Disney World is re-opening. Anybody else think this is a bad idea?

"In just a few more days, we’ll begin welcoming the first guests back to the theme parks at Walt Disney World Resort, starting July 11 with Magic Kingdom Park and Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park and followed July 15 by EPCOT and Disney’s Hollywood Studios," wrote Avery Maehrer, Manager of Communications, Walt Disney World Resort. "We’re continuing to prepare for these openings in a measured and deliberate way, implementing health and safety measures with cast members and guests in mind."

I think many businesses are forced with the decision to either re-open (with safety measures in place) or fold.

We had a trip planned since last year to take the kids to Disney in November but we cancelled it last month. Even if cases weren't on the rise down there theme parks just do not sound like a good idea right now. Even if they took crazy precautions and made it safe and sanitary for people, who the hell would want to go and not be able to freely enjoy it like normal? I'm not paying all that money for a restricted experience. The kids can wait another year.

People who are waiting in lines for 6 hours in hot cars are sick. They're not sticking out these long waits just because they feel they might have caught the virus.

There is a lag when it comes to deaths, it's common sense. This is nothing but another temporary Republican talking point to make this seem not as bad as it truly is.

Because that's been their game. Say whatever lies has to be said today. Today is all that matters. We'll worry about what to say when it falls apart tomorrow. RINSE REPEAT.

Someone who is sick and gets confirmed today will be sick for approximately two weeks. At that two week mark either they will begin to get better or for a small percentage, they will get worse.

They will then go to the hospital and be present there for 2-6 weeks until they either get better or expire.

That's it. That's all you need to understand on how these numbers work.

What you're seeing is ALL NEW CASES in these last two weeks. The deaths will follow.

The gap between soaring cases and falling deaths is being weaponized by the right to claim a hollow victory in the face of shameless failure. What’s really going on?

            An article on the subject.

              Ely, beat me to it.

A great article. But here's a graphic from it, for those who don't like to read.

I would add though that the days need to spread wider in this graph. The norm is people being sick at home for two weeks before they go to the hospital, Moore's the pity. They do it because it's expensive and often it's too late.

I think the unfortunate issue is that a virus has enough lag time that people in denial have a lot of ammunition to fuel their illogical thinking. Because it's a few weeks before cases start increasing after reopening, they can claim reopening went well. Then when cases start going up, they can claim its not due to reopening, it's due to young people not distancing (although those two things seem pretty related to me). Then deaths aren't going up yet, so the virus is no longer as lethal.

Anyone looking at the situation honestly would see that this line of reasoning makes no sense, but if you're hell bent on denying it, I guess it works? Of course, it doesn't actually change the reality of what is actually happening.

It's actually pretty laughable that the theme parks are reopening (most besides Disney are already open). I mean, if they're going to reopen during the worst period yet for Florida, then why were they ever closed to begin with? I can sort of understand the theme parks' motives though. They're losing tons of money being closed, and at this point the attempt to control the virus and get things back to normal has clearly failed, so why not join in on the reopening until they get ordered to close again?

I'm really not sure what's going on with Densatis though. He's starting to remind me of...

Maybe he's decided that he's pot committed now, so it's basically too late to turn back and he's just going to stubbornly stick to his guns? The only silver lining I guess is that he's volunteering Florida to serve as the worst case control group that other places can look to for evidence to support taking more drastic actions.

Has anyone else been reading about various scientists saying that covid-19 is at least somewhat airborne?

This would help explain why it's so easily infectious

Also, that you can possibly (but less likely) catch the infection by getting small droplets into your eyes...so if someone coughed near you there's a chance you could get infected even if you're wearing a mask and practice good hand hygiene.

I've seen the clouds of micro droplets that can come from a cough/sneeze and I can tell you that being 6ft away from someone isn't enough and you could still walk through the cloud if someone sneezed into the air a fair distance from you and you later walked into that area

                  Comment

I think we've always known that it's airborne when people cough in enclosed spaces. Typically the aerosol remains for a few hours. But what we don't know is what the chance of infection is if you just walk through that space.

Huh? There is no Republican talking point in anything I said or linked. No one is saying that the deaths aren't going to follow, did you even read the thread I linked to? All it's talking about is that instead of seeing the case counted a week before a death, it's now possible that'll be two due to earlier detection as testing was really limited during the initial surge. That's it. I was agreeing with what you stated in the lag time you were talking about in the post I quoted. So on the animosity towards me. That's cool.

It is definitely airborne. Spread through droplets that are expelled through normal processes of breathing, talking, coughing, and sneezing. Luckily the droplets are pretty heavy so they fall to the ground fast. That's why the social distance rules settled on 6 feet. But, that's if everyone is wearing a mask. If there is no mask a much higher volume escapes and increases the danger. Plus, sneezing or coughing is 100x more dangerous if the person isn't waring a mask when they sneeze or cough. So, yes if you don't wear a mask 6 feet is not enough. Plus if you are indoors where air is recycled it's been shown to travel much larger distances. That's why opening bars and restaurants was just a big mistake. Teachers will be quitting in droves come Sept when the government forces them to sit in a room with 40 super spreaders all day...

