nice. what's your hypervisor of choice?

    Comment

At the moment I use "user level" virtualisation in VirtualBox because of the ease of use, although I'm tempted with VMWare's ESXi. One of the recent updates of VirtualBox allows you to set up an "internal network" such that all the VM's can see each other.

My biggest issue is that I still want a decent visual experience when I'm not working, I don't think any of the bare metal hypervisors can virtualise PCI-Express, and the graphics cards that go with it. My (companies) computer supports Intel's VT-d to virtualise devices, but I don't think any of the current hypervisors support that.

So I generally virtualise on Linux, and dual boot into Windows 7 for gaming.

Ahhh I can make another meaningful contribution to the thread.... my newest build. This one replaces the last Q6600 desktop with the massive water cooling rig (soon to be for sale), but improves on it almost across the board with lower power consumption at stock speeds.

The first few minutes of windows 7 after installation.

          Cable Management Shmable Management.

And the slightly less cluttered CPU side.

All built up around a Core i7 860, 8GB of DDR3 1600, an HD 5750, a Xonar DX, an X25-M 80GB, and a 400W Corsair PSU. Dang this thing is fast.

Oh and coming soon is a revision of my Mini ITX rig.

You know I thought about that big time, but decided against it. Corner is too small for that. If not for that I would have three of these and a 59X when they come out for sure.

Greasy, are both LCDs connected to one stand? That's pretty cool, have a link or a picture of the back?

Yeah, I picked it up from amazon.

I need longer DVI cables in order to clean it up a bit. Not really worried about it though.

That looks nice. I might want to setup something like that for my work PC.

That's actually why I bought this setup. I use a VM for work (when I work from home), and VMware player 3 supports multi monitors in unity mode.

Why the moron bean counters in the office can't seem to realize that spending 250 bucks on another monitor makes us a lot more productive is beyond me.

His PSU is on the top, seems like an older case so he has no holes to come through the other side = spaghetti madness.

Good luck with that, I hated doing the whole wiring stuff and just zip-tied everything and at least attempted to make it look nice.

Now, my HAF932 has nice cut holes that i slip all my cables through. Looks awesome inside when you can't see any cables really.

More, because I live in "Rip-off Britain". They worked out at about $815 each after tax, and that's *before* all the e-tailers put their prices up by $150 (£100) because the 5970 is so hard to get hold of.

This one replaces the last Q6600 desktop with the massive water cooling rig (soon to be for sale), but improves on it almost across the board with lower power consumption at stock speeds.

All built up around a Core i7 860, 8GB of DDR3 1600, an HD 5750, a Xonar DX, an X25-M 80GB, and a 400W Corsair PSU. Dang this thing is fast.

Got mad at the ****ty wiring job I did when I installed the GTX 285's and the Corsair TX850 power supply. So I spent an hour an took the pc completely apart and rewired it:

Yes I moved my DVDRW drives to the bottom of the case. Mainly because it requires less effort to insert a DVD when they are down here (lol), and two it allows me to shove my unused power cables in the gap between the bottom drive and the bottom of the case.

I also went against corsairs reccomendation on the H50 cooler. They recommend you have the back fan slot be an intake fan to bring in cold air for the cpu. What I did was install 2 fans on the radiator for a push/pull setup. Took some digging to find screws long enough for the second fan, but it was worth it. Core i5 idles at 34C with 1.4volts at 4GHz and my graphics cards idle at 39C and 42C. Best of all I cant hear my pc anymore, reworking the wires and changing the position of the fans in the front allowed me to turn the fans to low instead of medium.

Next upgrade for me is aftermarket coolers for the GTX 285's. I've seen 86C in Crysis. , Just a tad too high for my liking and cranking the fan speed means I can hear them. Looking at this:

Arctic Cooling Accelero Extreme GTX Pro, supposed to be released sometime this month.

There is no dedicated tesselator, and if you use that DX11 feature, it will take large amounts of shader time, used inefficiently as is the case with general purpose hardware. You will then need the same shaders again to render the triangles. 250K to 1 Million triangles on the GT300 should be notably slower than straight 1 Million triangles.

Specs: HP Athlon XP 3000+, 2GB RAM, GeForce 6200, 250GB Hard drive.

In the corner of my bedroom, I have this small corner desk setup to surf the web, do some downloading, and e-mails before I sleep or get up in the morning. The HP DV2-1030 is light and thin enough to take to bed and watch some anime before going to bed.

Specs: Athlon Neo 1.6Ghz, 4GB RAM, 12.1" Screen, 320GB Hard Drive, Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit

When I need to get some serious work done, I goto the dining table and boot up my MacBook Pro. A minimalist workspace but there are no distractions. Dining table is usually clear when it isn't mealtime so it's easy to focus.

Specs: MacBook Pro 15" 2.53Ghz Unibody, 4GB RAM, 500GB Hard Drive, Snow Leopard.

HP Mini 110 used to quickly jump on the web and e-mail while watching TV. I also take this thing with me on vacation since it's so light and does it's job very well. I dumped the Vaio P for this and haven't looked back since.
