Everyone coming into Canada is supposed to quarantine for 14 days, regardless of where you came from. This was mandated awhile ago.

Its a recommendation so its not enforced. But eveyrone smart enough to realize the seriousness of COVID19 wouldnt defy that recommendation.

Just ran the numbers and the current mortality rate for the official count of infected is 3.9%! That is VERY, VERY high.

3.9% against the "known" cases I think for every diagnoses case there are another 15+ that are not.

Exactly how deadly COVID-19 is remains up in the air. Limited testing and undetected cases — people with no symptoms or ones so mild they don’t seek medical attention — make it hard to pin down how many are infected. And that number is crucial for calculating the ratio of people who may die from COVID-19.

Enter the Diamond Princess cruise ship. Quarantined at sea off Japan after a passenger tested positive for SARS-CoV-2, the ship became a natural data lab where nearly everyone was tested and few cases of infection were missed.

Infections and deaths onboard suggest that the disease’s true fatality ratio in China is about 0.5 percent, though that number may vary from place to place, researchers report March 9 in a paper posted at MedRxiv.org.

That 0.5 percent is far less than the 3.4 percent of confirmed cases that end in death cited by the World Health Organization, but troubling nonetheless. The WHO’s number has come under fire because the true number of people infected with the virus worldwide is not known.

Well the lockdown has really gotten underway here in the Bay area. Everything is closed now, except grocery stores and a few other things. Apparently you can now be arrested for non-essential traveling, although I doubt that will be enforced.

                Agreed.

Doesn't the CDC page about the virus even say exactly what to do and not to contact medical help unless you have trouble breathing or other major issues? There's probably tons of people not showing much in symptoms or just not bad enough to go in and riding it out at home. They aren't even counted at all.

The cruise ship is an odd sample though. It certainly includes alot of retirement age people who might be at risk, but includes zero people who are too unhealthy to travel... No nursing-home kinds of people, which will probably account for a large percentage of deaths.

I manage a grocery store. It's stupid how people buy. The supply chain is fine and we receive our trucks (for the most part) normally. Unfortunately, a normal load cannot support the panic buying.

Most people are very nice, state how happy they are that we are open ect...

Well, think of it like this... the people are wanting to buy enough so that they don't have to go into your potentially covid-infested store again for another couple of months. It doesn't have to be "panic" to make them want a lot of goods.

That said, all it takes is a single government order to make it impossible to go to the store at all... in that respect, I can't say I blame them.

The panic buying is really self-reinforcing. People that are relatively calm see that toilet paper (and other stuff) is out of stock all the time. So they make it their mission to buy it whenever it is available because they can't be sure it will be there when they try again.

But also people are stocking up for 2-4 weeks of food so they don't have to go as often, which is smart. So many people doing this all at once is bound to create supply issues. I started buying a few extra things a few weeks before it got crazy down here.

It also is mostly people who are retired, especially that time of year (kids grown, out of school, etc) so the average age of everyone on the ship(s) is probably pretty high.

The lack of real data on this is frustrating AF.

Illinois just had it's first death. 22 confirmed cases in a nursing home in DuPage county (my county) 18 residents 4 workers. Day 1 of the test roll out look for a fairly rapid spike in Chicagoland area in the days ahead.

All the other side of that argument, how many other deaths have happened, that because they where never tested are not being tied to the coronavirus when on fact that was the cause or significant factor, and put under heart attack, or what have you?

We had something like 4900 cases this morning, we are at 6400 cases tonight and over a 100 deaths. Big jump in just one day errr 12 hours..

Have a friend who I haven't seen for a while. Him and his family rarely get sick. All 3 of them became sick a few days ago. They went to the doctor today.. supposably all 3 have upper respiratory infections all getting it at the same time? Where they tested for the coronavirus.. nope.. told they can all go back to work tomorrow unless they get a fever.

Basically the virus hit the wrong demo in SK and the right demo in Italy. Oh and all that testing helped. Oh only less than 5% of women smoke in SK where the smokers are more even between the sexes in Italy, there's a lot in the article to unpack so have at it.

Agreed, considering China covered this up, and all the global travel. This has been around for longer than people think. Most folks prob just think it's a bad cold, and aren't diagnosed.

Def Taiwan was proactive and got out in front with testing and quarantine of those sick whereas both US and Canada are about 6-8 weeks behind Taiwans efforts so now mitigation will have to follow a different probably more draconian route.

We found out NB here has about 400 respirators for the entire province and the company that sells them says they are still waiting for orders. NS next door ordered an extra 140. To about 600 but still way too little for what is expected.

The Governor has declared a statewide state of emergency. I would think the Courts/Government would issue a mandatory order of quarantine under these circumstances. Hell idiots like that will kill untold numbers of high risk people.

They already got screwed out of a nice vacation there back in the fall of 2018 due to hurricane evacuations. They got down there and basically had to leave the next day.
