In more good news, Fauci today says even when vaccine is widely available we won't get herd immunity because vaccine may only be 70-75% effective and 30% of the population will refuse to get vaccinated.
With government support, three coronavirus vaccines are expected to be studied in large-scale clinical trials in the next three months.
"The best we've ever done is measles, which is 97 to 98 percent effective," said Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. "That would be wonderful if we get there. I don't think we will. I would settle for [a] 70, 75% effective vaccine."
A CNN poll last month found one-third of Americans said they would not try to get vaccinated against Covid, even if the vaccine is widely available and low cost.
In an interview Friday, CNN asked Fauci whether a vaccine with 70% to 75% efficacy taken by only two-thirds of the population would provide herd immunity to the coronavirus.
It doesn't need to. The protected people are 70% immune. People that refuse vaccination will come down with it and either be totally fine or hospitalized... But that was going to happen anyway. If they survive you are closer to herd immunity. If they die, same deal. Heh.

And, infect the 30% who are unlucky enough that the vaccine doesn't work, and kill up to 3% of the entire population, and push fully reopening of the economy out another year,.... Or, people just quit reading **** on Facebook and wake the **** up!!!

Same deal...with a laugh. You really are a callous fck aren’t you.
As to herd immunity, to the current iteration - maybe. Wait until it mutates - and it will mutate.

Basically, you can't stop stupid. If someone wants to cash out their 401k and gamble it in Vegas, they will. I won't feel sorry for them when they lose it all. They bring it upon themselves. Someone thinks drinking bleach will keep them safe? Same deal. Some people are eating tide pods just to impress other idiots on Youtube. At the end of the day it's natural selection at work.
Yes, it will mutate. And it will mutate regardless of your regulations. And it will mutate regardless of your vaccine. Wear a mask. Be careful. It isn't going away. If someone chooses to rush into the waiting arms of Covid there isn't anything you can do to stop it. Pass a law? They'll just ignore the law just like some people will drink and drive or any of a number of other regulations. You're seeing it today.
And, infect the 30% who are unlucky enough that the vaccine doesn't work, and kill up to 30% of the entire population,
So now Covid has 100% death rate? When did that happen?
The vaccine is a jump start on herd immunity. It will need to work IN CONCERT with masks, etc, to slow infection rates. There is no way it's stopping things on its own. Only time will bring the "immunity" (really a slowing of spread) down to a non-scary level, and that happens by infecting people. A vaccine is a "fake" infection designed to keep the symptoms non-existent. Thankfully, many people can get infected and not even notice, or have negligible symptoms. It's going to be a long time before you can open up entirely (no masks, no concerns). Maybe never depending on mutation rates.
If i'm guilty of anything it's pessimism, instead of magical thinking that this just vanishes. Even if we locked down the population 100% for 2 months and wiped it out (which can never happen, but lets stipulate that you could), it takes a single person getting into the country and not being detected to set it all off again because people are still vulnerable. The only armor is herd immunity.. vaccine induced or otherwise.
PHOENIX, Ariz. — In one of the most drastic rollbacks of reopenings yet, Arizona is closing bars, gyms, movie theaters and other businesses for 30 days amid a “brutal” increase in Covid-19 cases, Gov. Doug Ducey said Monday.
Water parks and tubing also must also close, Ducey said at a news conference, and events with more than 50 people are prohibited.
The pullback comes as the state has seen a surge in Covid-19 cases recently. There are now almost 75,000 reported infections, up from 46,689 cases 10 days ago.
“Our expectation is that next week, our numbers will be worse,” Ducey said. “It will take several weeks for the mitigations we are putting in place to take effect.”
The largest increase is from those between the ages of 20 and 44 who now make up 22% of hospitalizations in Arizona, Ducey said.
Sixteen other states have either pulled back on reopenings or have put them on pause as their cases jump. Bars were ordered to close back down in Texas and parts of California. In some of South Florida, beaches were directed to close again during the upcoming holiday weekend, and on-premises alcohol consumption has been suspended in bars statewide.
Just days before the 4th of July weekend, groups of more than 10 people will be prohibited from gathering at outdoor pools in Arizona, including those at apartment complexes and private facilities, Ducey said.
Arizona schools are also ordered to push back the start of the school year to August 17, he said.

