What's going on with this? There's no internet working downstairs on the PC however mine works up here. We are through a wired/wireless linksys router. Downstairs it is wired to the router, and I am through wireless. It worked 2 days ago no problem and now suddenly it doesn't. The PC downstairs is not using a firewall or anything, it is on windows 2000. It has very little software installed on it, mostly barebones stuff, however I can't even ping the router through it.

could it be the cable or network card on that PC?
this may sound stupid.. but uh.. have you tried restarting the computer? does the router see the computer? (I know the PC doesn't see the router), you tried turning off and back on the router?
if the modem is in range try plugging the PC directly into the modem to rule out your router as the problem.. my guess would be that there's some hardware problem (NIC, cable) on your downstairs win2k box.. try reinstalling drivers, try restarting services (they do crash.. and most of the time you don't know it), check the even viewer and see what kinda errors there are.

1 - power off/power on the router
2 - restart the pc
3 - if not working still, change the cable
4 - check if you've changed drivers on the NIC, if so go back, if not try new ones
5 - check your ipconfig; are you using dhcp or manual? check to see that your settings haven't changed from before. if dhcp try setting a manual ip and gateway etc, in the range of dhcp and see if it helps.

It's definately a router config problem I think. What's weird is they were both just assigned automatic addresses. So why would the PC wired to the router downstairs suddenly decide not to work? I ran the cable from the modem to the desktop downstairs and internet was fine. Once I put it back through the router, problems arised again. Suggestions? Router and modem both have been reset.Last edited by Alientank; Jan 7, 2006, 10:53 AM.Intel Core i5 4690 | ASUS Z87-A | Corsair Vengeance 16 GB DDR3-1600

Start with the easiest stuff, try a different port in the back of the router.
I'm a big fan of fixing it so it works like it's supposed to, but I'm not there to fix it... so how 'bout a work-around??
Go to the properties of your LAC, then properties of Internet protocol, instead of 'Obtain an IP address automatically', select 'specify an IP address' (this will also have the same effect in DNS)... then input an IP in the range your router is set to give out addresses in (stay on the other end of the range from where it dols out addresses from), use your router as both the gateway and DNS server (no secondary DNS needed) and when you click in the subnet it should auto-populate. OK, OK, and Bob's your uncle.
I got a pair of tweezers, a can of air, and some bacardi :\
