A prime lens should be in every shooter's bag and Nikon just announced a new 40mm DX kit. The f/2.8G lens should be perfect as a walk-around lens and weighs just nine ounces. Sure, it lacks zoom, but you'll live. The lens features a minium focusing distance of just 6.4 inches and a 1:1 reproduction ratio when used with HD video. The lens, being one of Nikon's latest, features Nikon's Silent Wave Motor technology, which will keep the lens nearly silent during operation. Don't want to bother that bumblebee during its closeup, do ya? Expect to see the the new 40mm next month at an MSRP of $279.

I chose Flickr because it's crazy popular and the only place where I can get some decent feedback, even if the people commenting don't even no what they are talking about. Hopefully someone at Flickr will do something about the way the layout is and start innovating.

I'd disagree with that "not good enough" comment. There are quite a few photographers on there that get all kinds of 'affection' and whatnot for their photos- that really aren't that great of photos.

How can I improve waterfall pictures. I mean are there any general rules of thumb for shooting them? I've been there twice and this time there was actually a good amount of water flowing, but I don't like any of the pictures I took. It was crowded as hell too though so I guess I'm not patient enough to get better shots. I had my polarizer on so it would let me leave the shutter open longer. I think I liked Childs Park better because you weren't constrained to the rickety bridges as much.

ice, if you can try to get there on a very cloudy day or even rain thats the best time! These days there are not as many people so this helps as well. You want no sunlight in any of those falls imo. Use your polarizer to reduce any water glare that you can and of course to maintain a longer shutter. You only need about 2-3 seconds of shutter. If its too much, just increase your iso to keep it around those speeds. Too much shutter only makes the waterfalls more white with lesser detail imo.

Childs park is a very nice place to go. I unfortunately took the last snow day off of work just to get some winter fall shots up at childs, only to find out it was closed til' 2012. It takes me about an hour to get up there too

Emmet, as always, amazing photos. i really like the statue photos, the pumpkin head guys, as well as the shots of people in oldey timey garb. awesome.

re your HDR comment from a few pages past .... i don't do much of it either, but sometimes it's fun, and good to keep the option open by taking the multiple shots to use later down the road, but it can be overdone.

No, it's the older model, 300mm if-ed af. Just picked it up off of ebay last week. Damn near new condition, box and all at a good price.
