A pandemic can start anywhere under almost any conditions, and the only reason it's bad for the US is because we were woefully underprepared and our leadership took months too long to realize the significance of the threat, let alone react to it.
A pandemic was always going to happen again, as it's happened dozens of times in history, and the world was mostly inadequately prepared. You can blame specific practices for increasing the risk of animal to human transmission and you can blame the Chinese government for a delayed response and it getting out.... but let's be honest, if this outbreak started in the US, we would have been slower to react and it would have spread to the rest of the world even quicker.
There is absolutely no value in blaming a country for a pandemic. If the rest of the world was actually prepared to deal with it, it wouldn't have even become a pandemic. If it turns out that there is a specific cause that was the result of a specific policy China has (or lacks), then that's valuable information and it would be reasonable to blame them for it if they don't change it and another pandemic from a similar origin rolls in. Aggravated national blame does nothing productive, it just makes it easier for racists and nationalists to get their ****ed up messages into the conversation. The talk of reparations in the tabloids is a similarly nonsensical notion, doing nothing productive and only damaging international relations and deepening cultural and racial divides.
Worth mentioning that if people still want to blame China for the start of this, the rest of the world should be blaming the US for continued problems, shortages, and logistics problems a month from now as we're already the most hard hit numerically and we're a still probably a month out from the peak nationwide.

5 million people left Wuhan before China quarantined the city to contain the coronavirus outbreak
A pandemic can start anywhere under almost any conditions,
Yeah, but it didn't. Their disgusting practice of murdering live animals in the street and eating them in vile conditions facilitated it. And they continue to do it again before this is even over.

We could always encourage China to raise prices on domestic production of goods manufactured and exported. Our prices on pretty much everything will go up. But this would raise the standard of living for a good portion of the nation and ideally jobs would gravitate towards specialized, non-agricultural or agrarian sectors. Which would reduce demand for these sorts of industries and China could start enforcing bans without sentencing a large portion of their population to potentially starve.

Then the US (companies) would just find another slew of poor people and countries to exploit. Will it be South America? Will it be Africa? Who's next
All you can be sure of is that no one will ever thinking about bringing those jobs back to the good ol' US of A. Why should this pandemic teach anyone anything about upping at least *a little* internal production of goods you would be highly dependent on in an emergency...

I agree with all of this. But we only care now about what's been happening in China's wet markets suddenly because it's affecting us directly. When it was convenient to ignore it we couldn't care less. It's a problem. China needs to be forced to shut that **** down. But no one in the US is going to deal with it so long as companies are benefiting from using China as cheap labor and material resources. And those in China's leadership aren't going to do anything about it unless someone forces them to.

So does South Korea. Many Asian countries have eating practices that us westerners find repulsive, yet for them it is culturally acceptable. In fact, it's largely a western ideal that dogs and cats are lovable pets that shouldn't be consumed.
I have no enmity for the Chinese people. It's their government that can suck donkey schlong.

China isn't the only one with that type of wet market, loaded with "foods" we might find disturbing.
Right now (and in recent history) it's China, but could just as easily be S. Korea or the Philippines.
That said, I don't have the answers. I just want us to get through this mess first.
I'll blame them as much as I want to, it's their ****ing fault.
But I'm also staying home because I'm not a dipshit.
So when Canada is managing the virus better than my friends to the south and it puts my country at risk should I blame the USA? No, I shouldn't because in reality the only thing to blame is humanity itself. Sure I despise the CCP for their lack of transparency and utter deceit in this mess, but was that surprising? Not at all, yet all of us still trade and deal with them.
But sure blame them if it makes you feel better but there are also many heroes in the Chinese civilian population -- Chinese doctors, researchers, scientists and journalists risked their lives and many died fighting the virus and warning the world. So rather than say "**** China", say, "**** the Chinese Communist Party". Same goes for me -- Trump is a dangerous moron that is going to get tens of thousands of people killed but that doesn't mean blame the entire country.
Anyways, to each their own. I have spent much time all over China, and have many friends and colleagues there -- the racial abuse they are dealing with right now is not right.

This, except I can't stay home because of my job but when I'm off I don't go anywhere.
Same boat, I'm working now more than I was prior to this.
Also, when I say "**** China" I don't mean every single soul there or the people in general. It's my own blanket term for the CCP I guess, and anyone else who supports or partakes in these wet markets and other horseshit over there.
I guess I should just say **** people, because I really do hate our entire existence anymore. I see fast food places keeping their drive thru open only to have ungrateful assholes throw food in their face because it took too long? Way to band together, morons. These people are risking their lives too so your lazy ass can run out and get food made for you and you bitch about it taking too long? Unreal.
I'm just going to go back to drinking whiskey and talking to my cats.

