Talked to my local Kentucky House of Representative yesterday. He actually said schools will be closed for 18months. 18 months! I find that very hard to believe WTF!

Any Germans here who can explain the numbers?

Daily and weekly updated statistics tracking the number of COVID-19 cases, recovered, and deaths. Historical data with cumulative charts, graphs, and updates.

Is it true Germans are misreporting deaths by NOT including in the statistic those who died but were also diagnosed with some of the underlying health contitions?

            I'm not German, but...

            https://www.euronews.com/2020/03/13/coronavirus-why-does-germany-have-so-few-covid-19-deaths

At a press conference last Wednesday, Prof. Dr. Lothar H. Wieler, President of the Robert Koch Institute in Berlin said...

Wieler also explained that this is just the beginning for Germany. "If you imagine an epidemic like a curve [...] then there are countries that are simply further" into the progression of this epidemic.

He expects the case numbers and the numbers of deaths to rise, just like they have in other affected countries.

Day 3 of lockdown here in Peru.

We can go out to get groceries but can't use our cars, just walking. Luckily I have a supermarket 6 blocks from home.

Finland's in a softish lockdown and operating on emergency preparedness legislation that overrides the constitution. Meetings of more than 10 are prohibited, schools and most other public facilities have been closed, people older than 70 have been ordered to stay in, and everyone else should cut contacts to a minimum. Most gyms etc. have cosed down voluntarily. So far, slightly over 300 cases have been diagnosed and no deaths.

I work for a governmental emergency preparedness authority, and only 10 % of our people work at the offices. All others have been ordered to work indefinitely from home to keep the essential duties as safe as possible. This might take a while.
So long, and thanks for all the fish.

So my in-laws are Christian Scientists (don't go to doctors, don't believe in germs), and it sounds like they're still holding normal Sunday & Wednesday church services... Their city has limited gatherings to 25, and their congregation is probably smaller than that anyway. The average age in their congregation has gotta be 75+.

If people drive they are more likely to spread the virus further. So yes, in a sense cars can worsen the spread of the virus.

Looks like young people aren't as safe from this as earlier data suggested.

The deadly coronavirus has been met with a bit of a shrug among some in the under-50 set in the United States. Even as public health officials repeatedly urged social distancing, the young and hip spilled out of bars on Bourbon Street in New Orleans. They gleefully hopped on flights, tweeting about the rock-bottom airfares. And they gathered in packs on beaches.

Their attitudes were based in part on early data from China, which suggested covid-19 might seriously sicken or kill the elderly — but spare the young.

Stark new data from the United States and Europe suggests otherwise.

A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention analysis of U.S. cases from Feb. 12 to March 16 released Wednesday shows 38 percent of those sick enough to be hospitalized were younger than 55.

Earlier this week, French health ministry official Jérome Salomon said half of the 300 to 400 coronavirus patients treated in intensive care units in Paris were younger than 65, and, according to numbers presented at a seminar of intensive care specialists, half the ICU patients in the Netherlands were younger than 50.

                                  ...

She called out younger generations in particular, for not taking the virus seriously, and warned of “disproportional number of infections among that group.”

President Trump reinforced her warning, saying: “We don’t want them gathering, and I see they do gather, including on beaches and in restaurants, young people. They don’t realize, and they’re feeling invincible.”

The CDC report looked at 4,226 covid-19 cases, with much of the data coming from the outbreaks among older adults in assisted living facilities. As in China, the highest percentage of severe outcomes were among the elderly. About 80 percent of people who died were older than 65.

I wonder how many of this are younger people ignoring the warnings and recommendations for social distancing (I saw videos of people treating Spring Break as business as usual), versus younger people simply being forced into going to work due to the nature of their jobs not really offering any work-from-home opportunities.

The BBC Outside Source program did a piece on this last night. So far the UK Govt has just told people not to go out to pubs etc... It has cut down on numbers, but they interviewed a group of university students. Basically their attitude was it doesn't really harm us. When it was pointed out they could spread it to older people, they just said they'd isolate when they got symptoms.

They also showed a St Patrick's day celebration in a bar, the place was rammed.

I have a big one 3 minutes walk from home, but they are super expensive.

Went to Costco yesterday, they started to limit the # of customers inside. There was a line of about 60-70 cart in front of me, took about 15 minutes to get in. Was about time as I got the runs right in the middle...

Store was mostly ok, missing TP, rice and ground beef but that was almost all. Went to my local grocery store and they weren't missing much... Yogurt and eggs were out but I bought some at Costco anyway.

Perhaps the best damned news I've heard in a good long time. If it checks out (might be correlative factors in less travel, not having anything to do with the drugs themselves), then it's readily available drugs that can be given as a preventative measure without needing to wait on a vaccine. Still a ridiculous AMOUNT of those drugs needed, but it's a way forward. It dovetails with actual studies indicating efficacy of chloroquinine.

WOW. On the subject of using antimalarial drugs for COVID-19 treatment, I've compared COVID-19 cases versus malaria incidence by country.... This is...

