    GoldenEye 007 Finally (Re)Releasing

After what seems like eons the game is finally coming out "soon".

Will be on Xbox, including Game Pass, and the Nintendo Switch.

https://twitter.com/NintendoAmerica/...93240315494403 (says there is online play too so I assume will be the same on Xbox)

Since its original release in 1997, GoldenEye 007 has remained a beloved classic in the hearts and minds of millions of fans worldwide. Today, we’re excited to announce that a new generation of players will soon get to experience the genre-defining stealth shooter gameplay for themselves, faithfully recreated to preserve the action and excitement of […]

They must have finally figured out the licensing issues around the game.

AFAIK MS has a say (yes) Rare has a say (they said yes), Nintendo has a say (they first said yes, then no, then....it lapsed and after management changes I guess they finally said yes again), Whoever was the 007 license owner at the time needed to say OK but they didnt own the license anymore...and it bounced around.

Looks like online play may be exclusive to the Switch, at least for now.

The iconic Bond video game GoldenEye 007 is to be released for Nintendo Switch Online and Xbox Game Pass. As first announced during the latest Nintendo Direct broadcast, the Nintendo 64 classic is coming soon to the console’s Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Switch Online service. Microsoft also confirmed news today (September 13) that a 4K... Read more »

I wonder what's keeping online play from Xbox. Maybe complexity of implementation?

[edit] Apparently the Switch is just getting the original N64 version and it's run through the emulator. Online play is done by tricking the game into thinking it's still running local multiplayer. Xbox is getting the remastered version and multiplayer would need to be added in. I guess they didn't feel it was worth it.

Well ****. It appears like the Xbox version is just a tweaked N64 port, not the XBLA 360 remaster/remake from way back that was put on ice.

Understandable why the Switch gets an updated N64 port....its their online virtual console. They don't change those except the resolution and maybe texture sharpness to make it work better on modern giant TV's.

I wonder if there was some kind of agreement that the Xbox had to use the updated N64 port and not their HD one in order for it actually get it released?

                Neat.

Not going to bother digging up my xbox in order to play it, IMO, goldeneye and perfect dark did not stand the test of time.

Unfortunately I think you're largely correct. The controls, especially the part that is built around stopping to move into a targeting mode, was simply a product of a by-gone era. You actually can run dual analog controls on a n64 with either game, if you're willing to hold 2 controllers. It's neat, and there's even been folks who have hacked controllers together for that purpose... but the game wasn't really designed around that.

Actually I'm surprised nobody has designed a 3d-printable bracket that you can clip 2 n64 controllers into. I'd spend a day printing that.

Both games can be fun today, but yeah you have to be willing to accept a certain amount of retro clunkiness. Games like Doom & Quake have aged much better.

Both Goldeneye & PD still have lots of elements that hold up. Both have great atmosphere and the graphics (mostly) hold up, especially if played in HD on an emulator... although Goldeneye still has a bit of that Saturn-era character modeling/animation. Perfect Dark has impeccable art direction, and imo looks particularly great in HD, especially if you can get it to run at a buttery smooth 60fps.

                  [yt]-L1x_u2UkNw[/yt]

Goldeneye local multiplayer is great simple fun... but I don't think I'd bother playing it online.

Perfect Dark's multiplayer though, I think could stand up well today. It's incredibly robust, with coop, counter-coop, multiplayer challenge missions, bot matches, lots of game modes, etc. That being said, PD online multiplayer has been available on xbox for years and I've never bothered to try it, so maybe it doesn't hold that much appeal.

One thing I loved about both games was how the mission requirements scaled with the difficulty level. On the easy difficulty, you basically just plow through to the exit and you win, whereas harder difficulty levels make you explore more of the level and accomplish additional tasks along the way. Unfortunately, those mission objectives came from the mario64 era, where missions could be pretty obtuse and difficult to decipher.

Anyways, I think both games still offer a ton of fun for players who are motivated to work for it. But yeah, neither have aged as gracefully as the top PC fps classics.

                            Is that real?
Seems like everything ive found indicated that everyone was getting confused about what version of 007 is getting released and calling any new ones "remakes".

Currently we know the Switch/Xbox release is just a modern re-release (with modern HD resolution and FPS improvements)
And it does seem like an updated Xbox remake/remaster will come out as well...(not even sure if its that unreleased HD remaster or a completely ground up remake ala FF7, not counting that updated CoD-like remake with Daniel Craig instead of Pierce Brosnan)

Sounds like 2 different releases. First they'll release the original, then they'll follow-up with the remake later. At least that's how I'm interpreting it.

btw, there's already a Goldeneye remake called "Goldeneye Reloaded", that released on Wii, xbox360, and PS3. I never played it myself, but I remember the reception was pretty luke-warm.

It was not bad, pretty good i'd say. It was kind of exclusive to the Wii first for a while before they got ported to Xbox and PS3.
They did a good job of tweaking the story to be more "modern" and with Daniel Craig as the lead instead of Pierce Brosnan.

It plays very much like all the CoD's though which isnt neccessarily a bad thing (and i suppose the other 007 games by Activision are the same way)

haha it was during the height of the Craig era bond and I suppose Activision wanted to cash in on it (i dont remember if the other 007 games were before or after Goldeneye...but from i recall most of them sucked).

For whatever reason they wanted to remake Goldeneye and they probably had to use him due to licensing.

I suppose its just like those modern movie remakes (like robocop or total recall), except in this case the end result didnt actually suck.

As I recall, around the same time they did a Sean Connery 007 game too. Maybe I should go back and play that one?

That story reads like he's just talking about the low effort re-releases we're getting soon and calling them remakes for some reason. He's a bit behind everyone else in reporting. There hasn't been any additional announcements about a remake coming later.