Across the country, major meat processors are starting to shut down plants as employees are getting infected by coronavirus.
The news is sorta old but we're all trying to limit trips to the store so yeah the frozen Tyson's section was about 60% empty today. Also completely out of eggs. Still it's not the first time I've seen something gone only to return within a week.
But if it starts to getting really bad at these plants are we all going vegan or we robotize the process? Given how many people get injured at these plants you'd figure we'd automated the process by now.

No it wouldn't have. Unlike China we do have strict protocols in place mandated by the CDC on how to report any arising pandemic originating here in the US.
Unlike China who seem to go to great lengths to cover up or delay reporting of an outbreak.
You do know this was not the first time a virus of this magnitude emerged from China?
"Despite taking some action to control it, Chinese government officials did not inform the World Health Organization of the outbreak until February 2003. This lack of openness caused delays in efforts to control the epidemic, resulting in criticism of the People's Republic of China from the international community. China officially apologized for early slowness in dealing with the SARS epidemic.[28]"
How many times is China going to "apologize"?

Sure, if you don't want to acknowledge where the problem arose from in the first place and just want to deflect the blame elsewhere.

This is why the US put together pandemic emergence monitoring teams to identity issues like this early on and take action quickly.

I think that there may be temporary supply chain disruptions, but it looks like they are shutting that plant down for two weeks. If two weeks goes well, those potentially already infected but not showing symptoms should be able to be identified in those two weeks and if only well workers are allowed back to work, it sounds like these will be temporary shutdowns (that will probably rotate around different plants as they are affected at different times).
We've had plenty of meat here, but it seems to go in waves. One week beef is wiped out, the next week it's chicken or pork products. I've seen the same thing with milk and OJ. Some weeks my local stores have a ton, some weeks they don't and you have to shop around. The other thing I've noticed is that one store may be wiped out on one item but another store will have it.
I'm thinking that a lot of what we have been seeing comes down to overbuying from customers (to be prepared and rightfully so) and historical buying trends that limit how much supply different chains can get. If you historically only bought 100 of something a week and now your need 400 of it, likely do most other chains. If the supplier can supply more, they probably try, but if not, they will need to at minimum fulfill the base quota of their current clients before providing more supply.

I suspect it has more to do with population density than anything else. Which is one of the reasons New York is having such high numbers as well. Hard to stop/prevent something when you have millions so close together.

Where does it say we have to reconsider? Why does so many people seem to know more about what "we" do then I?
The high number of infected in Stockholm has a number of explenations, and comparing number when everyone is in a different stage and we are far from out of this is risky or even pointless.

Murdering live animals in the street isn't the issue. Killing an animal to eat, whether it's deep in the wood or on a street market is completely fine.
The issue is open-air animal markets that are storing live animals in close proximity to each other. Like ferrets and chickens.
However, you still need two to tango. Let's say the rumor is true and this virus originated from an undercooked bat. The second part of this dance is the person who ate the bat, must have been suffering from another virus or cold that allowed this BAT ONLY virus to mutate into something that is now transferable between person to person.
So, the guy in Wuhan had a cold that originated, from.... - *closes eyes and throws dart at a world map.
China bears responsibility for the practice of keeping these animals bunched together, and you can bet, now, it's going to be outlawed. But make no mistake, the second you put people in close proximity to animals - LIKE EVERY CHICKEN FARMER, there is always the chance for a virus to jump and co-mingle. This virus could have just as easily infected a U.S. chicken farmer just as easy as a hungry peasant in China.
It isn't a Chinese virus, it's a planet Earth virus.

No it's pretty bad. Biggest failure right now is not being able to keep the virus out of the elderly care homes.
However I still say it's too early for any real conclusions.

It's not about who ate what animal where. It's about how effectively the initial outbreak was (or wasn't) contained by the Wuhan/China government.

Yes, the local health authorities tried to cover it up and they should be punished for it. Once learned what was going on in Wuhan, the Chinese government went full throttle and shut the country down.
Now, why did they try to cover it up? Because of the nature of the government there, the fear keeps people from telling the truth and hoping that it will just go away. Last thing some health professional wants is them being tossed into some prison somewhere left to die.
You know, that same old story, where a leader rules with fear and being surrounded by YES MEN, leads to catastrophe.
Should be rolling out to everyone soon. My sister told me this morning her families payout is in her bank account right now.
I would imagine every one that does direct deposit will get theirs right away. I am on the tail end of eligibility and mine is already showing as a pending transaction in my account. That pretty much goes against all those reports of a tiered rollout starting with lower income levels.
As far as what I will do with it, I will put it in savings and eventually into the house I am currently building.
