Wife is freaking out b/c the brother of one of the night shift sergeants at one of the jails I go to tested positive. I haven't been there since 3/12 and never see the night shift anyway, but still....
for those of you (like me) living outside urban/suburban areas.....does it feel like every day, it creeps just a little bit closer to you?
Yeah we very much have the zombie apoceeelips thing going on here We're normally very congested, but traffic is about 15% of what it normally is. It's just an odd feeling in the cities now.
I hit one of the busiest intersections in Cambridge a couple of days ago, mid-day and I was the only vehicle at the light...it was scary lol.
as cool as it looks, that would weird me out seeing it in person

Pretty much, yeah. Upper Peninsula of MI got it's first "presumptive positive" case according to the news. Been watching the map creep north over the past week. Made a run to the store yesterday to get some fresh veg, and looks like I made the right choice for the time being.
Sounds like our Governor is gonna put a Shelter in Place order sometime today. News says she's gonna have a press conference at 11. Wasn't planning on going anywhere anyways, but at least I'm set for a spell.

Family member's close friend has tested positive. She will likely be getting tested soon too.
They've been in close contact with my Mother, who starts chemo Wednesday. We're all part of her support, and we've all been together several times recently.
Yip.. they are ok. But like you say.. loved ones in the line of fire is scary AF!
Also have a bunch of family that's high risk in SA and i am worried as most of them has to depend on government healthcare. I know most countries are not prepared for this but i think SA is in a much worst position than most

Got my fiance out of IL and moved her stuff in before the IL shelter order kicked in over the weekend.
Leave it to Ever's put up a web site here that allows us to report our neighbors if they have to many people in their homes at any given time. I am sure it has all the 'good' people peeking through the curtains every time a car drives by. lol
Glad we are building community spirit and a strong sense that we are in this together. Not setting up pillars of fear and painting others as targets of scorn. Oh wait.

There's always been some chance that one can wind up in bad condition even if normally healthy. It's how your body reacts. Young, fit and healthy people aren't at high risk though. The overwhelming majority of individuals who get the virus wind up with mild symptoms at worse.

You seem to have missed the qualifying 'could' i.e. nobody is panicking, but it should be a wake up call to those people that keep running around telling themselves it will be 100% fine if they get it because they're young.
Every business where I'm at is forced to shut down for the next 3 weeks. I'm going to be pretty board since my PC is torn apart. Oh well, I just hope I get unemployment if this thing drags on for nine months.
Los Angeles School district closed until May 1st at minimum now. Looks like LA is going to be in for the long haul.
Same here in Québec. That means I'm not working... I'm one of the few VERY fortunate one who still gets paid, and it allows me to stay with the kids.
It's like unicorns vomiting chocolate rainbows all over me as I float through a lollipop garden on a magic carpet.

Cannot comment on things here in Georgia w/o it becoming P&R, so let me just say I'm seriously considering moving the "State Line" sign a few miles up the road to the other side of my house

It is a catch 22, we can't stay in our homes for ever but it seems so short a period of time. But looking at other countries 15 days added to what has happened already here in the US means the worst will have already been behind us. If it does not happen that way then they will know more and change their minds.
But if we do not get back to work some day soon there will be no jobs to go back to. No one wants that.

Speaking of which my doctor sent me the you are a high risk person letter for me to give to my employer. Not sure I want to do that other than the fact I need to protect my elderly parents I live with and care for. But I am sure my employer is going to hold this against me. They have already called me out for almost always using up most if not all my sick days every year. Which is of course why the doc sent the letter.

While this is true, 15 days of pain isn't that bad compared to becoming Italy next week. 30 days of pain isn't that bad compared to becoming Italy in 3 weeks.
Countries that have already seen a down tick are now seeing another wave of infections come back (to those who didn't get infected the first time).
This is a wake-up moment for the US.
This bailout that may or may not happen should be structured to do one thing, provide minimum quality of life to everyone so we all can shelter in place for a while. How long is enough? I'll leave that to the public health experts.
However, we do need people who will still be working providing medical care and handling the supply chain and getting resources out to people, but for those who don't need to work, they just need to survive and hunker down and weather this. People need enough to just make it through this and that's what our gov't should be focused. Big business doesn't need bailouts, they need loans, that they pay back. We need to care about the value of all people and focus on that throughout this difficult time.

This is because they're a nurse, and they are in direct contact with infected, if not multiple.
If you get it from someone else likely it's from a surface or a single cough etc so the virus amount is there but not much.
Nurses/doctors overall get a much higher virus amount in the initial period (and after) so they tend to get sick quicker, and usually more serious condition.
15 days is not long enough to relax the lockdown. Right now it's 12 days after lockdown before cases start falling (source: Italy and China). I think you'd need another few weeks on top of that for existing cases to recover and for the health system to buffer itself. So I think one month would be about right. Won't eradicate it but would reduce it heavily.

The problem is there are always going to be idiots that won't comply with a shelter in place order. They don't "see the big deal" and will just go about partying or visiting their buddies and such, all the while dangerously ignorant of the seriousness of the virus.
If EVERYBODY listened and only went to places when absolutely necessary, then this whole virus could be eradicated in short order. Since that is impossible because "people", then the best we can hope for is to slow it down for awhile and ride the wave out.

5 Florida college students test positive for COVID-19 after spring break trip
got to wonder how many of there little " typhoid mary's " have now taken it home to the family and home town
those kind of people lack the capacity or ability to self reflect on the harm they can do.
They'll be all woe is me on social media I'm sick. Some of them will get their parents/grand parents killed and they still won't be able to put 2 and 2 together that their actions are what killed them.

New job just got put on hold because they’re essentially in a hiring freeze due to COVID-19. Motherfker. I’d rather get the virus than stay at this place, but I have a feeling most companies aren’t going to be doing a lot of hiring when everything is shut down.

Yep, bad time to look for a job...unless you want to work for a grocery store or pizza joint.

Im also scared for my parents. They are above 60...
So am I. My parents are both above 70, and both have high blood pressure and other ailments, including past cancer and other health problems.
Me? I'm 46 years old, with high blood pressure and probably the beginnings of heart trouble.
So no matter how I look at it, it's a pretty good chance that if one of the three of us catches this thing, we're looking at our last year on this planet.
