Of course wearing a mask in closed spaces is a smart thing to do, but you cannot expect it to protect you. There is no science to back that up. And it definitely won't make the virus die down entirely.Originally posted by dodger View PostYeah that statement is taking it too far. The Dr. does alude just because societies that wear masks more seem to do better, the real reason could be due to something else entirely or in combination with the mask wearing habits, there is just so little research. I'd comment more about mask wearing is just an outward sign of how a society cares for each other which is covering up what is really containing the spread but that's really P&R.
I also take issue with the statement that "there's no science to back that up." I would say there is at least some preliminary evidence that masks help. Obviously, we're operating on limited information and it's too early to say for sure. At the same time there's also nothing that shows definitively that masks don't work. And this one of those situations where wearing a mask isn't going to hurt anyone (unlike something like hydroxychloroquine), so it makes more sense to do it now, rather than wait for rock solid evidence. Worst case scenario, it turns out that it's not effective, and people can stop wearing them.
To be honest, ideally everyone would probably be wearing N95 masks, not cloth masks. Unfortunately, it seems they are not available in large enough quantities. I hope that something is being done to try to increase the supply of N95s, but with the way things are going, I don't know if I should get my hopes up.

I can't believe how many people in my town refuse to wear a mask. The risk is just too great not to, IMO.“The best thing about the future is that it comes one day at a time.” – Abraham Lincoln

In all cases- distance.
What's going to get you for this virus is being indoors for lengths of time.

So... my immediate neighbors have a special needs kid about 10 yrs old who they let out without supervision and he goes to the other kids, being bossy and repeating commands over and over and over while none of them listen. The kids have taken to ignoring him and it's brought him to tears a few times, so we as a community of parents have made it a priority to ensure this kid is getting attention and not being bullied or isolated by training our kids to think about what they're doing and how they would feel, etc. etc.
Yesterday (to make a very long story short) we asked him how his dad was doing; he works 6 days a week and his car hasn't moved in four days. "I'm not supposed to tell you that." "Tell us what?" "Nothing." "Is he sick?" *stare* The kid was also wearing a mask for the first time. His older brother (17) came out later and we asked - he said it was the flu. I pointedly asked, how do you know it isn't COVID. His answer, "If it was that, I think we'd know." He then took the mask off his younger brother's face and went inside.
I'm convinced that dude has COVID and that his kid has been spreading it around to the neighborhood kids - one non-confrontational thing the special needs kid found to interact with the other kids is blowing bubbles while they chase after them to pop them FFS. All those viruses exploding and being breathed in.
When he came outside today, my kids had "two minutes" to get back inside. I don't like that I feel this way, but we're going to be actively avoiding this kid for a long time. A kid who may be fatherless two weeks from now... but my own may have a similar fate three weeks from now. This virus needs to **** off because I hate where my mind goes with this ****.
He's a great guy. I hope he pulls through. I'll cut his lawn and mine tomorrow and hopefully get a chance to extend an offer of hospitality.

4 Houston hospitals are overwhelmed as Texas sets a new record for hospitalizations due to the coronavirus.
Keep in mind hospitals are now doing electives (mentioned in the article) so they're not technically full up of Covid, just elective procedures are using up some beds. Also about 1/3 of Houston economy is medical so we got lots and lots of hospitals down here.

No biggie.
N95 is uncomfortable as hell, but I'd rather be safe.

I am starting to question the point of the "phased reopening". It seems like a lot of places are just going forward with reopening no matter what. Like the numbers start to go up and look questionable, but they just push forward on to the next phase anyway. If you're going to reopen no matter what happens, then why even bother doing phased reopening, why not just reopen 100% right off the bat?

I went to see my Dr this morning for something totally non covid related, but I asked her if she was worried about our trend going up. I was pleasantly surprised by her response. She said the news is mis-reporting some of the numbers, and that our state curve is actually staying pretty flat. While that's not great news by any means, it's better than the huge spike I was worried about.
She agreed that people are starting to think it's over, and that's a dangerous thing right now.
Another misconception I hear all the time is young people will be just fine. Two people between 25-35 died last week in my county from it.

To both points above - Virginia's case rate was on a sharp climb until they let Northern Virginia and Richmond (the two highest concentrations of cases) go to Phase 1. It seemed that going to Phase 1 would be a mistake given the constant rise in cases, but they let it go anyway. Since then, it's been a relatively sharp drop in new cases for almost two weeks.
There is no fathomable explanation for this. Statistics are all over the place and there's no pattern that fits every scenario.

How much common sense just gets looked over.
It's a pandemic.
You go outside and mingle with people without any protection and people will get sick.
Those sick people will exponentially get others sick.
Why would anyone think, that just reopening things would somehow make the virus disappear?
It's nuts.
It's cuckoobananapants nuts.
