It's not full already My first array nearly was however, so I had to get the remaining 10 disks. But this upgrade should last for years

Blu-Ray rips ? I have about 1 TB of "personal" files (pics, MP3 rips, backgrounds). Can't imagine needing 40 TB

40TB... daaaayum! I'm having a hard time wrapping my mind around that volume of data. Sure... backups for NASA or the DoD or whatever- 40TB is probably nothing.

But personal use? 40TB... you got me curious.

I use 86GB of my SSD, and 600GB of my 1TB. How do you need 40TB? You are like a digital pack-rat.

                    Honestly I think it's awesome.

How long ago was 40GB considered inconcievably huge? What do you think we'll be saying about 40TB in 15 years?

If I had the money I'd have a setup like Slawter's. Why not? I'm gonna' hazzard a guess and say that he isn't using all 40TB for one specific thing. It's like a redundant backup. Let's say he's got 250GB in pictures, 4TB in movies, and another 250GB in music. That's only 4.5TB of data. One backup of that becomes 9TB. A redundant backup, depending on how it's configured, could become 18TB now. That's almost half of his storage right there.

Very simple example but it shows that much space, though it is a low, can get filled relatively quickly if your backup implementation has enough redundancy.

The only issue with such sizes is that I find it hard to have a working solution for off-site backup.

True. I only save the most important data on an off-site backup.
The real issue is not the required storage but the current connection, especially upload, speeds here. I can't sync it online. So I have to sync it manually about once a month.

I also manually sync, well backup. Call me crazy, I no longer use RAID for my 20TB server. I have 12 drives on the server, 12 backup drives, 1 nightly drive and 4 floating drives. Once a month I see which drives have new files needed for backup, lets say drives 2,3 and 7. The floater drives backup the needed drives, and then the original drive backups becomes the floaters, and so on. This way I still have a good backup in case the server drives or the floaters fail to verify. The nightly drive is a backup drive that stays in the server to hold a copy of new data between monthlies, its cleared after the monthly backups have been completed.

Critical data that's too large for online services, like my photos, get perma storage. Once the collection gets big enough to fill an entire drive, example drive 2 is one of my full photo drives, another backup is made and sent off-site. That drive set, live/backup/storage, is now frozen until the live drive dies.

Part backup, part media server. Media files are shared for the HTPC but I also run a few streaming services in the background, for example for playback on iOS.

It also acts as a big network share. I don't use a backup software that uses its own, compressed file format. The files are "open" on the server and shared in my LAN. So all computers have access to everything if needed. And can sync to their own local disk easily.

Frozen as in, the drive set state is frozen. Since the drive is full and no data on it changes, new backups are no longer made, the drives sit where they currently are until the active drive in the server goes bad. I currently have 2 drives sets in the frozen state, eventually they will all become that way once they are full.

Wow! THAT is awesome! Why the 6 SSDs? Gonna' go along with what somebody else already said and hazzard that it's for a large Steam and Origin library, maybe?

Those add up to what- 1.5TB? Gotta' wonder if you ever even see any loading screens.

You're right! So it's got to be that gaming collection. I don't know how many individual titles I have but it's no where near 500, and I'm already pushing 500GB... just counted and I have about 79 games apparently. Add in the few titles I have on Origin and I'm just over 500GB worth.

500 games... yeah he likely needs all those 512GB SSDs.

The LSI SAS 2308 controller is built in to the motherboard, not sure of the clockspeed on the PPC 440 (800MHz stock) and if it has NVcache (doesn't look like it), but ASRock claim up to 3.8GB/s with 8 SSD's.

851 games now. About 300GB left on the array.

Here's a shot at an initial benchmark I've done. I've seen people getting higher with some tweaking to the controller, but I'm more than happy with this performance.

Decided I'd try something a bit different and see if I like it. I've been considering mounting my 37" 1080P TV to the wall in front of my desk and using that as a primary monitor. Then use the 24" as a secondary display. I wasn't sure if I would be sitting too close or how it might look...figured I'd give it a shot. Couldn't hurt anything. My entertainment center is narrow and fit in the gap between the wall and desk. I stacked books until it was the right height and hooked it all up. Going to use it like this for a little bit and see if it's worth doing. If I like it, this opens up the opportunity to get a new extremely thin LED tv and then I'll mount the speakers on the wall to the left and right and center in the middle of course. This makes for a cleaner look and a LOT more desk space. Especially when I finish my new build and get the PC off the desk.

                                                          Anyway, here it is.

First impressions...not sure yet. It's not as clear as the 24" monitor quite obviuosly, and I actually have to move my head just a tiny bit to see the full screen...but just barely. I can always move my desk back a bit as well. I have a ton of room to do so. Hell, I'd actually be able to get behind it easier if I did anyway. This might not be bad with the desk back another foot or so. Going to try some gaming this way.

                                                          What do you guys think?

EDIT: It got dwarfed in the photo...it doesn't look that big. But it seems overly huge in person sitting in front of it. Will take some getting use to I think.

Set the TV to its PC profile if it has one, it should be nice and clear then, just like a large monitor. By default it will have TV post processing enabled, which is good for TV, but not for text or pc images. What model is it?

I have a 40" LED connected to my PC too and like to use it occasionally.

The TV isn't anything too great, but it does have decent IQ. It's a Toshiba Regza display, though I'm not sure which model at the moment. I just played BF3 on it, and it was outstanding. Like an IMAX almost it's so big. Need to see what kind of fatigue I'll get with it before I make any long term decisions.

EDIT: It was on "Preference" for the picture mode, but I had already been using this as a PC display to play games using a controller. There was no difference in image going from "Preference" to "PC".
