Nice pic Tyr. I hope to be getting my 50mm in a few weeks hopefully sooner. Went out shooting with a friend who is an actual Photographer and he let me use some of his lenses. For such an small buy in cost the 50mm 1.8 just takes great shots I found. Very anxious!
You're better off at the Canon photographyonthenet forums...
Likewise... it could lead to fantastic discussions where everyone can learn from it. The thing with photography is that even tho there are many technical rules and such, its very common to break these rules as problem solving will be 2nd nature and important skill to master. Even when in a controlled environment like a studio there will be issues to overcome.
There are a lot of talented and knowledgeable people on here, fire away!

Let it rip man! There are a lot of talented and knowledgeable people on here, fire away!
I have had my Nikon D3100 for about a year now and just about at my 10,000 picture.
What I would like to know is how can I use the internal flash while in manual mode. Because when I depress the shutter button a partial way for the light meter to take its reading, then make the according adjustments to the shutter speed for a proper exposure, if I use the flash its way over exposed.
Just interested in using flash in outdoor portraits shots (taken in shade of course).
Sumnabitch is heavy. I'm pretty amped. can't wait to get outta work.
I think this will be my main portrait lens outdoors. I'll leave the 85mm 1.8G for indoors stuff or when I need DOF.
If you can get the space between you, 200mm and f/2.8 the DOF is glorious.
Yeah, its heavy. not too bad though. I used to shoot with a monopod at races but now I just do handheld. Get a blackrapid strap and use the bayonette lug on the foot. best **** ever.

Partial depress of the shutter is usually to focus. The light reading should be continuous...
When you use a flash, you have 2 exposures, one for the flash, one for the ambient/environment.
I always use manual mode for flash photography. I first set my exposure so I get the photo the way I want, then the flash is in TTL mode so it auto makes the proper exposure for the flash. Sometimes I +/- the EC if it's too bright/dark. The photo always comes out nicely. Good balance between exposing the environment with flash on the subject.

1st, are you using the built in flash or a flash unit?
2nd, get out of the preset modes and get into manual. (i know you said youre using manual but for others who are reading)
The presets always eff around too much and make the images too under/overexposed. You can tweak those modes a bit but IMO its even more confusing because each mode allows different settings to be tweaked. Let alone the camera tries to out think you even though you changed your settings... so its a constant fight on whos right.
Raz pretty much summed it up when talking about exposing without flash first, but to help detail it some more...
There are 3 things that will help correct/control this; Aperture, shutter speed, ISO... the exposure triangle.
Its hard to give you a definite answer on what settings to use, but you need to play around with this triangle to get what your looking for. To help try setting your camera to f/4 - iso400 - 1/40 when doing interior shots with flash. From there play around with the exposure triangle to get what you want. If possible use TTL, it will definitely help control the flashes output.
Now if there's going to be ambient lighting in the background, i suggest exposing for the background first and then take your shot with flash (ttl). This will help keep the subject exposed while not killing any nice ambient light.
Hope this makes sense and hopefully it helps!
Try a few shots and let us know how it goes... post them and it will be easier to guide yeah.

I'm going to have so much fun with this at the Anime convention at the end of the month.
grats on the lens.... want one but i just cant justify the cost for it right now... especially seeing that i dont use that focal all that much these days. I was eyeing the new tamron 70-200 but its kinda pricey as well.... may just get the nikon f4 seeing that i love the new vr and i hardly use 2.8 when i do use that lens.
photo looks good to me, unless theres something specific your trying to achive.

Ya. I finally decided to start a side business and do some senior portraits and what not. I want to find someone to tag along and learn to do weddings. The 70-200 is probably the last lens for the stuff I shoot. Unless I talk myself into the Sigma 35 1.4. I can do 99.99% of my shots with just the 35 and the 70-200.
Saw those sabre strip boxes, and didn't feel like paying like almost $300 for 2 of them.
So, I decided to make 2 of my own strip boxes
One is getting there, heres what I got so far.
bought a 10 foot length of 3" white PVC pipe.
2 end caps
some metal for the bracket to attatch to my light stands.
a 2x4 foot shoot of egg crate for the grid
painted the outside with some plastidip
about $40 total to make two of them
can be used with one flash, or stick another one in the top like this on optical slave mode and use 2 flashes for more power
a quick selfie with one flash camera right
the egg crate grid is attatched via 4 Velcro tabs and is removable,
I may paint that black, and add to pieces on the sides.
and im going to make a softbox cover aswell that I can Velcro on quick instead of the grid.
also am going to make a little base I can attach on so I don't have to use the lightstands. right now it will stand on the metal bracket, it just not sturdy at all.

Best of luck man.... i just started doing the same thing and im loving it so far. Granted its only on the side but it paid for all of my mew gear and then some... just launched my FB/G+ page along with my main webpage and business cards, hopefully good things will happen in 2013. Be sure to get all of that stuff inline, its amazing how quickly things can come up.

Ya I need to make an FB page. That plus my twitter and Flickr. I need to get some cards made for an anime event at the end of this month.
How'd you make a G+ page?
While in G+ On the left side where the icons are theres a place called 'pages'.... go in there and hook it up! Just did that yesterday, takes sometime getting use to it, just waiting for them to mail me my verification pin card.

DxOMark published their test results and conclusions for the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM lens with Nikon mount: “The lens sets a new benchmark for optical performance for a retro-focus lens in this focal length and it’s a feat that’s even more remarkable given the price is well-below that of any of the big name brands.” With […]

Gotta watch your white balance very carefully if you want to do high key.

Explaaain'lucy... i mean when critiquing these photos, always appreciate the advice!
Nice shot comp, i really like the last.
Yeah raz, the 35mm seems like an ideal focal length and that lens does seem really really interesting. It's got me thinking about adding another to the family... just i cant decide if i want the 85mm 1.8G or not seeing that i have the 105... a bit long at times but when doing studio head shots its awesome. So damn detailed and very little distortion. Bah!

I would stick with the 105 since you have it. The 85G is a killer lens though.
That is one seriously adorable little man. =)
I love the look on his face in the second pic. It's like "What? You don't want any of this?"
Ya, he's a good baby and generally happy. My lady is dying to post them to FB, but I told her to wait until we get closer to the day. We are going to do another round this weekend if I can find an stuffed Easter bunny and a couple of props.
