Ya its 16-16-16 samsung bdie. Could only get it run at 3200 tho on the old 1700x. Hope the new cpu helps that. Some say its more the mobo than cpu tho but Ill see.

Why would you buy better RAM if you have 3600CL16 b-die? you could easily get that running 3800, which is probably all you'll be able to run on the 5800X3D anyway.Originally posted by curioEat this protein bar, for it is of my body. And drink this creatine shake, for it is my blood.

Im shopping for ram and can only find cas 18 at 3800 and up... They stopped making bdie a while back or just forget about the cas 14 timings because they were too aggressive and unstable?

Problem is that it's voltage locked though, so I wouldn't expect much headroom. But hey, if 4.8 is stable that's a pretty impressive performing chip.CROSSHAIR X670E HERO / R7 7700X / RTX 4090 GAMING OC / TRIDENT Z5 NEO RGB 6000 CL30 / SAMSUNG 980pro 1TB / 2x SAMSUNG 980 1TB / H150i ELITE LCD / ATH-A2000Z / HX1200 / AW3821DW 38" / LG C2 OLED evo 55" / Enthoo 719 / K70 MKII + Zowie S2 / K57 + Harpoon / Xbox Series X Controller / REVERB G2 V2

Pax, if i were you I'd just stick with your current kit. There's nothing out since then that's really better. There are kits sold with better timings, but usually it's because they've pushed more voltage into them (like 1.5v). In terms of bins 3200 CL14 or 3600 CL16 is just about as good as it gets, with it mostly just coming down to luck of the draw beyond that.
If you manually set your timings you should be able to get 3733 or 3800 (whatever the CPU will do) at CL14-15-14-14-28-42, TRFC probably 270 or so, at 1.45v. You may want to add a memory cooling fan if running very tight timings, since b-die becomes increasingly unstable in the mid 40s C, but other than that you should be good to go.
Once you manually set the timings the difference between dual rank and single rank is also only 1-2% I mention this because a lot has been made about getting dual rank, and there is a substantial difference at XMP settings, but it seems to be mostly because XMP settings are very loose. Once you manually tweak most of the difference goes away. Maybe you hit other limitations like IMC.
So, anyway, besides capacity you have about the best DDR4 you can buy already. For gaming 16 GB is still more than sufficient.

Looks like TechPowerUp got their hands on a chip early and have their review out:
https://www.techpowerup.com/review/amd-ryzen-7-5800x3d/
Basically it trades blows with the 12900K and 12900KS: all are within 1% in terms of the average, with the actual results varying by game.
Overall 12900KS looks like a real waste of money to me. Either of the other two are more or less equivalent to it for a lower price. 12900K has more cores for non-gaming tasks. But 5800X3D is cheaper and can slot into existing AM4 motherboards for those who already own one.
In terms of value for money it's hard to argue with a 5800X at half the price, of course. None of these are the best value options.

I would get a 5700X. It's by far the best value of the Zen3 line right now. The 5800X3D really, considering that only few games benefit from the cache and there's no guarantee that future games will, is overpriced at $450, imo.
The 5700X is the price the 5800X should have been to begin with. Super solid deal for $319.Originally posted by curioEat this protein bar, for it is of my body. And drink this creatine shake, for it is my blood.

Very impressive showing in the games that utilize the cache. I'm super interested in the GTAV and Red Dead Redemption results - looks like the Rockstar engine scales very well.
Farcry6 does not surprise me as Ubisoft engines typically loves AMD anyway. Though, I will say, the increase in 1% and 0.1% lows are more important than the average, and even in games that did not scale with the cache (ex: CSGO), the 1% and 0.1% lows are still going up.
I don't get Steve's obsession with the 12900KS though. It's just a binned 12900K for extra $$. The chip is essentially for hardcore OCers that are trying to get better chips for XOC. No one in their right mind would buy it for ~$200+ more than a 12900K just to cheat silicon lottery for their gaming rigLast edited by Nunz; Apr 14, 2022, 05:42 AM.Originally posted by curioEat this protein bar, for it is of my body. If the issue with overclocking is too much voltage potentially harming the VCache, I don't understand why they didn't just disable the voltage adjustment (and maybe the PBO limits), but still allow us to use curve optimizer and auto OC frequency offset?
At least some chips must be good enough to be able to do higher frequency at stock voltage. Manual OC hasn't been the way to go on AMD since Ryzen 3000 series anyway.
Comment
-
The voltage adjustments are locked to 1.35v, if I'm not mistaken.
You can OC through bclk still apparently. Someone got one up to 4.9GhzOriginally posted by curioEat this protein bar, for it is of my body. And drink this creatine shake, for it is my blood.

Personally, I believe in unlocked OCing for all. Free the nipple! But in this case, for the first "test-run" of 3D Cache implementation, I kinda get where AMD is coming from.Originally posted by curioEat this protein bar, for it is of my body. And drink this creatine shake, for it is my blood.

Theres inactive silicon chips on either side of the cache chip to level the cpu that also transfers the heat but the problem with any 3d stacking will be heat dissipation. They have some ingenious ideas on how to do it as they stack more dies in the future but the perf we get from such stacking will be well worth the loss of ocing.
If they can remove the factory ihs and put in a custom copper ihs like the rockitcool kit maybe the temps can be brought down a bit.
