It seems that over 146 million now have some degree of natural immunity to the disease. And based on the total number of infections vs. the total deaths the odds of surviving the infection is 99.4% when taken across all age groups. No doubt if you're older those odds are worse.
Going in for my 2nd dose of the drug after the holiday.
Well despite the recent surge in cases here in MA I was hoping we would sail through this holiday weekend without anything to deter our family gathering plans. We were planning to pick up our tradition of going to my wife's cousin's for Christmas eve after missing it last year due to covid. Well now we just found out her grandson (9 year old) just tested positive so its been canceled.
It sucks but we will all figure out somewhere else to celebrate (most likely staying home). What's more concerning is we are not sure of that part of the family's vaccination status. Some of them are but we suspect some are not. Including the kid's father. Hopefully they all make it through without anyone getting severely sick.
Texas getting f'd with omicron already. Didn't even wait till after Christmas, nice work... Barely got through the 3rd wave now we're starting a 4th. When does people finally realize not getting the vax is going to push this crap out forever?

We’re just meeting with immediate family (all vaccinated) for a couple of hours and then back home this year. That experience with the ER last weekend and talking with the Doctors and nurses convinced us it’s really the best course of action right now.
Alyssa Dipirro, 30, was waiting in line for a Covid test in Orlando, Fla., on Tuesday but had not been vaccinated. Earlier in the pandemic, she did not want to do so while pregnant, despite assurances from public health experts that the shots were safe for pregnant women.
Since then, she has not been reassured by reports of vaccinated people getting Covid infections, as is happening more frequently with Omicron, even though the vaccines remain effective at warding off severe disease. “They still have to get tested if they get exposed,” she said. “So what’s the point of this?”
Yes, because the vaccine doesn't make you 100% immune, there's no point. arggg

I missed the story about why you were at the ER but I hope you and/or everyone else is doing OK.

An at-home treatment for COVID-19 that can prevent serious illness was authorized by the Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday, offering a note of optimism for the future of the pandemic as the world faces the omicron variant.
When taken early, Pfizer's pill was 89% effective at reducing the risk of severe illness and death from COVID-19, according to the company, and was effective against omicron.

The vaccine doesn't stop OMI. Even with the booster you're like 40% up to 80% (so they claim).
All of the first US cases were in vaccinated folks. One even had the booster. You're going to get this.

COVID-19 is known to cause multi-organ dysfunction1-3 in acute infection, with prolonged symptoms experienced by some patients, termed Post-Acute Sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 (PASC)4-5. However, the burden of infection outside the respiratory tract and time to viral clearance is not well characterized, particularly in the brain3,6-14. We performed complete autopsies on 44 patients with COVID-19 to map and quantify SARS-CoV-2 distribution, replication, and cell-type specificity across the human body, including brain, from acute infection through over seven months following symptom onset. We show that SARS-CoV-2 is widely distributed, even among patients who died with asymptomatic to mild COVID-19, and that virus replication is present in multiple extrapulmonary tissues early in infection. Further, we detected SARS-CoV-2 RNA in multiple anatomic sites, including regions throughout the brain, for up to 230 days following symptom onset. Despite extensive distribution of SARS-CoV-2 in the body, we observed a paucity of inflammation or direct viral cytopathology outside of the lungs. Our data prove that SARS-CoV-2 causes systemic infection and can persist in the body for months.

I’d support them even if the food/service was garbage. Anyone not following proper precautions these days can eff themselves. I’m tired of snowflakes complaining. Don’t like it don’t go outside. Don’t like that option move to an island or deep in a forest. Part of the pact of being part of society is looking out for the general welfare of others.
TLDR: boo frickety hoo to people who won’t grow a pair and mask up.

Just received a letter from my kids' school. My son was in direct contact with someone who has it.
My father wasn't keen on receiving us (he had a couple of cancers) and my gf's parents aren't at their peak so we're gonna spend Christmas between us and we'll just swap gifts in their parking lot.

Wearing a mask isn’t about you, and being vaccinated doesn’t stop you from transmitting it. Neither does ‘not living in fear’. Fear is for immunocompromised people like my mother who just spent 2.5 days in an ER because the ICU was loaded with covid patients who weren’t afraid either.
If she contracts covid, any variant, even fully vaccinated she’s probably dead, because the cancer already tore her lungs and innards a new one. It would probably be someone nearby who couldn’t bother wearing a mask, maybe because they refuse to live in fear ya know?
Good for you guys

Because it may eventually sink in, even if too late.
There very clearly are a group of people in this country with a certain affiliation and belief system that makes the proceed through life without giving a **** about something until it personally affects them. These people may not have always been this way, but as they get older, are a majority in the country they live in, and generally have a privilege in that country that not all folks int that country can enjoy - change becomes scary, they believe themselves to be the victims (often putting the targets on their own backs), and they find a media bubble that reinforces this stance that entrenches them and their self-serving asshole point of view (yet, when called out on this, the butt hurt goes into overdrive - as, you know, they're the victims, they're the persecuted, yadda, yadda, yadda). And the only way to address this problem is to point it out, so that's what we have to do.
I don't care about your personal experience. Live in fear? How about wear a mask because it's the GOD DAMNED decent thing to do.
Face Kotex? Give me a ****ing break.

Your immunity is probably good. But, any idea how many people you infected when you were running back and forth to the shitter? Next time you’ll probably by asymptomatic which is even worse. Bill the Super Spreader ….
You aren’t alone. Most people, between vaccination and prior infection, do have much better immunity than last year. But, nonchalant attitudes like yours is going to make the spread worse. A lower percentage of people will die. But with the spread growing wider and wider. That’s still a LOT of dead people. I am boosted and feel good and don’t fear either. But, I don’t intend on being a spreader. So, I wear a mask.
Aaaand my Family Christmas is cancelled for me. One of the couples in our building tested positive and they have been walking everywhere in the building maskless, sharing teh elevator etc etc. So since I'm completely unwilling to even potentially expose either my 90 some year old grandmother or other family, vaccinated or not, me and my SO are out
Luckily my work is remotable AND my work wouldn't even be back till the 4th.
At least they notified everyone, but damn it

Hopefully you didn’t spread before you noticed. The other big issue right now is the monocionals you got are in short supply and being rationed now. You probably couldn’t get them today. Plus, the new anti-viral pills aren’t yet available in mass quantities. So timing is not good on this spike. Being careful is a good idea because everyone doing their part would make a difference. (I know I am dreaming, but ya gotta hope).
