It's such a stark contrast. In New York Hospitals are at or beyond capacity and yet down where I live hospitals aren't even at 50% capacity (in fact, they recently closed down a 60 million dollar emergency hospital because it never saw a single patient). For once, having a crappy mass transit system seems to have been an advantage (pretty much everybody has to drive to get around here).

I had a friend once upon a time that had this mindset. It was all about cash flow, not net cost. Drove me crazy. She could afford it if the monthly payments were within what she could spend. As a result, she never paid off a car, she just traded one car for another car with a new loan, for example. Same deal with credit cards, etc... the interest lost is ignored, and just whether the minimum monthly payments can be afforded matters.
Ok you lost me. I'm not sure what paying off the mortgage has to do with this scenario. I fully intend on paying off my house in 28 years, if I live that long, but if I were to lose my job right now and remain unemployed for 3+ months, there's no way I could "catch up" after a 3 month mortgage furlough. I pay off my cars and try to keep my debt to a minimum, but unemployment benefits pay roughly 30% of my salary so I wouldn't be able to make a mortgage payment AND buy groceries & pay utilities. How would you suggest I "catch up" after 3 months of unemployment? And by "catch up" I mean exactly what the bank expects: all deferred payments & interest due now.

President Trump has been mocked relentlessly for suggesting that ultraviolet light could be brought “inside the body” to kill the coronavirus, but there is ongoing research to do just that.

If he hadn't used the words "under the skin" in his mentioning of it, it could be so stupid that it might just work.

A tube with a UV light up the nose, another one in the throat. Wouldn't eliminate the virus, but it could mitigate it.

Unfortunately, it will also kill the good bacteria, but that might be preferred to dying.

EDIT: After reading the article, it sounds like I wasn't far off the mark. The more I think about it, the more I feel like there has to be a good reason this hasn't been developed before.

It’s his M.O., he doesn’t “tell” he makes the suggestion and then if things go wrong it’s “not my fault” yet if things go right it’s “ look at what a great job I did” aka the worst kind of leadership.

What point was he trying to make? Please, educate me. I’m hardly what one would consider “stupid” and I can’t figure out why he uttered any of those words during the briefing.

Because the same UV wavelengths that disrupt virus RNA and neutralize them do that to our DNA. Any course of treatment long enough to kill the virus to any degree of certainty will give you a tan, at least (yes even if shoved inside your body), and will increase your risk of skin cancer significantly, since it's the UV exposure that gives you that in the first place.

The quantity of exposure is high enough to achieve any reasonable degree of sterilization in terms of the virus for it to be completely unsafe for generalized use, and the exposure level would have to be even higher if the people treating themselves were wearing clothes, since the UV would have to be strong enough to adequately penetrate the outer layer of clothing where contamination can reside (and that's only if you didn't put your hands in your pockets, for example). UV is already used for sterilization, but given the high dose required and comparatively specialized equipment, a low temperature oven with some humidity removal is a cheaper option that's just as effective.

If there are treatments that use UV, they must be targeted and the dosage must be controlled as it is literally applying ionizing radiation like X-Rays or radiation therapy. A regular throat, nose, or body cleanse with UV, even only if treated daily for a couple weeks (for example) would substantially increase your risk for a variety of cancers, and since internal organs don't have the same pigmentation for protecting against UV, they'd be more susceptible and it wouldn't just be skin cancer.

Something like a blacklight lamp wouldn't be potent enough (too long wavelengths) to be effective as a sterilizer for any kind of short term treatment.

I saw one study of UV treatment where they apply a small amount of UV light to blood (when it's out of the body like dialysis) which kills some healthy cells and some bad ones. Healthy ones apparently regenerated quickly and the bad ones are killed to help the body fight the virus / infection. The amount of light used has to be in a bit of a sweet spot though.

In my area it was mostly the local chains. Paisano's, Mangino's, Big Bite Pizza. Pizza Hut had some good sounding deals but they're gross.

Today, there are no "deals" from any local joint (EDIT: I stand corrected - Paisano's has 50% off all pizza again). I think after this lockdown is done (June 15 for VA, as of now) many of these chains will not exist.

Local pizza joints. Not counting the national chains. We've got a place called Capricios. It's amazing.

UV lights are typically installed as part of the HVAC system in most buildings these days. It does kill viruses and bacteria exposed to the UV light as it passes through the air system. Hospitals use direct UV light to disinfect medical equipment as well.

