Between your age and your prior heart problems, it sounds as though you fall into the high-risk category. Your parents definitely do. The three of you have my best wishes.

It is good that you are not in a panic, but try to keep a healthy level of concern about this. Wash your hands regularly when you can, use hand sanitizer when you can't, and don't touch your face. You probably know all of this already, but I wanted to say it anyway.

I love nitrile gloves. I use them constantly for household cleaning (it keeps the cleaning chemicals off your skin in addition to the filth), handling raw meat, taking out the garbage, and other germy or dirty jobs.

It seems that you are healthy. That is really good.

Order the coffee because you're not going to get coronavirus from opening a package.

I'm in full battle rattle working on airplanes in 95degree weather. Coronavirus and a 2 week quarantine would be a ****ing blessing at this point.

Have you checked the companies website to see if / when they'll start shipping product again?

I know Italy is on lockdown, but hopefully some trade is still going on.

Well WHO declared it a pandemic, which is good in that hopefully more people take is seriously. Should have probably done it a week ago but it's done.

Italy is kinda a litmus test for the rest of the world imo. And they're not doing too well

2,313 new cases and 196 new deaths. (12,462 and 827 total)

That looks like a 6% mortality rate. Am I reading that right? Even if we assume there are a lot of undiagnosed cases out there due to limited testing, that's still a number that's pretty uncomfortable to look at.

I went to the doctor today and tested positive for influenza A. I was unable to get a coronavirus test since I am considered to be a low-risk patient, and there is a shortage of tests.

Yeah it is, they have one of the highest. Italy has an aging population, which I believe is the main reason for the problem. But Japan has an old population and they somehow don't have it as bad. Some people mentioned that Italian people are quite affectionate to each other (kissing etc), so that could be another factor. I think Italy is just getting overwhelmed atm which is putting too much pressure on their health care.

Since Italy has been in lockdown, hopefully we'll see a reduction in new cases in about 5 days.

If I understand correctly, the virus has a higher mortality rate for older people who smoke or have compromised immune system. Not sure what the stats are in Japan, but I read that 65% of the men in China smoke. Italy has a lot of smokers as well. I suspect that plays a large roll in these mortality numbers.

And there it is. As I stated a few pages back - don't expect to get tested unless you're in dire straights.

At least you know that it's most likely just the flu (strange times, eh, when you're happy to just have the flu?).

However, being that there isn't a specific treatment for coronavirus, we're eventually going to get to a point where it will be assumed you have it - without testing (i.e., flu swab came back negative, have flu symptoms - it may still be flu or it may be corona virus).

Until there is a quick test for corona virus, you're probably only going to get tested if you get hospitalized (or you are in a current 'hot spot', but those places will quickly be overwhelmed and testing will likely drop back to the most dire cases only there too).

To be honest with you, there is a part of me that wishes that I had COVID-19. At least it would be over and done with. Now I can look forward to getting it after I recover from the flu (or even while I still have the flu).

What you said in your second paragraph is basically what the doctor told me. If my flu test had come back negative, I would have had to move forward under the assumption that I had COVID-19. Self-isolation, rest, drink plenty of fluids, etc., just as you said in one of your previous posts.

I do live in the United States, and I did ask for a coronavirus test. In fact, I was very clear about wanting one.

From what I understand, the clinic called their hospital (they are both part of one system), and the hospital called the state health department for their approval to have the test run at the state lab. The state health department denied their request. Please note that this was not an insurance denial. It did not even get to that point.

Testing is not widespread enough, and since younger people without impeded lung function generally don't die of it, there are probably thousands more who had it, have recovered, and were never diagnosed with it.

It's a significant mortality rate, but this is not civilization ending or anything. We need to do what is still possible to stop the spread and keep the at-risk from getting it, as the mortality rate for older folks with prior illness or compromised immune systems/lung function is probably 5-10x that figure, at least, but if everyone in the world got it, society shouldn't just collapse.
