Ok you lost me. I'm not sure what paying off the mortgage has to do with this scenario. I fully intend on paying off my house in 28 years, if I live that long, but if I were to lose my job right now and remain unemployed for 3+ months, there's no way I could "catch up" after a 3 month mortgage furlough. I pay off my cars and try to keep my debt to a minimum, but unemployment benefits pay roughly 30% of my salary so I wouldn't be able to make a mortgage payment AND buy groceries & pay utilities. How would you suggest I "catch up" after 3 months of unemployment? And by "catch up" I mean exactly what the bank expects: all deferred payments & interest due now.

By "catch up" I don't mean that... balloon payments the government could mandate against. I was specifically referring to people lamenting having to make it up eventually (the thing about tossing the principle back on the loan, etc.) Basically, calling for forgiveness for those months. (doubt it would pass a constitutional court case anyway.)


In a normal deferment scenario, like you do for college loans (payments suspended, but interest still accrues), an extra $50 a month over the coarse of the loan will make up for it after a few years, and if you keep it going, will shorten your term dramatically due to the magic of compound interest.

Beats having repossession and losing everything by a long shot, and the government can't afford to pay for the country's mortgages too.

i agree on the forgiveness part, the banks can go **** themselves on the interest tho and take one for the team, sure beats mass bankruptcies

Before the lockdowns started I automatically assumed that laws would be put in place that extended loan terms. You have a 30 year mortgage? Well now it's 30 years and 3 months. Same with car loans, student loans, pretty much everything that has a monthly payment.

My mind is blown that the best they could come up with is to send $1200 checks to people, skyrocketing the national debt and doing almost nothing to actually help. Unemployment claims are draining states of funds. It's no wonder that many states are opening back up.
