These quarantines are a stalling tactic, nothing more. It's to keep the number of sick people at a time to manageable levels... but eventually everyone is going to get it (and probably multiple times over the years as it continues to mutate.)

I could be wrong, but that's the way it's looking to me, barring an amazingly awesome vaccine that works against this one and any mutant variants (which probably won't be available for another year anyway.)
Good points. My counter would be that if you wait long enough in quarantine, nobody should be sick with the virus and no surfaces will have the virus. How long that is varies. Surfaces should be clear after a few weeks. The human component is the biggest issue. But say if during a lockdown, five people get sick one after another ((14+5) x 5 = 95) then 3 months of lockdown should be enough to eradicate 99.9% of it. Some people would be immune too, creating a slight advantage for the next wave.

After this, we should have enough tests to randomly screen the population. If countries keep this random screening up for months (or years) then you can keep on top of any future outbreaks. Ideally you'd have enough tests to screen the entire population, but that's probably not practical.

I think the biggest threat to China right now is people from other countries, not within. So they'll have to screen travelers for months. I am curious to see what happens in China after they start to relax the quarantine.

              Everything is ****ed.

I used to love March. My Dad's side is Irish, my Grandmother emigrated from Ireland and my dad has been big on it for forever. Lots of great memories, lots of trips to a lot of parades.

Now, its world war ****ing C. Goddamn it all. My GF is quarantined from me for two weeks, living with sisters for a bit, my bro and my nephews are in lock down after one last visit on Sat, friends either dying from overwork or totally sealed in. I don't work at a place where WFH is reasonable and my position is hands on. Shower every night right as I come in the door, clothes constantly cleaned, avoiding all stores... This all sucks.

And I've got it ****ing made, I'm in my early 30s, with zero health anything, I've still got a job, my family is being smart for the most part...

              Brutal times peeps.

Here in NJ, Governor Murphy told residents they should not leave their homes between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. unless it is an emergency or essential travel.
                Not a mandatory curfew, yet.
Bars closed, gyms closed, restaurants only allowed to do take out or delivery. No gatherings over 50 people.

                  Hello fellow NJ liver.

I have a feeling that it may become mandatory soon.

I don't live in the most crowded area of NJ anymore but damn I'd much rather be hanging out in northern central PA atm. Just so many people and my luck skill points only take me so far.....

I usually get take out for lunch but decided it would be best to eat canned food at work for the time being. I went to the grocery store and there was a dude with a yellow hazmat suit on. The one piece kind with the air tank on his back. Dude had two carts stacked 7 feet high in the air. Everybody was just looking at him like WTF. The grocery store is now cleared out like everywhere else. It took a little longer for the panic buying to hit my area but it's in full effect now.

My place of employment is staying open for the time being.

Yuck, mine's haven't but when it does it will suck. Yeah I always hate going but am always relaxed afterwards and glad I went especially now that everything is tense now (I even keep the TV attached to the treadmill off these days).

Edit: Just got the email, closed til at least April 1, we must go to the same chain.

They cut transit back in Edmonton to reduced Saturday schedule. Problem is now the buses are packed.... You have roughly thr same amount of people using a slower reduced bus service crammed in to a confined space.

LAst i heard transit in Calgary was mandated to only take enough passengers equal to the amount of seats....

I have no idea how they enforce that.

I guess the otherside is that things are slowly locking down here and the amount of people travelling isnt nearly as much. I drove past the trains and they dont look full at all.

Company using Theranos patents sues in court to block U.S. companies from producing coronavirus testing kits due to intellectual property infringement rights assertions.

Back in 2018, the disgraced biotech company Theranos sold its patent portfolio to Fortress Investment Group, a division of Softbank. Now two of those patents have wound up in the hands of a little-known firm called Labrador Diagnostics—and Labrador is suing a French company called BioFire Diagnostics that makes medical testing equipment.

And not just any medical testing equipment: BioFire recently announced it had developed three tests for COVID-19 using its hardware—tests that are due out later this month. But Labrador is asking a Delaware federal court to block the company from using its technology—presumably including the new coronavirus tests.

                                                ...

While Theranos never got a machine like this working, BioFire did. BioFire's product line includes the Biofire Filmarray, a machine that automates detection of a variety of pathogens. Biofire says that it has added the new coronavirus to the slate of pathogens its devices can detect, and it expects to make this capability available to customers later this month.

But Labrador Diagnostics argues that the FilmArray infringes on two of its Theranos patents. And as is common practice in this kind of lawsuit, Labrador isn't just asking for royalties. It's also asking the court to issue an injunction against further infringement of its patents. That would apparently mean shutting down sales or use of the Biofire Filmarray product line—including its forthcoming coronavirus tests.

The virus is going to hit us all in one way or another no matter what we do. It's here to stay, just like the other coronavirus strains.
It's not a matter of whether shutting everything down will prevent the spread - as you noted it will infect a large portion of the population regardless - instead shutting things down is about slowing the the exponential rise of infection so that so many don't get sick all at once and overwhelm our healthcare system - which would have a much bigger economic impact if that happened.

Shutting things down like this and social distancing will draw the infection rate out longer over time and help the hospitals and workers and medical supplies. Everyone will still probably get sick, but instead of it all happening in a month it will happen over many months now and give the healthcare system a fighting chance.

It's worth mentioning that we're not just slowing this down to protect the elderly or immune compromised; though this should be reason enough on its own. But this overwhelming of our healthcare system is getting healthcare workers killed also. The constant exposure to this is unfortunately causing some healthy and young healthcare workers to die from this.

By closing down too many aspects of life it may make people too scared to come out of hiding. Depending on the good or service we have a couple months at best to 'shut everything down' and try to smooth that virus curve but if people dont come back to work soon we'll be looking at supply chain curves a lot more. And they will hurt us a lot more as well. Its easy to go from oblivious partyers to scared survivalists.