Unless you can quarantine yourself away from all human contact, nothing is 100% safe. Even if you take all the precautions recommended some non-masked nimrod can sneeze enough Covid into your eyes to infect you. But, if everyone is mindful, chances would be much lower. No worries man. I understand, it's been bad days all around for a while now. Hope things get better for you.

I just didn't expect to get off work and see that reply when I thought I was agreeing with you this morning and linking to a decent explanation of an aspect of it. Took me by surprise.

A total of 95 hospital ICUs were at least 90% full Thursday, according to the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration. That's nearly half the 207 ICUs that the agency is tracking. At least 45 hospital ICUs were at capacity, and 46 others had only one bed available in the units.

Florida really needs to shut down again right now. Due to the lag time for a shut down to slow the spread, they're in danger of exceeding ICU capacity already even if they act now. If they wait another week or two...

I believe cases were always going to be much higher in the US (even per population) because of the much more frequent worldwide travel in the US vs Canada, prior to really knowing about the virus. Plus, the US has way more areas with higher population density and has a lot more businesses with more focus on getting back to work. Also the weather in most places in the US is better than in Canada so you guys were out of your homes earlier whereas we had a cold spring in many places and people were in their homes much longer

South Korea (527 per km2) has about 15x more people per square kilometre and has just .4% of the cases the U.S (36 per km2) does.

We need to stop making excuses for the fact that the U.S population is one who has been told their freedom is unbound and that they are special and selfish. We need to stop making excuses for a piecemeal "strategy" that left 50 state governments at war with one another for supplies and no national direction to follow. And, when there was some sort of national message, we need to not forget how quickly it was pushed aside and ignored by those who only value profits and money over people.

So my boss tested positive for Covid. I work in the same room as he does, along with 2 other guys. Now I sit about 12 feet from him so not at the same desk, but still. However, my last contact with him was 8 days ago and I'm not showing any signs of infection.

I recognize that it does have a 14 day incubation period, but since Thursday of last week was when I last was in contact with him and it's now 8 days later, if by Thursday of this coming week I show no symptoms then I should be in the clear (unless of course I am asymptomatic). However, I have an A type blood and I've heard A type bloods are the ones that get hit hardest by the virus. I think if I was infected I would be unlikely to be asymptomatic and would probably be feeling something by now. My job though, sent the entire IT team home until the 20th just to be safe, a wise precaution.

What isn't so wise is that IT hasn't been cleared (except for the boss) to work from home. We set up the work from home accounts but we haven't been cleared to work from home (yet). If we don't work from home, only my boss can work from home and he could get overloaded easily come Monday. Corporate logic; "Let's clear people to work from home that have no idea how to use it, but let's not clear the people that fix it and set the process up" .

I would still get tested just to be safe. If you're clear then you probably really have nothing to worry about seeing how it's been 8 days. 12 Feet is a pretty good distance, how is the ventilation in the room and is there lots of talking? People wearing masks while at the office?

I've called 14 different places and either nobody answers the phone, it's a busy signal, or they've already reached their test quota. Even getting an appointment is like winning the lottery. I'm approaching day 9 and still no symptoms. I might just end up waiting it out, but I'm going to try one more time tomorrow.

For a while the testing capacity had increased relative to the case counts and it was not that hard to be tested. But now with the numbers going up getting tested is probably challenging in a lot of places.

Honestly if you're already on day 9 and not symptomatic I'm not sure I'd worry that much about getting tested. You might have to wait hours in line even if you find a place.

In the end even if you do have it, unless you get so sick you need to go the hospital, you pretty much just have to tough it out at home anyway.

HOWEVER I work in a place where we get many season workers from various countries coming in and out for a few months now.

Last few days I felt like I had ZERO power, and today headache, liquid ass, groggyness, runny nose, and my Lungs are feeling kinda like somethings sitting inside them.

I have low level asthma but the timing of it all .

                                                                          Rinse and repeat

Not to get to far into P&R, but it wasn't Trump at all, he once again just took credit for something he had nothing to do with. It was started by Obama in 2014 when he signed the bill that overhauled the VA.. It just takes time for changes to happen.

On the note of testing, my mom was exposed to COVID-19 thru a secretary at a place she went to, she was refused testing, even though she has had allergy like symtoms since about the 4th of july (She was exposed on June 30th), and she is also 74 years old. Pisses me off actually. But she seems to be doing ok.. So we are basically the same place we where in March.. people not being able to be tested when needed.
