We stocked up another week's worth, and it probably had nothing to do with anything other than a lack of reliable help, but large sections of shelves were bare. We don't see that very often. We'll make a couple more trips and will have enough for us and the kids families to last a couple of months if needed.

So I come back from a beautiful week in the Bahamas to find my town of normally-rational people has gone batshit crazy and bought up all the TP and hand sanitizer in every single store, including Costco and Wal-Mart.

I just can't even...

On the upside, my wife made reusable, washable cloth wipes years ago during a fit of eco-friendliness. Now I'm glad she did.

The nonsense I’m reading and seeing from the news media and people buying everything up for something that has a 3 percent chance of killing you is ridiculous. Your probably more likely to die in your car today.

The mortality rate varies pretty significantly by age and health. Of course most healthy adults would recover from the virus just fine, but if you are elderly or have existing health issues your chance of survival goes down. Also, people are taking precautions so as to NOT SPREAD it to these more susceptible people. For some reason some people lack the empathy for this to ever enter their minds.

A guy at work here just went to a funeral over the weekend for a friend that was in her 80's who contracted the virus.

Mortality rate for the elderly is pretty reliable at this point around 15%. If its too contagious and we dont get a chance to vaccinate them before it spreads globally itll be a hecatomb.

The death rate for normal adults isnt so sure...

My work place is having a meeting tomorrow about what our reaction might be. We will have it in a small room with lots of sick coughing and sneezing people. I am looking forward to it. I think I will bring my mask and freak people out.

There's a cold or two going around as well. I was working-from-home all last week because of a cold. I didn't want to go into the office with a box of Kleenex and be "that guy" last week. But whats this about drawing your own blood? Is that a part of the COVID-19 testing? I thought it was just a throat and nasal swab?

Though given that I live a few miles outside of NYC, I feel like I'm in the direct path of Hurricane COVID.

If the imune system freaks out enough it can aparently lead to scarring in your lungs. But drowning in your own blood might be a bit of a stretch

But the people that are doing it I'm sure are not in their 80's. And I doubt they are doing it for anyone else's behalf but their's.

I'm sure there's a percentage of people who are overreacting.

But still, I think its not a bad idea to stock up on some extra key items (food, household supplies, and necessary medicines) in the event things get even worse and everyone is confined to their homes for an extended period. I think this is what a lot of people are thinking.

Oh. "Drowning" not "drawing" your own blood. I read that as drawing your own blood. As though you needed to self administer a blood draw as a part of getting tested. That sounded... weird.

Testing is still in very short supply. So unless anyone on Rage qualifies as having the most direct and dire of symptoms, I'm guessing not. There's just not that many of us.

This. At some point they will give up on testing due to the limited ability to test. It will simply be empirically assumed that, given symptoms, someone likely has the virus once it's endemic (which I'd put money on being in about two weeks in the US).

I think they'll still do testing based on symptoms, and once confirmed, they'll choose an appropriate treatment regime. Because the treatment seems specific and expensive to this virus. And it seems like the tipping point, when your body reaches it, comes pretty quickly.

Exactly. They'll test you if you're in dire straights, but they're not going to test everybody. If you have it and even if you have moderate symptoms, but not dire, they'll probably tell you to self-quarantine, rest, eat chicken soup and drink sprite and go the f home... directly home... do not pass Go... do not collect $200 - all without testing you

Unless they miraculously come up with a rapid swab (we'd be *lucky* to see that in a year), there's just no way everyone with symptoms could possibly be tested once this thing spreads further.

Is there any difference in WBC / other indicators between COVID-19 and the common cold/flu? Just spitballing because I know those WBC tests can be done fairly quickly - just as a "nah, you just have the flu" vs "you may have something worse, lets test you further" kind of thing.

I would highly doubt that the profile of your blood chemistry and counts could be used to indicate the specific virus affecting you.

Now, could you use such data to differentiate your immune response to an allergic reaction compared to a viral infection? That's more probable, but even trying to use such data to differentiate between bacterial and viral infections would not be full-proof.

Hell, that's why they can't just look in the back of your throat to say if you have strep or not. You need the quick swab because even if you have the tell-tale white spots, it may not be strep. There is a good bit of variation in immune response genetically (hence the prevalence of certain immune/auto-immune conditions that tend to trend in families).

I think the real solution here is going to have to be some novel thinking and dedicated science. I've seen several articles talking about the damage COVID-19 does isn't actually COVID-19 doing it. It's your own immune system's massive response that is damaging lung tissue and causing ARDS (acute respiratory distress syndrome). And that's not surprising as the immune response can often be worse than the infectious agent afflicting the person (i.e., read up on cytokine storm). However, I don't know what self-respecting doctor is going to try an immunosuppressant on a person with COVID-19, but it may actually work (at least if you target tempering the immune system vs. actually trying to suppress it).

But our drugs in this area are very blunt tools. They are not surgically precise and we don't have a great understanding of immunity.

However, on the other hand, there are anecdotal reports for the MERS outbreak that steriods (e.g., prednisone and the like) that are usually used to treat respiratory symptoms by blocking inflammatory mediators may actually slow the clearance of the virus from the respiratory track.

So, basically, COVID-19 is a wake up call. It's not airborne HIV, it's not super virulent ebola, and it's not going to cause the end of civilization (although get ready to use your left hand to wipe your ass because there ain't no toilet paper left and the USA doesn't know what it's missing with bidets), but it does show that we are not good at containing viruses (and we probably never will be given their nature) and it does show that we are woefully under-prepared to deal with the next evolving microbial crisis and that we need to take the possibility of other diseases spreading like a plague across our extremely interconnected world as something that is very serious and inevitable.
