Its gonna be 12/24 still. The 7nm+ node has about 15-20% better transsitor density but its not gonna be enough to seriously jack up core counts. Rumor is zen 4 on 5nm later will do that tho.

12 seems like a big improvement from the 6 I have right now and will be OK at 5 G.

You won't see 5 GHz on all 12 cores with amd anytime soon, 4900X will be 4.5 GHz max if I have to guess, a bit more if you're lucky and have great cooler.
I guess it's the trend nowdays with games; either you are a hardcore PC GAME, or you live long enough to see yourself become a console port

Given that both Ryzen and Rocketlake will have decent IPC gains, I'm fairly confident RKL will be significantly faster for gaming much like current gen. Pretty sure 5.3 all core (or higher) will be achievable on RKL where as OC is rather limited with AMD.

That said, 4900X will clearly be the better buy. 12 vs 8 cores is a hard sell for Intel.. Have had my 10700k as place holder for 4 months now, certain I'd be dropping RKL into this board, but the value just isn't there..

I must be getting old, I've gone from planning an RTX 3090 + RKL build to most likely a far more sensible RTX 3080 + 4900X machine. Sure it's not as fast, both CPU and GPU, but they are incredibly smarter options.

AMD provided a number of entry-level processors. The explanation of this strategy is very simple. AMD is not interested in giving users additional performance for Zen2, as the Zen3 release is in October.
That was obvious as many expected amd to launch both navi2 and zen3 at the same time.

                One big superlaunch.

yeah if AMD really brought up single threaded performance and IPC like rumors have been saying I may have to look at upgrading my 3900x even.

The price delta between those 2 options is equal to at least 1 new console purchase and quite possibly 1.5 new consoles. So yes I may end up sticking with a 4900X + RTX 3080 as well.

Will you be getting 4000 series or will stay with 8086K?

I likely won't feel a need to upgrade to 4000 series when they release, but still good to know i have an upgrade path in the future. Maybe in a year or so if i can find a good deal on a used one I'll do it.

I lived with a Sandy Bridge proc for nearly 10 years. Generally i don't need to upgrade the CPU often.

This year just upgrading GPU. 8086K is doing great for me.

Not sure it would really make a difference for me anyways gaming at 4K 60. Been wanting to pull the trigger on a new 4K 120 Hdmi 2.1 tv though. Can’t get myself to do it

Even although 3700X is still a great CPU. I would rather buy a 4700X over this for just 15-20% IPC improvement. Zen 3 is coming very soon in a couple months. I wouldn't wasted on money on Zen 2 CPU.

Sounds pretty much confirmed. Its Ryzen 5000:

In a new tweet from software engineer Patrick Shur, we have some new information on AMD's new Zen 3-based CPU family which will reportedly be called the Ryzen 5000 series. Most were expecting the Ryzen 4000 series (which is already inside of laptops) but it seems AMD could leave the Ryzen 4000 nomenclature for its Renoir FP6 (mobile) and Renoir AM4 (desktop) series.

Shur tweeted that we are to expect the flagship Ryzen 9 5900X as a 12-core, 24-thread CPU while the Ryzen 7 5800X is an 8-core, 16-thread design. Better yet, these new samples are reportedly hitting a huge 4.9GHz which should give Intel a run for its money with its 10th gen Core CPUs.

Rumor of x670 chipset coming with zen3.

Wouldnt be surprised if the only update vs x570 was a fanless chipset...

As for the alleged specifications, the AMD Ryzen 9 5900X is said to feature an IPC improvement of up to 20%. One of the main areas of improvement where AMD has put lots of effort into tuning on Zen 3 is the clock frequencies. As such, the AMD Ryzen 9 5900X is said to reach boost clocks of up to 5 GHz. That's a +300 MHz improvement over the Ryzen 9 3900XT

150w TDP.. People complain about Intel but will applaud that? That's insane power draw with a very small surface area to dissipate heat. I'll buy one for sure if that's the case, but people who banged Intel for "14nm plus x100 durrrr hot chips durrrr" will look awfully hypocritical praising those kind of numbers.

Oh, and +300Mhz improvement over 3900XT? Who are we kidding that's BS single-core boost that it rarely holds. I don't know too many hitting 4.5-4.6 all-core..

Excited for this platform regardless, but can't wait to see how people backpedal out of the hypocrisy.

Not sure how they measure tdp... is it max tdp at single core boost or all core boost? Does it include the IO die?

intel currently has up to 260w so not sure Id worry if 150w ryzen 4k was max tdp.

I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure the 10900K has a TDP of 125 watts. If the new Ryzen can do 5ghz all core rather than single core boost it will break TDP just like the Intel chips do. I think my two year old I9 9900K has a TDP of 95 watts but it can pull 180 watts at 5Ghz all core during benchmarks.

And 3080 doesn't seem to be coming out at MSRP unless you are lucky and stay awake at US times. So yeah. Will see what's up next year and then build.
