Another small mod for my pc:
So my Gigabyte motherboard fan profile system is really lame, as it is limited to a simple ramp mapping. The SIV fan control software they provide is also unreliable, the service sometimes doesn't load or just stops working altogether, which illuminates the overhead seat belt sign as it begins its takeoff sequence. So I decided to fix this with a proper fan controller.
I had no open bay for a fancy feast touch panel controller, and I didn't like the looks of a bunch of wires going to a PCI slot controller, so I did this:
4 pot pci slot fan controller, with the slot plate removed. Took a simple project box and drilled some holes in it.
The finished product. This sits just below my stealth tray, and is completely hidden when the front grill is attached. The controller runs from switched off, to 5-12v range. Since my H105 cooler only gets 3C cooler at full speed, I keep them all at the lowest setting, which is nice and quiet.

Got the woman into gaming
Took some spare parts I had laying around. Need to sleeve some cables or buy sleeved cables but temp build. Had the stuff to do another wc loop complete but meh thats one extra pc I need to do wc maintenance on. Haven't had air for a while, this setup is amazingly quiet.
Also,
Better looking ram for me that I can't run at full speed cuz my proc isn't golden

The case is pretty clean, besides that mess of front panel wires (IIRC, I cleaned those up a little sense this photo was taken.THG is to computer hardware what MTV is to music.

Buying a new case is harder than any other thing I have ever had to purchase. I want an NZXT but EVERY single review says how shitty the paint jobs are and how easily they scratch and wrinkle. What a ****ing bummer. You would think in their many revisions of the 440 based cases they would have upped their paint jobs.RIP John Dunsworth

1) under $100
2) doesn't look garish
3) has the ports I need
4) will accommodate any video card
5) not unnecessarily large
6) back panel cable rooting
7) Several hundred good new egg reviews.
8) no cover that needs to be open to use the ports.
Normally I do this by punching in my desired specs into newegg, sorting by most reviews, and scrolling through the top results for the cheapest and least garish option.
A few real quick full ATX cases I would consider (all have USB 3.0 front panel connections)
Fractal design R4 or R5 ($80 - $90)
NZXT s340 ($70)
Corsair 200R ($60)
The Corsair 200R looks cheap and practical. The main thing wrong with it is being just about as plane as can be. Everything a person needs and nothing you don't.
If it weren't for the quality of the paint, the s340 would be an easy win for me. With the paint being the only thing wrong with it, I might go for it anyway (but like I said, I hardly ever even look at my case.) To me it looks like it has the best layout.
I regularly find myself tempted by the R4 or R5; though I believe forward facing ports tend to be more useful. Often enough either put something on top of the computer, or place it in a cubby that doesn't have a wealth of overhead clearance.
It's too bad that the cooler master N400 has that single behemoth drive bay. I really like the N200 and would appreciate a full ATX version of the same.
At any rate. This is the list I would browse for a full ATX case. I didn't see any other options that peaked my interest within the first several pages.
The remaining option I would consider is to wait for cases with USB-c front ports.THG is to computer hardware what MTV is to music.

May be worth the extra $5.

UGH!!! the MasterCase 5 Maker series is out on newegg and it has some pretty cool upgrades. It is 189 dollars for a mid tower though and that is very pricey. I was thinking about grabbing the 130 dollar version and getting the solid tempered glass side panel off their website for 50 bucks. I'd save 10 bucks and get a sweet ass side panel. CHOICES!!!
I caught a glimpse of some IN Win cases with tempered glass and I don't think I could go acrylic now. It's a shame the In Win cases interiors are so, so bad.RIP John Dunsworth

I always laugh when I see people arguing over whether or not to spend an extra $20 for a slightly better GPU, and then they buy a $200 case over $100 case like the extra $100 is nothing. It is just so far from the way I think about these things.THG is to computer hardware what MTV is to music.

The thing is that the mastercase 5 starts at just about $100. You can fully upgrade it to a maker 5 afterwards, if you want to. The base model is great on it's own, and cooler master is actually selling the upgrade pieces at reasonable prices. It's more than buying a higher tier straight off, but they are not ripping you off or anything. If you don't need those pieces, you still have a good case, but the mastercase series is intended for those who want something that can accommodate the future, without investing a boatload on the kitchen sink.
Another great thing about the mastercase series is that they are active in the modding community and are actually going to produce more stuff for it, like a one piece front grill, a case integrated gpu droop support, the tempered glass panel, and recently a vertical gpu adapter, which is something I really want.
I really have no regrets buying the pro 5 instead of waiting for the maker, cause I can make mine into one if I want.

Id rather grab a pro and then spend the 50 on the glass panel if I could get that upgraded panel.
I love that USB-c connectors are reversible and that both ends are identical, but I would probably stick with a hub that connects to the back side panel until the USB motherboard headers get figured out.
The biggest difference for desktop use, compared to USB 3.0 and 3.1, is that USB-c can carry a-lot more power. For a laptop, it is frick'n awsome. My laptop's USB-c connected dock powers the laptop with 150W; provides connections for two 4k displays over display port to the laptop's GPU; while also acting as a USB hub. Instead of doing display port to an internal GPU, it can also provide a PCI-e link to an external GPU.
Truly we live in an amazing time.
Will be great when you can buy a motherboard that has an ethernet connection, audio connection, and everything else is USB-c connectors.THG is to computer hardware what MTV is to music.

Yeah I figured that I def know my mobo doesn't support any such thing. But I figured future proofing couldn't hurt.
I really just need to pull the trigger on something FFS. I want that Maker 5 real bad, I don't need it at all but I could also eat ramen noodles 3 times a day and don't need to eat steak either.RIP John Dunsworth

The maker upgrade parts are coming, but there is no set release date as the maker was just recently released itself. Though if you have not bought a 5 or pro 5 yet and want the maker parts, buy the maker system as it may be a bit more expensive than buying a 5 or 5 pro and upgrading, plus you wont have to wait for the parts to be released.
The upgrade parts are definitely coming though, as my tempered glass panel is being shipped

I based it on the length of time my thermal take tower has been around over 10 years. 189 bucks over 10 years isn't that much money..

edit: NVM, it's an ITX case. The Mid Tower ATX version is way out of my case price range. Totally want to do an ITX build for my next system, though that it still several years off.THG is to computer hardware what MTV is to music.

Once the 1080TI comes out I'll be picking up an EK Predator and a waterblock to cool the GPU. I'll also have my H110 running in there as well for the CPU.. So I need lots of space for 2 360 rads.
We'll see. I'll probably have the 1080TI before I get a new case anyway.Originally posted by curioEat this protein bar, for it is of my body. And drink this creatine shake, for it is my blood.