US has ‘way too much virus’ to control, warns CDC expert
As state officials across the country grapple to contain a recent surge in cases of the novel coronavirus, at least one expert with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warned the U.S. has “way too much virus” to control at the moment.
Dr. Anne Schuchat, principal deputy director of CDC, made the warning during a Monday interview with The Journal of the American Medical Association, saying that the situation in the U.S. is not like that in other countries, using New Zealand and South Korea as primary examples.
"We're not in the situation of New Zealand or Singapore or Korea where a new case is rapidly identified and all the contacts are traced and people are isolated who are sick and people who are exposed are quarantined and they can keep things under control," Schuchat said in a podcast. "We have way too much virus across the country for that right now, so it's very discouraging."
Indeed, New Zealand on June 8 announced that the last known infected person had recovered, with officials declaring the country virus-free at that time. Since then, a few cases of COVID-19 linked to international travelers have emerged, though officials have been able to contain the infections.
Cases in South Korea have also remained low, with the country reporting fewer than 100 cases per day since April, according to the BBC.
Meanwhile, the U.S. has had more than 2.5 million illnesses and at least 126,141 deaths. States including Arizona, California, Florida and Texas have paused or backtracked their reopening plans as the number of confirmed coronavirus cases has soared.
In Arizona, for example, health officials reported 3,858 more confirmed coronavirus cases Sunday, the most reported in a single day in the state so far, and the seventh time in the past 10 days that daily cases surpassed 3,000.
"This is really the beginning," Schuchat continued. "I think there was a lot of wishful thinking around the country that, 'Hey it's summer. Everything's going to be fine.’ We're over this and we are not even beginning to be over this. There are a lot of worrisome factors about the last week or so.
“What we have in the United States, it’s hard to describe because it’s so many different outbreaks,” Schuchat continued. “There was a wave of incredible acceleration, intense interventions and control measures that have brought things down to a much lower level of circulation in the New York City, Connecticut, New Jersey area. But in much of the rest of the country, there’s still a lot of virus. And in lots of places, there’s more virus circulating than there was.”
Schuchat added that Americans should “expect this virus to continue to circulate.”

Bull crap. The entire European Union had just as many cases and has just many people as the US and they got it under control. All it takes is good leadership. This is another Fox News "it's not my fault the virus is TOO big" excuse making.

This would have happened regardless of who's in control. Governors would still make the same choices, people would still behave the same, protests would still have occurred, etc.

We have a president that refuses to wear a mask, keeps calling the virus a hoax, and was more focused on the economy than lives.
A real leader would have made a massive difference.
But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that you should show forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light.

Not going any further into politics because that's a no win game for anybody and there's plenty of cesspool threads in that other forum, but I'll just say "I dissagree".

You forgot the berating of governors that tried to do the right thing. It's funny how quick people forget all of the insane "Liberate blahblablah" **** he was posting at a daily rate. He actively worked AGAINST doing the right thing.
Sorry to go P&R on this. But, I can't stand by when people post Fox News BS propaganda.

