Has Fauci lost weight? He looks thinner and younger than I remember....
My world is a world of concepts and principles, not a battlefield - "war" is simply the wrong metaphor for where I'm coming from.

I agree with thinner, but not with younger.

If I were him, I'd be funneling some of that funding into secret de-aging research. If at some point you start noticing him looking like he's in better shape, you'll know where your tax dollars have been going.

This is where you don't understand. He is actually 330 years old.

Not going to lie, anti-vaxxers are getting a little bit into my head and I'm watching my son like a hawk.
I contacted his school teacher to also keep an eye on him and send him to the nurse at any sign of discomfort.
I also scheduled him for a doctor's check up this Wednesday to make sure everything is ok.

I got both my kids vaccinated last Friday. Found the first center with shots available.

              No side effects all weekend.

There are two big lessons that I take coming out of this pandemic:

#1: We are all in this **** together. Whenever I go into a restaurant or fast food place where a bunch of workers are running around sweating in masks for most likely minimum wage. I tip 20-30% regardless of service. It's a small way to pay it forward.

#2: The pandemic gave people an opportunity to raise their voice and loudly proclaim: "I don't give a **** about anyone but myself." I was surprised how many people are like this. But, I am glad they came forward as it made it easier to exorcise them from my life.

we've all heard of people who've caught covid and got really sick, then begging to get vaccinated, but well, that's not how it works.

Still it's tough to lose someone, even more so if it would've been avoidable.

Sorry to hear about your loss, Kyt.

they got two pill treatments now and being used in other countries

The U.S. government will buy another $1 billion worth of the COVID-19 pill made by Merck & Co Inc and partner Ridgeback Biotherapeutics, the companies said on Tuesday.

Pfizer Inc's experimental antiviral pill to treat COVID-19 cut by 89% the chance of hospitalization or death for adults at risk of severe disease, the company said on Friday, as its CEO vowed to make this promising new weapon in the fight against the pandemic available globally as quickly as possible.

I think it might be they want multiple suppliers in case one of them has production problems like the JNJ vax had early on.

The new treatment pills are a double edged sword. Those that are already vaccine hesitant will take this news and harden their views. This will cause the spread of the virus to continue killing vulnerable people still. The pill is not a 100% cure. A lower percentage will die. But if the virus continues to spread, people will die. The only way to end the deaths is to end the virus.

I don't know much about the treatment pill, but if there's an alternative to the vaccine, that is a good thing - it'll give people who do not want the vaccine a way around it.

The vaccine has not halted the spread of the virus, and there are plenty of vulnerable people incapable of getting it. Treatment pills that can help people survive the virus are a much needed solution.

you can still get it and can then spread just as much as the unvaxxed and maybe more so as if you are vaccinated you are more likely to be asymptomatic and still spread it

you can still get it and can then spread just as much as the unvaxxed and maybe more so as if you are vaccinated you are more likely to be asymptomatic and still spread it

the only thing the vaccine does is stop you from getting very sick with it 90% of the time

You would assume that and you would be wrong; when it comes to COVID, too many "knowns" have changed in the past two years to consider anything static.

If I understand correctly, vaccinated folks who get infected transmit far lower volumes of the vaccine, making them less likely to infect others, and even if they do infect someone, that person will likely have a more mild infection, due to the smaller volume of viruses.

Alot of people don't know that the amount of virus you get infected by makes a GIGANTIC difference in how sick you get. It's not hard to understand. Think about how the virus reproduces inside your body, and factor whatever the doubling rate is. Now consider whatever viral-load the infection has to achieve to cause you symptoms, hospitalization, or death. The higher volume of virus you initially get hit with, the less time it will take for the virus to reproduce to the level where it can harm you... the lower the initial hit, the longer time your body has to R&D antibodies to kill the virus.

So lets say you get infected from someone wearing a mask. Many of the viruses are caught by the mask, and the viruses that get through the mask are dispersed through the air, moving slowly, in all different directions.

Now lets say you're infected from someone sneezing a giant wad of snot directly into your mouth. You're likely looking at a billion times higher initial viral it than if you had been infected by the guy wearing the mask. Your body has WAAAAY less time to develop antibodies now, and you're about to die.

The vaccine works by reducing the time that your body needs to ramp-up production of antibodies, thus giving you a massive advantage in being able to defeat the infection before it grows to a level that can kill you. Your lower overall max viral load will also mean you're transmitting lower viral loads to others around you.

Nonetheless, fully vaccinated individuals with breakthrough infections have peak viral load similar to unvaccinated cases and can efficiently transmit infection in household settings, including to fully vaccinated contacts. Host–virus interactions early in infection may shape the entire viral trajectory."

If you are constantly being exposed to infected people you are going to get it eventually. With Delta it’s a 100% chance you will be infected if you are unvaccinated. And, infection will occur even with a small exposure. But, if you get exposed enough there is still a very good chance to get infected even if you are vaccinated. So, the less you get exposed to the virus the better. A bunch of unvaccinated people only make the spread easier. If contact with the virus is rare, your vaccine will be effective. If you are around a bunch of infected people, it won’t be. It’s why case rates in unvaccinated areas are so high.

                                                                        Comment

Cold weather is really helping delta find the un-vaxxed. But no surprise CO is getting more coverage as the single digit mortality numbers (for now) of VT just doesn't grab headlines as much. Article also mentions increasing break through infections which is why CO and some other states are allowing boosters for all despite CDC recommendations.

Hopefully the AL spike is temporary, you wouldn't think there would be much tinder there but if it blows up that would really really suck.

The red line shows daily cases and the yellow line shows 7 day deaths per 100K. At the very beginning of the pandemic, deaths dramatically outpaced cases in this view. The data in May 2020 is the result we would have had if we did nothing. The country locked down and the surge in Jun/July 2020 and the death rate didn't climb as bad proportionally to the cases. The delta exploded the cases in Dec 2020 but deaths, as compared to cases, improved again. The latest surge of unvaccinated shows even more improvement as proportional deaths dropped even more.
