5.1 Speaker System for under 600 dollars?

    Hello,

I have a friend who is in the market for a low price 5.1 system for his new apartment. He isn't an audio freak in anyway, I doubt he would be able to tell the difference between a record and cd upon listening, but since i will be spending a lot of time over there i want to hear something decent. Anyway, he is currently looking for a set of 5.1 speakers and a receiver all for under 600 dollars. Is it possible to find anything even halfway decent for this price range? do you guys have any suggestions as to which is the best set in this price range?

He will use the speakers mainly for movie watching, but also to hook up to his laptop occasionally for party music. If anyone could offer some help as to the best set for this price, I'd appreciate it. thanks

For under $600, there are lots and lots of Home Theater in a box packages. While they wont be as good as buying components separately, They are many out there that sound decent. I recommend this since he is in an apartment, and the small speakers and sub won't do much damage, keeping the neighbors from complaining.

If he wanted though, he could piece together a pretty good set for that much.

A low end Harmon Kardon receiver and a set of Fluance speakers is a great budget route to go!

i have the older version of those onyko speakers came as 6.1 i think they are great have them on a Karmon Hardon receiver.

For another room in my house,i recently bought a philips home theater in a box for $188 dvd player with bulit in receiver, 5 speakers. for $188 i think it sounds pretty good, it's better than a lot of $200-250 systems ive heard.

I'd probably get a Yamaha RX-V559 receiver and Infinity TSS-450 speakers.

TSS-1100's are much more powerful, and I think they are on Amazon right now for $98/each
