You need the online plan eventually to play online

Aside from when at home using your net connection, what details about this are available for mobile? Or is this still just all speculation??

Yeah this is what I was talking about before when I said looks like you'll need to use your phone for online play when away from Wifi.

So there's going to be a phone app for voice chat and connecting to online gaming when outside. My guess is the voice chat and online connectivity will be tied together into the same app which explains a lot, but we'll see.

ZThat quote doesn't mention online gaming for outside just that it can be used for match making.

Its basically match making and friends system,and a way to use voice app that should have been just installed on the switch it self.

You can use any console or any device via mobile Hotspot but unless you have a unlimited plan, which most don't you'd be pretty likely not to. Hell most plans in Europe are for 2-4GB, which even without online gaming sucks.

If we are to assume Nintendo views the Switch as a mobile handheld device then why not assume they're talking about gaming outside?

I think the fact they are going to use an app from your mobile phone says a lot in itself. They are trying to give a solution to gaming outside away from home internet. Seems pretty clear to me. They must have decided using people's smartphones would be a necessity.

Also, I do agree it would seem to make more sense if the Switch handled the voice chat, but maybe since they're going to have an app for online gaming why not tie all the facets of online play together into the one app? We didn't design the thing, maybe Nintendo's engineers saw that it would be most efficient to do it that way. Anyways I am very interested it seeing how this will work and I hope we get full details soon.

Theyre making problems not solutions, in some ways I can see the benefits of the app, if the switch also had the same features. Kinda like steam app, ps app on android etc

But this alone? Eh? We shall see but should have been on the switch.

All it does is voice chat, text chat to friends and private match making.

You don't need the app to play outside, you can do that anyway via normal in game match making.

You need the app to talk to friends if you're at home or outside. That's it

You can play the switch outside online without the app. So what's the point of the app? Besides being able to talk to friends

For Nintendo's sake of damage control I hope it does , I mean you can already plan online without the phone, if it's just for talking to friends and that's it, I'll be fine.

OK then I misunderstood. So the app is going to be strictly for connecting with friends to send online gaming invites, and voice chat. I was under the assumption you would need the app for online gaming connectivity when away from home.

I can see how it would make sense to have the voice chat and friend invites together as features within the app. But then the question is will the app be necessary. Like you said hopefully the Switch itself will get all the same features, so you won't have to have it.

I hope. The switch gets the app too. But on the phone would be neat, see when friends are online.
And maybe even small companion games, stats, etc.

It's for voice chat, you don't need the phone to play online games. You need the online plan eventually to play online, but the phone isn't needed for online gaming,only for private matchmaking and voice chat.

But yeah why they didn't just do it all on the switch is beyond me.

How do you play when not on wifi then? You have to have a phone for wifi tethering. Or a separate accessory that allows for cell tower connection.

And is anyone on the free trial now? Am I and just not aware?

And what about a dang browser, or some. Netflix pleeeeeze. Make this my one accessory.
Throw in an email, or heck, since it runs Linux, give me some Google apps.
But Nintendo needs to grow up when it comes to apps, online stuff, etc, so I'm sure this won't happen. Japan just isn't as mobile o line dependant I suppose. But why so backwards?

I get it, Nintendo is the iPhone of consoles, but would be nice if they listened to the people who buy their stuff for a change.

the mario rabbids looks the best. the new xcom game ive almost finished, i like the complexity, and with mario they have added the world aspect, not just a base camp, then battle.
kirby would be one i would rent, unless my sun really likes it. its def a throwback to the kirby on gameboy.
funny, i forgot about kirby as an IP.
i already got the pass for zelda dlc, nice content they are giving us for the 20$, and so soon!
not sure about the voice acting in Xeboblah- looks too generic jrpg for me.

FWIW: metroid 2 was stunning, and i have finished it maybe five times in 20 years.

Odyssey looks great. I'm really excited for that one. Pretty stoked for Pokemon. I haven't played a pokemon game since blue. I did enjoy that and I'm sure that it'll be a blast. The yoshi trailer looked cool too.

Any news on the virtual console? Or is the switch still in beta for the foreseeable future?

Mario Odyssey looks weird. Lots of different graphic styles, with realistic humans and dinosaurs. Will wait and see how it turns out, but I'm a little worried about this one.

Yeah the art consistency isnt in line with Nintendos usually stuff. But they have some time to polish it up and make it right so I trust Nintendo will do whats needed.

Yeah looks great. Doesn't seem to be procedural like XCOM though but Mario style is enough. Hopefully it's not Too easy being a Nintendo game.

That's because the controllers were hard wired to the console (and the wires almost impossibly short).
