The End of the High Def Disc Format War?

Warner Home Video's press conference concerning the Total Hi Def disc that has HD DVD and Blu-ray all on one disc is currently ongoing, and it has stated that the discs are able to contain dual layers of both HD DVD and Blu-ray on one disc. The first Total Hi Def releases will hit in the second half of this year, but no specific titles have yet been announced. At the conference, Warner used a copy of Superman to show off how it worked in an HD DVD player, Blu-ray player, and the recently announced LG Super Multi player that plays either. Finally, Warner claims it will not cost "materially" more than a regular disc. At the conference, already an exec from Best Buy has come out in support of the format, but whether or not other studios would ever pick up on Total Hi Def releases is still unknown, although Warner claims they would not have to pay any licensing fees to Warner for using it. For more information, check out our live coverage of the Warner Home Video press event.

Maybe this'll become like the whole DVD+/- thing.

Is there more audio tracks for the HD part listed on the back?

Otherwise, I wouldnt have thought that possible, unless it was doublesided.. Or is it?

It won't be the end because not every studio will be doing this. Not to mention Sony Pictures won't be caught dead releasing their stuff on HD-DVD unless they're forced to.

It is a doublesided disc. I won't be buying any of these HD-DVD/Blu-Ray dual-format discs. I refuse to aid in lining Sony's pockets.

Same thing I say, I will not buy anything Blue Ray until I have no other choice what so ever. Simply because I hate sony. And I hate to see them swoop in and control everything as if he own the whole god damned world.

Exactly my feelings. It's not that BD is a bad tech or anything. I think the prices for the units is crazy and that's why I think it will fail but it's Sony's past and the arrogance at how they go about doing business.

The rootkit fiasco was bad enough. Claiming that the 360 was Xbox 1.5 and then release a console that looked worse was just plain stupid. Their refusal to use VC-1 from the get-go was just dumb. Having a press release about your controller winning a Emmy when it never did. Saying that they could release a console with no games and it was sale anyway.

If the Blu-Ray ends up winning as the next format I still won't purchase a BD player. I'll either download HD movies on Xbox Live! or wait until HD on-demand comes to my cable provider.

^Hold on now guys, think about what you're doing:

You want Sony to die. If Sony dies, MSFT has no competition. If MSFT has no competition, they'll try to extort us, guaranteed.

I guess you assume Sony won't extort it's customers if it's the only one left holding what everyone wants? If anything they have shown everyone they are more willing to screw their customers more than any other corporation that I have seen.

Yes because we all know Sony is the only Company that gets to make decisions for Blu-Ray right? not the BDA consisting of many companies other than Sony who's job it is to oversee the format right?

                      Ummmm...yeah?

Sony, by appointment by the above Blu-ray Disc Association Board of Directors as the Blu-ray Disc License Entity is responsible for Blu-ray Disc Information Agreement (IA) and Blu-ray Disc License Agreement.
If all of these companies are paying Sony to use Blu-Ray technology how much leverage do they have?

Not to mention HP, at one time, wanted iHD in Blu-Ray and it didn't happen. I guess being a member of the BDA dosen't mean much.

, yes because undermining your supporters will go such a long way to helping your format succeed eh?. If everyone else said no to iHD and HP was the only supporter(or they where simply out voted)then it wouldn't matter if HP was on the board would it?

Patent player MPEG LA today announced that the first meeting of essential Blu-ray disc patent owners, consisting of 17 companies, was held in Los Angeles earlier this month.
17 patent owners. It's not just Sony.

Yeah, it only took them what, 15 years? to finally man up and produce a VHS machine?

Nope, I don't assume that. I know that they'd do that even faster and stronger than MSFT would if they were the last one standing. But since that'll never happen...
