Italy has extended its emergency coronavirus measures, which include travel restrictions and a ban on public gatherings, to the entire country.

On Monday, Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte ordered people to stay home and seek permission for essential travel.

He said the measures were designed to protect the most vulnerable. "There is no more time," he said in a TV address.
The entire country is told to stay at home...

Mr Conte described the measures as "I stay home" - with people forbidden to gather in public. "No more nightlife; we can't allow this anymore since they are occasions for contagion," he said.

All sporting events - including football matches - are suspended nationwide. Schools and universities will remain closed until 3 April.

Best decision but still not enough. Every country in Europe with more than 50 infections should do the same.

I would think through all this, small businesses are going to get hit really hard, hopefully governments will help them out

Its either an overreaction or not. Having the SARS virus pop out in all 22 provinces after they locked down 3 just a week ago might be showing us that quarantine wont work with this bug. Or that what we consider quarantine will have to become much more intrusive than what we expected to get this thing snuffed out.

CDC data now confirms that to date there have only been ~4000 persons tested in the entire United States total. By comparison, South Korea - a much smaller country - had tested over 65,000 people in the first week after their first case was detected.

Note that totals must be divided by 2 since a diagnosis requires 2 tests for each person (each for a different viral DNA segment).

"Have you traveled outside the US in the last 2 weeks or been with some that has? Then we may or may not test you." You can have all the symptoms and they still may not test you unless you answer one of those two questions with a yes. Unless the US gets better standards for testing we are letting many people that possible have the virus slip through undetected. This is why South Korea is testing so effectively and we are not.
“Are you at all concerned, as Trump said, that we cannot let the cure be worse than the problem itself?” Haines asked.

Biden noted in his reply that the COVID-19 cure “will make the problem worse, no matter what.”

Was at a rehearsal with a geriatric doctor in the orchestra yesterday and he got up and spoke on the subject at the break. He said that just recently (last few days) private labs in the US have been able to start testing for it, so his practice's policy is that if you have two of the three major symptoms - fever, shortness of breath, coughing - and one of them is fever, they will test you, by default. He also deals with the most at-risk age group, and this is in Montgomery County, MD where there are confirmed cases, but while the number of cases in the US is still on the rise, it does seem that some degree of testing is actually becoming available.

My doctor will test according to symptoms as well, when he has the means to do so. Which means if he has kits in two weeks when I finally get in there, I'll be getting tested.

Great update this morning by Dr. Campbell. Apparently there was a study done in China following the movement of an infected patient and how they have infected others on a bus.

By tracing it back and utilizing the onboard camera, they were able to determine that the sick person infected the other 4.5 meters away. Which means the aerosol transmission of the virus is twice long as once thought.

Also, the third person to be infected on that bus, entered the bus 30 minutes after the initial sick person left. Which means the virus hung in the air for 30 minutes. The transmission wasn't from droplets because they sat nowhere near the other two people.

They also tested the viability of the virus at 98' F and it survived for three days. So warmer weather isn't going to be much help here.

Two Stanford doctors got infected while dealing with an infected patient, even though they were wearing head to toe protective gear and following Ebola protocols

                          Sucker is very contagious

The whole warmer weather thing isn't about the virus survivability but people's boosted immune systems.

I would think low winter humidity also has something to do with it, as airborne droplets can stay suspended longer and travel much farther in low humidity conditions

They were talking about that in the HSA webinar. We have 2 new confirmed cases in the county next to mine. They are under at home quarantine and the local CDC is trying to track down everyone they had contact with to test them. This will stretch things for us here in WI as we jut got out test kits last week. Glad we have help from the Fed CDC as well.

Got family in that county so I am hoping they do not show up on that list. Everyone is guessing it is in the UW system, which is where my family is, they are students.

My work place is looking to start up the work at home BCP protocol by next Tuesday to have it ready to go. Also managers have been told to tell their people if you have a temperature or cough stay home, no exceptions. HR is going to adjust the sick time codes to reflect the new rules. As the IT guy I get to interact with everyone to give them the equipment so they can then work from home.

I am not happy about that as I already have a compromised immune system from past illnesses as well as my bad asthma and just recovering from pneumonia. If I get this for sure or again I am prob not long for this world. lol

But then I guess I get to see what is next before the rest of ya Ragers!

I don't know what the exact cost is. A MarketWatch article from three days ago said that people were being billed between $1,000 and $4,000 total. The CDC was supposed to cover the cost of the test (not the visit, though), but it looks as though at the time of writing, at least a couple of people were slipping through the cracks.

I would get tested if you start to feel sick. You are sixty years old, so I would not take any chances.

A MarketWatch article from three days ago said that people were being billed between $1,000 and $4,000 total. The CDC was supposed to cover the cost of the test (not the visit, though), but it looks as though at the time of writing, at least a couple of people were slipping through the cracks.

Wash your hands regularly when you can, use hand sanitizer when you can't, and don't touch your face. You probably know all of this already, but I wanted to say it anyway.
