Great lightning capture Tyr, Osirus i really like your wedding shots. Man i need to get into that field more, just dont think i have the creativity for it. Raz, ship over the one in the blue plskthx!
She didn't want anything crazy or expensive. Just something to replace our aging Canon SD700is(2006). So we set a budget of $200 and I started researching. How I came to this particular model, I don't know being there's about a zillion choices in this category and all seem to be a hair different. Literally gave me a headache while researching.
I guess it came down to reading about Sony and the RX100 and in general Sonys commit to the P&S market. They seem to be on top of the game in this segment. I figured if one of their top tier cameras was that good, the lower models would stem from that. After narrowing it down to a few models from different brands and a couple from Sony, I started looking at reviews. So from there I just read user opinions and the wx80 seem to get consistently rave reviews with nearly no cons.

Nice, I've toyed with selling all the DSLR stuff and going this route. My time is so limited right now I don't see my DSLR gear getting utilized that often. I've already downsized recently with selling 4 lens(have 3 only now). At this point, where I'd miss the DSLR the most is shooting my sons sports.

I've been able to borrow my buddies Nikon 70-200 VR II.
Here's a picture of real world samples between the Nikkor and Sigma. Same settings on the camera, same settings in LR4 and VR/OS enabled. The only difference is the 5mm in the fl.
I'm able to keep the Nikkor up through the weekend which will allow me to shoot my sons first soccer game of the season.
IQ I feel there's not much of a difference but I do feel the Nikon excels in the AF department a little. I'll get a better feel for it after the weekend.

Well the Sony WX80 is going back. It's just too small, even for my wife. Extended use causes cramping in both of our hands. Also the res of the LCD( only 2XXXXX on a 2.7") makes it hard to judge sharpness and the screen just seems laggy.
I'm going to up our budget. I'm now looking at the Panasonic LX7($328), Olympus XZ-1 10($259) and the Nikon P7700($378).
The Nikon is really pushing the limits on what we want to spend(originally under $200 lol) on a P&S but I really like what I see from it IQ wise and it's features(wife will mostly use auto). It also seem to be a bit on the bigger side though maybe stretching the idea of it being a 'pocket' camera. But size adds fl, it also zooms to 200mm. What's also nice with the Nikon is I have a SB600 to play with it.
The Oly seems perfect except that I keep reading the the video is bunk. This is huge as this camera will have to serve as our primary video recorder. I guess it just hunts in low light like crazy and it only does 720p. Otherwise I read the IQ is superb and it's price is very appealing.
I'm really leaning towards the panny. It really seem to be geared toward low light(f1.4-2.3)photos with excellent video capabilities to. It seems to have decent manual controls for when I want to use it. Price is a little high but not to bad.
Any one have any input?

I figured that would happen. Those low end P&S are just crap and it's no wonder why they are going down the drain and losing to smartphones. It'll be interesting to see how these camera makers play the game now with Apple and Android owning their turf.
Sony and Fuji are really innovating on the higher end, but again, it appeals to camera enthusiasts and not the masses. Canon seems to be going the video route and Nikon is just completely lost.
We're extremely happy with the LX7. It's well built, has a nice clean easy UI, the f1.4 lens takes great indoor picture without a flash, and it just feels like a well polished product.

Razeus, do you think the RX100 will eat a lot of the DSLR time up?
To tell you the truth, I'm enjoying the smaller format. This LX7 is really nice. I'm surprised how far P&S came from the last time I bought one(2006 SD700is).
I grow tired of lugging around the DSLR at times. More times then not people are intimidated by the large camera when shooting family/work function type events.. Which makes me uncomfortable and I either don't take the shots or I rush myself and they look like crap anyways lol. I may start looking into other systems or maybe just get a P&S for myself(lx7 is my wifes ).

Tyr, i really like that leaf shot... looks awesome from that camera.
In regards to your question to Raz, for me having a smaller camera is almost essential. I mean they cant compare to the big boys in many ways, but the biggest thing that it has for it is convenience. That and with the quality that they can product is just awesome. There's no way a cell camera can come close to something like this just yet. I think there's a special place for P&S but for me i just cant decide on what format to go. Super small like what you guys have or maybe one step up and go with a mirrorless interchangeable lens.

Took the RX100 to a destination wedding for the weekend and took alot of "nature shots" (trees, rocks, rivers, etc.). Didn't miss the DSLR too much. I think I'll be using the DSLR for portrait sessions and events. The RX100 for pretty much everything else. It's really that good. If Sony comes through the the NEX full-frame, it may be Nikon's time to go (but then again, Sony needs to step up its lens game). I can easily see me going the Fuji X-Pro route when they release the 2nd version (I think the first version needs work despite all of the firmware updates). Or even the X-E1

If or when P&S get a bit better at shooting sports(youth anyways), I'll probably jump ship from the DSLR. I'm betting that's not to far around the corner.
Look forward to seeing some more of your samples from the RX100.
