There was canned food, pasta, etc. Which I bought some of just in case. TONS of meat, which I'll be freezing since I meal prep chicken meals for work every day (only now I have no veggies to go with it).

Bottled water was nearly 100% gone too, of every single type. I don't get that either. Why is everybody buying bottled water? There should be plenty for the people that actually need it like me that have shitty well water and not on the city lines. I rarely see anyone leaving the store with it normally (I buy a case every week), and now it's wiped out. Do people think they won't have running water now? This **** isn't making any sense.
pasta that was gone here wasn't a noodle in the first store i went to
    tons of sauce no noodles

i had to ask for 85% hamburger it was going as fast as the put it out

maybe because i went Friday morning before the rush of people that just got paid

i mostly go Wednesday morning when most are at work but self employed like me or retired
    or lots of others wife's

i got the last bottled water and someone tried to take it out of my cart after i scanned it then called me a ass for not letting her have it

got 2 more 1000 round cases each of 7.62 nato 5.56 nato Saturday

but don't know about CWD and the dear and elk here been 25 years since i hunted
and if it is not in session you can't get it tested

‘There Is Plenty of Food in the Country’
The aisles and aisles of empty store shelves give the appearance that the United States, improbably and alarmingly, is running out of food.

But the nation’s biggest retailers, dairy farmers and meat producers say that isn’t so. The food supply chain, they say, remains intact and has been ramping up to meet the unprecedented stockpiling brought on by the coronavirus pandemic.

Even so, shoppers can most likely expect to see empty shelves intermittently, as the nation’s network of food producers, distributors and retailers are stretched as never before. Industries that are calibrated to supply consumers with just enough of what they need on a given day cannot keep up with a nationwide surge of relentless shopping fueled in large part by fear.

Food suppliers and retailers are now not only struggling to satiate crushing demand for canned soup and oat milk, they are battling a perception that the scary scenes at the grocery store reflect a fundamental breakdown.

“There is food being produced. There is food in warehouses,” said Julie Anna Potts, chief executive of the North American Meat Institute, a trade group for beef, pork and turkey packers and producers. “There is plenty of food in the country.”

“Our stores are getting stocked every day,” Ron Vachris, chief operating officer of Costco, said in an interview on Saturday. “Transportation is functioning, our suppliers are working around the clock and the flow of goods is strong.”

this crap will only go on for two to three weeks before most of these nuts can't afford to keep buying out the stores

I know this, because that's what happened when I stupidly went grocry shopping yesterday.

Gas has yet to go down here. Same price it was a month ago (maybe 2 cents cheaper). But that is normal around here. Oil prices drop, takes 3 months to see gas prices go down, oil prices go up, gas prices go up the next day.

If you wait till you're right then it's too late.

Politicians, need to drop the hammer on this and shut everything down except grocery, gas, and pharmacy.

                                  That's it.

I was actually having this conversation with a colleague last week. From what i understand there are different strains already so sounds like the same a flu which means it won't be cured. So how long is it going to take for us to build immunity to it? Does that mean the average life expectancy will go down? And with that, healthcare cost sky rocket?

Most people don't go to the hospital when they get the flu. Assuming we average out at a similar level, won't change much in the big picture.

The question as I see it is how much pain (physical and financial) we go through before we get there.

I'm not really sure that the economic impact is going to be worth it at this point. It feels like containment is a pipe dream. The point out is slow the spread enough that it doesn't hit all at once and overwhelm our ICUs and hospitals.

I appreciate that some of the infection models are high in an effort for people to take this seriously. Many are free for all models where nothing is shut. But I think it's defeatist to say that 50-80% will be infected. China is the obvious example where that is just not true, but it's hard to rely on their data. South Korea seems to have really locked it down with rapid testing.

If countries have more than 5% infection (including hidden cases) then they're doing something wrong. Italy is in a bad way right now, but they still only have a fraction infected (1% if we 20x confirmed). Their lockdown should come into play in a few days and it might be another week before they start to recover. If we say they're at the peak of infection, I would put them at 3% infected maximum total (not including second a wave but including hidden cases).

What I'm saying is that when infected numbers hit a serious point (0.5% at most) the whole country will just close everything and FORCE people to stay home for a few weeks. That alone will drastically reduce infection rates as it seems to have in other countries.

                                                                      Comment

But in the "oops" department.....the announcment further said that they would not be available the week of the scheduled spring break, April 6-10. I guess they forgot to take that part out since they are officially still going with the "all will be well in two weeks" narrative.

I think you're neglecting the idea that eventually you have to come OUT of quarantine. While China may have capped things under extreme lockdown, once people start moving around again it's likely to come back. I think it's too much to hope for that it eradicates 100% of the virus in the country, and it will be back to infect anyone that didn't get it the first time around.

These quarantines are a stalling tactic, nothing more. It's to keep the number of sick people at a time to manageable levels... but eventually everyone is going to get it (and probably multiple times over the years as it continues to mutate.)

I could be wrong, but that's the way it's looking to me, barring an amazingly awesome vaccine that works against this one and any mutant variants (which probably won't be available for another year anyway.)

Here in the U.S. we have folks complaining about how they have to stay home for a few weeks and stop hanging out with others in public.

Meanwhile in Italy, they're trying to figure out how to start deciding who lives and who dies once their healthcare systems become overwhelmed by those needing hospital stays and ICU support.

The unit has drawn up a protocol, seen by The Telegraph, that will determine which patients receive treatment in intensive care and which do not if there are insufficient spaces. Intensive care capacity is running short in Italy as the coronavirus continues to spread.

The document, produced by the civil protection deparment of the Piedmont region, one of those hardest hit, says: "The criteria for access to intensive therapy in cases of emergency must include age of less than 80 or a score on the Charlson comorbidity Index [which indicates how many other medical conditions the patient has] of less than 5."

The ability of the patient to recover from resuscitation will also be considered.

One doctor said: "[Who lives and who dies] is decided by age and by the [patient's] health conditions. This is how it is in a war."

The document says: "The growth of the current epidemic makes it likely that a point of imbalance between the clinical needs of patients with COVID-19 and the effective availability of intensive resources will be reached.

"Should it become impossible to provide all patients with intensive care services, it will be necessary to apply criteria for access to intensive treatment, which depends on the limited resources available."

It adds: "The criteria set out guidelines if the situation becomes of such an exceptional nature as to make the therapeutic choices on the individual case dependent on the availability of resources, forcing [hospitals] to focus on those cases in which the cost/benefit ratio is more favorable for clinical treatment."

Truly crazy times. Somewhere in here there's a balance point, but for now kinda in a better safe than sorry mode.

Speaking of which, my parents are stuck in New Guinea. They left last Wednesday to for a health clinic outreach trip, which was cancelled a day later. Was hoping they'd bow out ahead of time, but that's my parents. Current return flight path is through Australia, so does that mean a month of quarantine (2wks Australia, 2wks USA)?

Similarly, my oldest son was scheduled to go on a trip to Belize this week, but that was fortunately cancelled before they embarked.

Still at work. Small group here, and we've instituted a closed door policy, increased hygiene awareness, and setting up remote work for those who's work accommodates it.

                                                                              Hope you're all well.