On the subject of using antimalarial drugs for COVID-19 treatment, I’ve compared COVID-19 cases versus malaria incidence by country….

This is amazing. I downloaded all of the data for 234 countries, incidence of total COVID-19 cases (as of 3/17/2020) versus the incidence of malaria in those countries (various sources, kinda messy matching everything up in Excel).

RESULTS, Multi-country average malaria cases per thousand, COVID-19 cases per million, in three classes of countries based on malaria incidence:
                                              Top 40 Malaria countries: 212 malaria = 0.2 COVID-19;
                                              Next 40 Malaria countries: 7.3 malaria = 10.1 COVID-19
                                              Remaining (81-234) countries: 0.00 malaria = 68.7 COVID-19

Again, the units are Malaria cases per thousand “population at risk”, and COVID-19 cases per million total population.

In all my years of data analysis I have never seen such a stark and strong relationship: Countries with malaria basically have no COVID-19 cases (at least not yet).

We looked at the worldwide distribution of malaria and of the COVID-19 infection. Maps below (Fig. 1) offer the tantalising suggestion of a geographical separation, with countries affected by malaria mostly being clear of COVID-19 (blue=death rate of more than 0.1 malaria deaths per million inhabitants), and vice-versa countries that have suffered COVID-19 mostly being also where malaria is not active (orange=death rate of more than 0.1 COVID-19 deaths per million inhabitants).

Quinine is in tonic water... I think you know what you need to do... (edit: Yes, this is a joke.. I know that quinine isn't necessarily the same benefit as the other anti-malarials being tested.)

This is...

Be careful with Quinine...it has been known to be ototoxic and can cause tinnitus (never ending ringing in the ears). I had it once for a month, some people have it for life. It's basically your own personal torture chamber that you can never escape from and you will never have silence again in your life.

I would speak with your Dr. before going quinine crazy.

According to the schedule, the parks should be open by then, also the 8 week CDC recommendation to not hold meetings of over 50 people expire the week before, it's a tight schedule.

Could diarrhea and other gastrointestinal issues be the first signs of the novel coronavirus, also known as COVID-19? Yes, at least according to one study published Thursday in The American Journal of Gastroenterology.

The study, conducted by Chinese researchers, looked at data from 204 coronavirus patients in China’s Hubei province, the epicenter of the outbreak. Of the 204 patients, 99 of them -- about 48.5 percent -- presented to the hospital with “with one or more digestive symptoms as their chief complaint,” namely diarrhea, vomiting or abdominal pain, per the study.

“Of these 99 patients, 92 developed respiratory symptoms along with digestive symptoms, and 7 presented with only digestive symptoms in the absence of respiratory symptoms. Among the 105 patients without digestive symptoms, 85 presented only with respiratory symptoms, and 20 neither had respiratory nor digestive symptoms as their chief complaint,” the authors wrote.

Not only could digestive issues be the first sign of illness, but the patients who reported them became more seriously ill than those who did not.

“Moreover, as the severity of the disease increased, digestive symptoms become more pronounced. Patients without digestive symptoms were more likely to be cured and discharged at the time of this study than patients with digestive symptoms,” the authors wrote, noting 60 percent of patients without digestive symptoms subsequently recovered and were discharged, compared to roughly 34 percent of those with digestive symptoms.

The researchers concluded that their findings call for more research that evaluates “the prevalence, incidence, predictors, and outcomes of digestive symptoms in this still-emerging pandemic.”

“In the meantime, clinicians must bear in mind that digestive symptoms, such as diarrhea, may be a presenting feature of COVID-19 that arise before respiratory symptoms, and on rare occasions are the only presenting symptom of COVID-19. Clinicians should raise their index of suspicion when at-risk patients, such as those exposed to COVID-19, present with fever and digestive symptoms, even in the absence of respiratory symptoms,” the study's authors wrote. “This knowledge may help with earlier identification of COVID-19, faster time to treatment, earlier quarantine, and lower exposure to bystanders.”

The findings come after scientists from the Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University and the Wuhan Institute of Virology of the Chinese Academy of Science in February discovered the novel virus may transmit through the digestive tract, specifically the fecal-oral route, in addition to respiratory droplets.

More specifically, those researchers found “virus genetic material” in stool samples and rectal swabs from some patients.

Could diarrhea and other gastrointestinal issues be the first signs of the novel coronavirus, also known as COVID-19?

All delivery services have collapsed, the next available delivery date is in 2 weeks.

I will go out tomorrow to get some fruits and vegetables.

The car restrictions seems unreasonable. Between that and the delivery delays, how are the elderly going to get their essentials?

My main concern right now is to get vegetables and fruits, I have a lot of snacks and softdrinks (too much really).

I will be travelling to Florida on May 8th for my yearly Disney trip and I'm taking my grandmother with me, may need to rethink that...

We were all told to work from home starting this week which seemed a little premature at first. Now not so much. I was planning on going in to the office this weekend to use some equipment but that's not happening now. It definitely feels like things are changing more rapidly every day
