problem copying large files to external HD

why is it that when i am trying to copy a 5gb file to a 500gb external HD (w/ more than 50% free space) i get an error saying:
"the file is too large for the destination file system"

    quite annoying

    appreciate the help

    the cpt.
What if when we died, we went back in time and started over as many times as we wanted until we finally picked a life we wanted, and that is this one.

Btw... the average cruising airspeed velocity of an unladen European Swallow is roughly 11 meters per second, or 24 miles an hour.

    Does this help ?

It is regrettable that many personal fortunes are made by people who simply manipulate money and contribute nothing to their society.

The dream of eternal life is far more compelling than living one.

If you don't want to reformat that HDD, you could always pack it into a split rar file. (Uncompressed too)