In Florida new homes being built have them as standard. If you don't have one you can have a HVAC technician install one in your existing AC system.

At the same time people need to avoid the UV kits sold on amazon. Those are generally cheaply made from China, don't last long, and generally arent' strong enough to actually kill anything in a fast moving AC system. You generally have to reach out to an HVAC technician to install a proper UV system in your existing AC.

Personally, all I see this as is taking the liability off of the packaging companies. They're already well known for not taking the best care of their workers so I'm sure they'd be happy to put their otherwise expendable employees back to work.

And am I going to be buying some of this slave labor meat for me and my family - well, I probably will, but ethically, this is something that we're going to have to come to terms with.

And I totally agree that this is going to be a dumpster fire. I do not see this going well.

Australia has been described as “gum stuck to the bottom of China’s shoe,” by a Chinese state media editor as Beijing criticised calls for an inquiry into the coronavirus origin as “political manoeuvring,” further straining ties.

Australia has emerged as one of the most vocal critics of Beijing as it calls for an investigation into the origins and spread of the virus, which emerged in China late last year and has now killed more than 200,000 people around the world.

Late on Monday, Hu Xijin, the editor of the state-run Global Times wrote on Weibo that ties between Australia and its largest trading partner, China, were likely to deteriorate as much as relations between Beijing and Washington had.

Criticising Australia for joining the US in its attacks on China, Hu wrote: “After the epidemic, we need to have more risk awareness when doing business with Australia and also when we send our children to study there.”

“Australia is always there, making trouble. It is a bit like chewing gum stuck on the sole of China’s shoes. Sometimes you have to find a stone to rub it off,” Hu said.

Hu’s comments echo that of China’s ambassador to Australia, Jingye Cheng, who told Australian media at the weekend that pushing for an inquiry could result in a boycott of the country’s goods. “Maybe the ordinary people will say ‘Why should we drink Australian wine? Eat Australian beef?’,” Cheng told the Australian Financial Review.

At a briefing on Monday, a spokesman for China’s ministry of foreign affairs, Geng Shuang, described international calls for an inquiry as destined to fail. Without naming Australia specifically, he said: “Some politicians are trying to make political manoeuvres over the origin to smear other countries, but their unpopular attempts will never succeed.”

Geng added: “The urgent task for all countries is focusing on international cooperation rather than pointing fingers, demanding accountability and other non-constructive approaches.”

The origin of the coronavirus has become an increasingly fraught topic as Beijing fights off accusations it is to blame for the pandemic. China has pushed the idea that the virus, first detected in the central Chinese city of Wuhan, may have originated elsewhere, while the US claims it could have leaked from a Chinese lab. In China, all research into the origins of the virus must go through prior vetting as part of a new policy, according to notices seen by the Guardian.

The Chinese embassy in Canberra has responded to reports about the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade raising the investigation of the source of Covid-19 with the ambassador, releasing a statement claiming DFAT has conceded it has no detail on the proposed investigation.

The statement confirmed ambassador Cheng Jingye took a phone call from Dfat secretary Frances Adamson, but said media reports about what was said were incorrect.

“Secretary Adamson tried her best to defend Australia’s proposal about the independent review, saying the proposal neither has political motive nor targets China. She also admitted it is not the time to commence the review now and Australia has no details of the proposal. She further said that Australia does not want the matter to have any impact on Australia-China relationship.

“Ambassador Cheng elaborated clearly China’s relevant position, stressing that no matter what excuses the Australian side has made, the fact can not be buried that the proposal is a political manoeuvre.

“Ambassador Cheng flatly rejected the concern expressed from the Australian side over his remarks during the recent AFR interview, and called on Australia to put aside ideological bias, stop political games and do more thing to promote the bilateral relations.”

The foreign minister, Marise Payne, on Monday put down “any suggestion that economic coercion is an appropriate response to a call for such an assessment”.

The trade minister, Simon Birmingham, added: “Australia is no more going to change our policy position on a major public health issue because of economic coercion or threats of coercion, than we would change our policy position in matters of national security.”

The prime minister, Scott Morrison, has called on member nations of the World Health Organization to support an independent inquiry into the origins and spread of the coronavirus. He has said his country will push for an international investigation at the WHO assembly on 17 May.

Ouch, China is not happy about the Aussies investigation.
