Maybe at times, but certainly there must be a pretty big jump in frame rate in most titles.
The real issue with SLI is alternate frame rendering. It can increase the number of frames and smoothness of the image, but can't reduce the latency inherent in the time it takes the gpu to make the frame. Not a problem for 3D, if one GPU basically ends up making a frame for one eye and the other for the other eye, but it is hard for me to see the added value for standard screens.
Hopefully split frame rendering will become a real thing soon.