Well, I tested negative. So I'm calling that a good day.
Regarding the above conversation, countries all over the world, especially noteworthy NZ are showing what real leadership looks like in the face of this pandemic.
This would most certainly not have gotten this out of hand no matter who was in charge. Our current orange cockroach in chief is not a leader. Clearly not.
This would have happened regardless of who's in control. Governors would still make the same choices, people would still behave the same, protests would still have occurred, etc.
The fact that so many people believe its a hoax goes hand in hand with the actions of leadership. Trying to hit zero is not the goal. It's trying to hit the smallest percentage possible. Instead, we have a large percentage that believes:
- this a hoax
- this is a New World Order conspiracy headed by Bill Gates to implant microchips in people.
- following BS QAnon conspiracies
- believe they are inoculated by the blood of Jesus
- end times apocalyptic junk
The fact our leadership has continually downplayed this multiple times is problematic. For a while, we were comparable with the EU and Europe as a whole. When we first hit number 1 in positive cases and deaths, I thought it was a bit unfair to say we were the new epicenter based on our size and population than that of individual European countries. The past few months we have far exceeded Europe in this regard. Our infection rate is now at .62% compared to the .20 - .30% of Europe. Dr Fauci says herd immunity in the US is going to be difficult because we have up to 30% of the population who will not get a vaccine in part for the reasons listed above.

Just two days ago the CDC released three new symptoms to watch out for: diarrhea, nausea, and runny nose. GJ staying ahead of the curve, guys. I knew that those were common symptoms two months ago.
The messaging that needs to happen now is the internal damage done to people who have been hospitalized, and the stats of those who have died from other things (heart attack, kidney failure, etc.) very soon after recovering (are you doing okay, Jasef?).
It's all been very, very bad in the US. There are people who still don't know that diabetes is a high-risk condition and still think that face masks are meant to protect you from others (and they know they don't, so they refuse to wear them).
Outdoor gatherings are very low risk for infection spread; indoor gatherings with no ventilation become a cesspool of virus-laden breath. This needs to be blasted from the rooftops.
I know I'm rambling a bit. At least the death rate is still on the decrease, a full two weeks after the start of the increase in new cases. Man I hope that trend continues.

It's inevitable that it will decrease. The sooner the better, but until then we all need to remain vigilant and careful. I wear my mask anytime I step into a random building, even if I'm only there for a minute.

The scene at a bar in NJ this past weekend (with several more just like it), resulting in Gov Murphy delaying opening of restaurants for indoor eating indefinitely. Nice job, self-entitled pricks; because you wanted to have a fun Saturday night, all restaurants in NJ will not see any substantial improvement in their revenue for a while yet. Could have easily been prevented. The shore is going to be a nightmare this holiday weekend.

I hope it continues too, but I've read that the death rate lags the infection rate by about 3-4 weeks. Hopefully treatments out now help mitigate that.
Fauci and other top medical leaders have flagged Texas as a COVID-19 hot spot, but Patrick said the infectious disease doctor has “been wrong every time on every issue.”
“Fauci said today he’s concerned about states like Texas that ‘skipped over’ certain things. He doesn’t know what he’s talking about,” Patrick told Fox News host Laura Ingraham in an interview. “We haven’t skipped over anything. The only thing I’m skipping over is listening to him.”
Patrick also said Fauci has “been wrong every time on every issue,” but did not elaborate on specifics.
Considering Abbott laid out a plan for reopening and then just threw it right out the window, Dan Patrick can f*** right off.
edit: My mom works at one of the big hospitals in Dallas, they just opened a 4th COVID floor, having just opened a 3rd last week.

Fauci is a ass
after repeatedly lying that the general public don't need masks for months just to save them for the healthcare workers
he and his mixed messaging is half the reason people still don't think they need to
he should have told the truth in the beginning and told everyone to make masks and wear them from the start

I think Fauci did not intentionally mislead the public. It was common advice... I have medical personnel who work in my building who were saying masks are so much worse because of the bacteria and other goodies that grow in there (as you yourself found out).
Fauci changed his story. The media eats it up. Snopes even has a segment on it that elevates him for "lying" to the public with the noble intent of saving masks for medical personnel. It's such a crock of ****.

The medical personnel and scientists LET China vacuum them up? Like they had a choice in the matter. Way to deflect blame. What ability do medical personnel and scientists have to deny a nation state the ability to purchase a product?
