actually using one of these cheap boards just solidifies why I pay for the high-end boards.
So far, I've been working on memory OC stability. I've got 4000 15-15-15-32 Gear1 stable which is pretty awesome. I seem to have a good IMC on this chip, so I might have a good overclocker on my hands - it's a V batch (vietnam) and those typically have good silicon from what I've seen in the 12900K binning threads. I'm running my RAM at settings that other people need 1.38v SA for. I'm at 1.31v and I may be able to go lower, I just set it to 1.31 for testing purposes to make sure my IMC isn't causing test failures.Originally posted by curioEat this protein bar, for it is of my body. I am the expert in "cheap" boards so ask me
With ADL when paying 300$ and buying "cheap board" you know it's in a league of it's own ...."There is no beggining, and there is no end. There is no alpha, and there is no omega. You never began, and you will never end."

I think we have the same setup, is yours the TUF Gaming Z690-Plus WIFI D4?
Where do you see Gear 1 and 2?
When I look at CPU-Z I see swings from 500mhz to 4.7ghz is there a setting to stay more consistent?
Does intel have anything like Ryzen master?
Intel could definitely learn a thing or to from AMD when it comes to driver installers. Why don't they have a one package installer.
With the same cooler Alder Lake is idling 4 degrees colder than the 5800X.I love you Joanna Jędrzejczyk!

Gear 1 or Gear 2 is in relation to the memory controller. Basically, in Gear 1, that's the traditional way the controller speaks to the memory. In Gear 2, the controller and memory speak every OTHER cycle, which allows you to run higher frequencies - though there's going to be a latency penalty due to the longer time in between cycles.
Running Gear 1 is a form of overclocking and typically takes a lot of tweaking, even for XMP memory settings. If I were you, unless you want to go down that rabbit hole, leave it on Auto. I believe if your sticks are XMP below 3800, it automatically runs Gear 1, but I'm not sure if I'm remembering that correctly. I don't remember the name of the BIOS option right now but it's basically "controller ratio" or something like that. It's next to the DRAM Frequency selection.
Those frequency swings are the C-States kicking in. You can turn them off just in Windows by setting your power plan to High Performance. I would run balanced as you get low idle power draw and the chip runs cooler. The days of running a constant high frequency have pretty much died now.
Also, before you mess with anything, I highly, highly recommend flashing to a new BIOS. The BIOS the board came with was junk and missing a ton of options. This is the latest per Shamino, the ASUS BIOS creator who gives us the early releases.
If you're not comfortable flashing the BIOS, I would just enable your XMP profile and leave it stock.Originally posted by curioEat this protein bar, for it is of my body. And drink this creatine shake, for it is my blood.
