    Oh, and:

Florida college students test positive for coronavirus after going on spring break

    BY CAITLIN O'KANE

    MARCH 23, 2020 / 2:37 PM / CBS NEWS

At least five students from the University of Tampa have tested positive for coronavirus after traveling with other students from the school for spring break, the university announced on Twitter. This comes after crowds of spring-breakers in Florida were criticized for ignoring social distancing guidelines and packing beaches in complete disregard of the potential risk.

University of Tampa announced on Friday that it learned that one student, who resides off-campus, tested positive for the virus. Just a day later, the school confirmed that five students, who were part of a larger group traveling together during spring break, had tested positive.

The school moved all of its classes to online instruction on March 17, but some students were still in close contact with each other over spring break and in the school's residential halls, which are still open.

While President Trump announced new recommendations last week to avoid gatherings of more than 10 people, many people across the country are still ignoring that warning. Spring-breakers seen in a viral video posted by CBS News downplayed catching the deadly virus while partying in Miami.

Brady Sluder, one of the young people in the video, said, "whatever happens happens" — showing little concern about the virus.

"If I get corona, I get corona," Sluder said. "At the end of the day, I'm not going to let it stop me from partying. I've been waiting, we've been waiting for Miami spring break for a while. About two months we've had this trip planned, two, three months, and we're just out here to having a good time."

Many Florida beaches have since been shut down. But Sluder and other students in the video earned fierce criticism online — especially because public health officials say it's urgent for Americans to work together to "flatten the curve." The way to do that, experts say, is social distancing and staying home.

"Is it really worth while to do all of this social distancing and hand washing? The answer is yes," CBS News chief medical correspondent Dr. Jon LaPook said on "CBS This Morning" earlier this month. "Normally, right now — without any measures — the epidemic might go up [sharply] and go down. That peak number of cases could overload the system and that's what people are worried about."

The goal of flattening the curve is to prevent a huge spike in cases that overwhelms the ability hospitals to help them all, and to spread out the number of patients out over time. White House coronavirus response coordinator Dr. Deborah Birx said millennials are crucial in flattening the curve.

"We know that we have a large group of millennials between 25 and almost 40. They are really key to this. They're a social group. So that [gatherings of] no more than 10 is very much focused on them to really say, even if you're home, don't have gatherings more than 10," Birx told "CBS Evening News" anchor Norah O'Donnell.

Many millennials and even younger people might be ignoring these social distancing warnings because they think coronavirus won't affect them — but they're wrong. While patients age 60 or older or those with underlying health issues face the highest risk of death from the virus, younger people are also getting seriously ill. Nearly one-third of confirmed cases in the U.S., and 20% of those hospitalized, were between the ages 20 and 44, according to CDC data released last week.

So younger adults actually accounted for a large portion of the hospitalizations. Spring-breakers who did not practice social distancing could have done more damage than they thought.

"This big idea of social distancing, we can't hammer it home enough," CBS News medical contributor Dr. Tara Narula said on "CBS This Morning" last week. "This comes down to something we call the reproduction factor — that's how infectious I am. So if I [hypothetically] have the disease, I can spread it, we think with coronavirus, to three people."

"That reproduction number is affected by the virus properties itself, who is susceptible, but also the duration of contact with individuals and the number of people you contact," Narula said. Decreasing the number of people you contact and the duration can significantly slow down the spread of the virus, she said.

There's so much moron in the world any more. Hope that spring break was a good one, cause some of them are probably never going to have another one like it.

So my work laptop's AV was out of date, and it just wouldn't update via the VPN this past week for some reason, even though I've been full time work from home for over three years now. The VPN finally refused my connection saying the AV had to be updated.

I had no choice but to go to the office to connect, and let it update. Figured I would go in tonight while most everyone was gone. I have never in the 19 years I worked in that building seen it so clean.

I hit all the auto door buttons with my elbow, and managed to touch nothing but my laptop and the seat with my ass. First time I've left the house in a while, and holly hell the roads were clear. That's a great sign though.

Worked with a very pretty girl tonight who admitted she smoked a pack a day for the last 15 years. Told her to switch anything else even vaping as we might have 2-3 months before it hits our relatively isolated area and that might give her lungs some time to recuperate. Didnt want to scare her too much but damn, a gorgeous 30 year old with 2 kids...

Wow. It's a miracle only 19% on that ship got infected. Maybe most people have a natural immunity or something.

If you get it from someone else likely it's from a surface or a single cough etc so the virus amount is there but not much.

Nurses/doctors overall get a much higher virus amount in the initial period (and after) so they tend to get sick quicker, and usually more serious condition.
My mum was a nurse, my dad was a Dr and my sister in law is a nurse, but they didn't/don't get sicker more often or harder than the rest of us. Yes they are exposed more, but they know the precautions to take and are also much better at hygiene.

A successful gorcery store run this morning has alleviated that somewhat.

