Assistance connecting my X-Box 360 to my PC via a wireless network?

    Hello,

I just got the Gears of War Limited Edition Xbox 360. It took me hours to finally get the system to use my router to connect to the internet and Xbox Live. However, I still cannot get it to access my PC or Windows Media Center for sharing of media on my network between my PC and Xbox 360.

I have googled countless search terms, tried just about everything I could think of to no avail. Xbox will not connect to my PC. I have a Netgear WPN824v3 router and Windows Vista Ultimate. No windows firewall enabled. Please assist me before I go insane.

I have had luck getting the windows extender icon to pop up in my task bar, however when I run the setup and type the code in from my XBox, it fails after the second step when attempting to configure the extended device.

    Please

Make sure that the Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service is running. Open Windows Media player and add stuff to your library. On the Xbox 360 under My Xbox, go to Music, Video or Pictures and select the connect to PC option for your source. As for the Media Extender, I haven't looked into using that yet.

The problem with Windows Media sharing is it will only share files that are compatible with the 360. Say... mp4 (m4v) with H264 with high profile 4.1 max with stereo LC-AAC files. If it has AC3 audio or 5.1 AAC, it won't play the file.

After more fiddling I finally got it to work. Now I just need to get .mkv files to play on my 360 and I will be golden.

Anyone have any advice for me? I have Windows Vista Ultimate, not Windows 7.

mkvs aren't supported afaik. You'll have to transcode them to something that it will read.

What was the cause of the problem with your networking and how did you fix it btw?

My router was using my computer's MAC address as the primary MAC address for the internet connection and not the router's MAC address.

Now I can't get my Xbox 360 to play mp4 type files. How do people get this system setup properly, this has taken me like 10 hours already and I still haven't fixed all the bugs.

It is my understanding that the Xbox 360 should be able to play mp4s. I have the option media update!
