It's a matter of diminishing returns imo. Years ago simply doubling the amount of triangles produced a much better mesh. Now you can multiply by a factor of 10 and it hardly matters. Next-gen should focus on things like better ai, level design, art direction, and storytelling.

Next Gen refers to the time line of a consoles release NOT its graphical prowess!
If that is the case, then its a purposely misleading term.

Man there are a lot of whiny graphic snobs on the Internet!
Different people spend their money for different reasons. Both sony and microsoft have been hard at work to promote the graphics of both their systems. Imo the only real whiny, snobbish people are the ones that think everyone should buy something for the exact reasons they do.

Think I'd sit this one out for at least a year. Way too many games to play on PC.

Man there are a lot of whiny graphic snobs on the Internet! They all complain like their eyes will bleed or heads will melt if they look at anything that isn't super high res or has every effect possible. Good god get a life and enjoy games as the entertainment they present not just how they look. Funny thing thing is that the best looking games these whiny people play now will look 'ugly' years from now... so of you only play the latest and greatest and never look back? Very few true gamers anymore, it's like people that only like the flashy popcorn flicks that have zero substance to them. What do people honesty expect from hardware that costs a fraction of what they like to compare it to (top-end PCs)

I'll likely get a PS4 a year or so from now, I stopped buying gaming consoles at launch anymore. I will pass on the Xbone after what I saw Microsoft pull over the months...will be my first playstation since the first one. Sony looks to have pulled off a very nice machine for $399...just imagine if they had gone for Xbone 's price of $100 more. Just wish I liked the dual shock controllers more
Its not any kind of snobbery i was just hoping that all games used 1080p as standard, the graphics can and will improve as programmers get used to the new consoles.

I'd agree with that statement but i saw the youtube trailer for "Deep down" running at 60fps on PS4 and that looks so smooth and fluid it looked nearly real it was amazing, pity its going towards a free-to-play model.

I hope so. I'm definitely getting one, but probably not until after the holidays.

Is the ps4 going to have a hardware scaler, or is it going to be software like ps3

A couple of years ago I did some pretty detailed benchmarking of GPU vs a LaCie Photon20visionII scaling. The LCD won, ATi came very close, nVidia last. It was interesting, because it showed me how important LCD scaling is if you can't play in native resolution.

I'm assuming AMD hasn't gotten worse, so here's hoping for some high quality GPU scaling for both boxes

As much as I'd like every game to be 1080p/60fps like some are demanding or complaining about it was never going to happen on a lot of games for the near future if you use your head and think about it...

Developers have had a fairly short time with finalized hardware and they need/want to show off games with more per pixel effects and wow factor and aiming for 720p/30fps makes that much easier to achieve. Not everyone is a hardware geek and will notice much difference in resolution. Current gen can run at 1080p /60fps just not with a huge amount of per pixel effects. If developers went for full res max fps right at the get go the games wouldn't look much different than the best games out now given the new hardware and unfamiliarity with it. Even if the PS5 is 4x as powerful and capable of 1440p/2160p most first or 2nd gen software will likely run at 1080p and have more people complaining about it.

I just wish people would use their heads sometimes

People complain about anything and everything. You act like its something indigenous to the gaming industry.

I don't get how some people can look at the ps4 version of bf4 and say: that barely looks any better than the console version of bf3.

Good question. I think 720p/60 will be good enough if a hardware scaler is used.

I'm guessing we are looking at 720p/60 and 1080p/30 for most games.

I don't think it has to be one or the other. A decent hardware scaler (which the Xbox One allegedly has) would open the door to custom resolutions that would otherwise look rough on a 1080p display.

It should also become less of an issue once 4k TVs arrive where the higher DPI should make most scaling artifacts disappear. Non-native resolutions should become more CRT-like in nature.

I know the feeling. I had two 360s die before switching to PS3.

Then I thought about how many hard drives and video cards failed on me over the same period.

I had one RROD, which was the first console to ever crap out on me, I'm still using my PS3 FAT though it got it's HD upgraded to 320GB. *PS Plus fault*

I'd be surprised if these new machines fail to be honest or at least on the scale of RROD.

I'm going the pc route, and hoping that pc gaming improves. I have high hopes for what steam is doing.

So far, I feel burned by the industry, being that nobody seems to be developing games for the console that I did choose.

RRoD was a special case but I think it's mostly luck of the draw.

what are you talking about? just because EA isn't currently developing for Wii U doesn't mean no one is.

take a look at the wii u releases sense launch and compare the exclusives to ps3 and 360 and while ps3 does have The Last of us Wii U is still the clear winner there and as a pc gamer who has a Launch day ps4 pre ordered I'm still more excited about Wii U then PS4 or Xbox one.

I don't think most people would consider the wii u as the clear winner if you would compare its library to the ps3 library.

I said for exclusives sense the Wii U launch not the entire library.

Ok, but the ps3 actually has a decent list of exclusives this year, covering more genres than the wii u exlusive games, so I don't think it as clear cut as you claimed.

I don't know if I would go as far as to say covering more genres as most of the ps3 exclusives were JRPG's with a huge emphasis on the J and beat em ups but I'm not saying ps3 was bad for exclusives at all in fact the 2013 list coupled with ps+ is what made ps4 the clear launch day decision for me between that and XBone.

The list of wii u exclusives sense launch is about 3x the size of the ps3 and that includes games like Monster Hunter 3 ultimate, Game & Wario, Zelda wind waker HD, Lego City, both New super Mario/Luigi games, Nintendo land, Pikmin 3, The wonderful 101, ZombiU and 2 scribblenauts games.

My main point here is that Wii U has hardly been a neglected console.

take a look at the wii u releases sense launch and compare the exclusives to ps3 and 360 and while ps3 does have The Last of us Wii U is still the clear winner there and as a pc gamer who has a Launch day ps4 pre ordered I'm still more excited about Wii U then PS4 or Xbox one.
There is no denying that the Wii U is getting the short end of the stick when it comes to multiplats. Most multiplats just aren't being developed for it, and the ones that are, are in some way gimped.

But that's not entirely what I'm on about. I think that the slow start of the Wii U might prove to be the rule, not the exception. While there is a lot of buzz on the internet about how great the PS4 and Xbox One will be, it's buzz by those that would talk about videogames on the internet. My point, I don't know that I see the average Joe just foaming at the mouth over these things. I suspect that the majority of people are just comfortable with the PS3 and 360. Most, I think, might just hold out a while. Lets not forget the buzz around the Wii U before it launched. I do suspect that slow Wii U sales could have been due to people holding out on the next consoles just to see what there is to offer, at least in part.

How will 3rd parties that are apprehensive to the Wii U react, if they come to find that the PS4 and Xbox One just don't sell as well as they had hoped?

Anyway, the PC is the most stable platform. SteamOS is the first gaming software refresh since the beginning of windows. It seems that the clean slate approach of consoles can leave developers alienated by an install base reset. Granted, SteamOS will have this too, but the PC platform has legs, and so that refresh is not expected to occur again anytime too soon. How well would things work out if every new cell phone had a different OS? Essentially, that's what happens with consoles. It just lacks the stability, and I think that lack of stability is what can alienate fans and developers alike. So for now, I guess I will deal with PC gaming with the hopes that Valve fixes it.

Not my fault, I voted Ron Paul.