Virginia Governor ended the school year yesterday. I never seen my kids so happy.

                          Quick family update:

Pretty sure we've been fighting COVID-19 here in the house over the past week.

                          Evan (6) - healed

Gabby (8) - Rare coughing, but still congested - almost recovered.

Yaz (38) - Still repetitive cough, energy mildly drained, however after a week of this, she felt like she took a step back last night. We're calling the county health department today, because, over the course of a week and a half, she's exhibited all the symptoms, including gastro. If she starts to feel that breathing is labored, then I'm taking her in.

The Principle and three teachers are now confirmed at her school with two more symptomatic individuals awaiting results.

Me (44) - Slight sore throat the last two days, but gone this morning after an awesome night of sleep.

I would love if we could get a least one test for Yazmin to confirm if we indeed did contract the virus. That way, I know we're done and we all pulled through ok, which lifts a lot of stress off our shoulders.

Given that she was the Cafeteria manager looking after all the kids, she should get tested.

I'm really sorry to hear your family is dealing with this.

Given that the kids exhibited symptoms, it might be just the flu. I know young people are not completely immune, but it's seemed like they've been pretty relatively unaffected by this latest novel coronavirus. Has your doctor put in a request for a test for Yazmin?

I really hope this is over quick for your family and that you're one of the best-case scenarios.

Actually it is (but not in this cruise case). There's a small percentage of people that are immune to HIV, for example. It is a thing, but immunities are developed from catastrophic events. In this example HIV immunity are due to a white blood cell mutation that is present in a small percentage of people who descended from survivors of the black plague.

We have a "stay home work safe" order, which is basically shelter in place. Buuuuuuuuuuuuuut they left so many ways to get out of it that the order has no teeth. My job is technically not essential but we can twist it in words so that it sounds essential, so I get to keep going to work (actually not mad about this, I would rather work). I would imagine a ton of businesses are going to pull the same trick to stay open.

But with over 400 people in my building (I come into contact with about 100 random a day), not sure this is the wisest course of action but it's out of my hands.

It's not only the elderly who are at high risk, it's killing younger healthcare workers also.

A 48-year-old woman who worked at Donalsonville Hospital in southwestern Georgia tested positive for COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, and died Thursday at a hospital in Tallahassee, Florida.

The same day, a mammogram technician at Piedmont Newnan Hospital was found dead in her Coweta County home. Laboratory tests confirmed the woman had COVID-19, Coweta County Coroner Richard Hawk said.

The woman, 42, had been dead 12 to 16 hours when the police, checking on her welfare, discovered her body, Hawk said. Her child, apparently 4 or 5 years old, was in the home at the time.

A thing to consider is that much of the ship's interior is protected from UV rays and
                                          at stable temperatures.

So if someone coughed droplets on a stainless surface, for example, there is enough
biological material to sustain a longer lifespan.

That said, subways and underground transportation is very much a risk factor.

                                              Horrifying, for sure.

There is a lot of missing information in these numbers, namely did these younger people have any underlying medical conditions that made the impact of COVID-19 worse, and what was the cause of death? Just throwing out numbers of dead by age really doesn't tell us how a normally healthy younger person will be affected by COVID-19. Actual cause of death is lost in all these stats. All we know is that the person had the virus when they died, but not that the virus caused the death.

Some insight into why Italy's woes have been fairly unique thus far.
According to the latest data of the Italian National Health Institute ISS, the average age of the positively-tested deceased in Italy is currently about 81 years. 10% of the deceased are over 90 years old. 90% of the deceased are over 70 years old.

80% of the deceased had suffered from two or more chronic diseases. 50% of the deceased had suffered from three or more chronic diseases. The chronic diseases include in particular cardiovascular problems, diabetes, respiratory problems and cancer.

Less than 1% of the deceased were healthy persons, i.e. persons without pre-existing chronic diseases. Only about 30% of the deceased are women.

The Italian Institute of Health moreover distinguishes between those who died from the coronavirus and those who died with the coronavirus. In many cases it is not yet clear whether the persons died from the virus or from their pre-existing chronic diseases or from a combination of both.

The two Italians deceased under 40 years of age (both 39 years old) were a cancer patient and a diabetes patient with additional complications. In these cases, too, the exact cause of death was not yet clear (i.e. if from the virus or from their pre-existing diseases).

The partial overloading of the hospitals is due to the general rush of patients and the increased number of patients requiring special or intensive care. In particular, the aim is to stabilize respiratory function and, in severe cases, to provide anti-viral therapies.

Could you imagine if even 1% of the population ultimately died from this in the next month or so? That would be well over 10 million people gone within weeks. Not to mention the knock on effects of that from overwhelmed and overcrowded healthcare facilities affecting non-coronavirus related issues from being treated.

Told her to switch anything else even vaping as we might have 2-3 months before it hits our relatively isolated area and that might give her lungs some time to recuperate.
