Expensive... but I think it really is the CPU to beat right now... high IPC, high boost clocks, and lots of cores.
My world is a world of concepts and principles, not a battlefield - "war" is simply the wrong metaphor for where I'm coming from.

Do Ryzen processors need a giant skyscraper air cooler like Intel CPU's do? I miss the days of slapping on a simple air cooler.

Assuming 5000 series works in a similar way, what I learned from my 3700X is the old tweaking method of dropping vcore to lowest possible stable voltage in order to get coolest temps actually negatively affects performance with Ryzen. When I first built this system I used a low negative vcore offset which lowered temps and was stable, BUT my Cinebench score suffered. I get better performance when the vcore and temps are a bit higher.

These CPUs are designed to spike voltages at times for clockspeed boosting to get more performance under load. If you limit the vcore to a fixed amount it wont be able to spike to get the max boosted performance. Initially seeing CPU vcore spikes nearing 1.5v it worried me but its actually normal for these chips and perfectly safe as long as they are still dropping back to 1.0v at idle per usual.

Its best to have a good cooling solution and keep vcore up a little. Ryzen processors will throttle down clockspeed with lower vcore to maintain stability.

what boost clock are you getting in cinebench? I'm only getting 4.00 to 4.2 only
I score about 2k lower then you in multi and 517 or so on single

For ASUS I would go with the x570 dark hero. I'm currently using the Gigabyte Aorus master 570.

The bot picked up a 5800X order last night off amazon. Sadly, won't be shipping until Jan 4th. I went ahead and cancelled the 5600X order that was shipping on Dec 4th.

Unless I get lucky and a drop hits while I'm online with it somewhere actually in stock, then this is gonna be it. There is no MC anywhere near me so that is off the table.

I don't blame you honestly. At this point, it's just too much trouble to be arsed to camp on the computer for drop alerts or drop whatever you're doing and run to the computer if you get an alert while away.

This is why I like the bot, you just let it run and it either gets one or it doesn't. I've shut mine down now, since the 5800X order is in, and am not going to use it again except to try and get a 6800XT if I fail tomorrow.

I don’t think availability was an issue for me. It was more the performance delta not being meaningful. I spent at least 2 hours going through about 10 different videos and benching myself to see if there is a use case where I will benefit. Just didn’t come out, unfortunately.

SAM will most likely work with a 5900x or any AMD CPU on both NV and AMD cards long before they get it working on old Intel CPU's

and that 2% to 13% at 4k will matter

It's up to Intel to get it working on there hardware and I don't think older stuff will ever happen. I have little knowledge of how it works, but this is what Bobvodka said in the Big Navi discussion, post #2082. Considering his profession, I trust his take on it, which goes again the claim Nvidia or even AMD will ever have it working properly on pci-3.

It's built upon an ability to modify/extend the BAR for PCIe rather than fix it at start up - this is only possible from PCIe 4 onwards (spec for the feature modifies the 3.1 PCIe).

                                                    So to make it work you need;
                                                    - PCIe4 I/O hub on the CPU
                                                    - PCIe4 bus
                                                    - PCIe4 I/O hub on the GPU
                                                    - Compatible BIOS
                                                    - Kernel support for it (WDDM2.0 on Windows, Linux kernel code which has been about for some time now)

AMD just happen to be the first to implement this, thus they stick a marketing banner on it.

Fun Fact : Back in the initial release for Vulkan on the 10x0 series, NV didn't expose a segment of GPU memory that could be written to directly from the CPU. That didn't turn up until some time later via driver updates. AMD had it from day one.

Few CPUs actually need a large air cooler, but they will run faster if they have it. That's true for Ryzen especially which will clock down as temperatures increase. But, I mean, they will run OK with the stock cooler which is pretty compact.

Overall Ryzen is more energy efficient than Intel's current Lake architecture, so the cooling requirements should be lower core for core.

The 1800X and 2700X actually draw as much power as the 5950X in multi-threaded workloads. Granted, the smaller surface area of 7nm makes heat transfer more problematic, but then again the 5950X has two dies producing that heat vs one on the older CPUs.
