Anybody watches Standard def TV(576i/480i) on a 1366 X 768 LCD and likes the picture?

    Hi
Do conventional SD broadcasts look good on LCD/Plasmas ?

Do you like the picture? Or prefer CRT tubes for the best 480i/576i picture?

Well it looks kind of blurry on HDTVs but I still prefer it that the plain CRTs.

I think SD looks like CRAP on any hidef set.

I love Battlestar Galactica but because it is only broadcast on SD I refuse to watch it and wait for the shows to come to DVD.

Depends on what signal you got too. A crappy analog signal on a somewhat bigger TV won't be very pleasing to the eyes.

Analog broadcast looks sucky, digital broadcast (through cable box) is okay.

Aren't DVD-s also supposed to look bad on LCDs because of native resolution issues? (We are assuming that the DVD player/ HDTV does not provide upscaling and uses native 480i/p)

The SD quality will depend on two things. How well your HDTV scales 480i/p material to its native resolution, and the quality of the SD source. These days lots of people get their SD through digital cable, and in many cases it's highly compressed, making it look like an old VCD.

And if your cable/sat provider gets the UniversalHD network, they air Battlestar in hi-def, although possibly delayed from its original airing on SciFi. It looks gooooood in hi-def.

The red fires shone between it and the mantled shoulders vast and dark. From a mouth unseen there came a deadly laughter. 'Old fool!' he said. 'Old fool! This is my hour. Do you not know Death when you see it? Die now and curse in vain!' And with that he lifted high his sword and flames ran down the blade."

Your DVD's native resolution will be 480i or 480p, your LCD will have a different native resolution, most these days are 1366x768, but some are coming out at 1920x1080. Either in the DVD player or in the TV, the DVD image has to get scaled up to the TV's resolution. How it looks will depend on the quality of that scaling, as well as the quality of the de-interlacing or inverse telecining(converting 30fps video back to 24fps film). With most DVD players, the video gets converted from digital to analog before it's re-scaled, and once inside the TV it gets re-converted to digital. These conversions add to the quality loss. Newer DVD's with HDMI inputs often do their own scaling while the information is still in its original digital format, before sending it to the TV. Of course, these players will re-scale it to 720p or 1080i, requiring another re-scaling to the TV's native resolution. If your HDTV's built-in scaler is good, then setting the DVD player to leave the video at a digital 480 may be best, so the video only gets re-scaled once.
